In order to assist people to get fit, lose weight and save ££ in the new year Parkrun should be top of everyones list.
If Everyone who does a Parkrun can list their local run here, whats good about it and what their PB is then maybe we can encourage more Mners to get those running shoes dusted off and join the Parkrun revolution.

I do the Hull one which is supposedly one of the best as it is totally flat, around a beautiful lake and you get to run past Wallabies, Deer and Alpacas. Pb is 21.34.
Come on lets spread the word.

Thanks to Kristina2 for mentioning the new St Andrews parkrun - I looked ages ago for one near me but the nearest was over an hour away. This one is about 10 minutes away. I've just registered!

I've been off injured for a few weeks but should be fit to join in in a month or so, hopefully. Can't wait!

Kristina2 · 09/05/2012 17:52

Well done apple and best wishes for a speedy recovery!

As long as you are well enough to walk , you could always be a volunteer for the next few weeks. There are lots of Jobs that just involve standing , like giving out or swiping the tags at the end. Its good fun, everyone is usuallu very friendly and you will know what its all about by the time you are fit enough to run

Just a thoughtSmile

applejelly · 10/05/2012 19:33

That is a very good idea Kristina! Thanks Smile

balotelli · 12/05/2012 06:45

Volunteering is a great idea and great fun.

Off to to my 34th Parkrun today, perfect weather. Great day for a run around a lake.

Kristina2 · 13/05/2012 18:19

New parkrun starting soon in Irvine in Ayrshire

funchum8am · 13/05/2012 18:30

Would love to do it but none nearby (Pinner) - how can I nominate my area for a new one? (I would be happy to help!)

BellaBearisWideAwake · 13/05/2012 18:37

I've just finished week five of c25k and I'm goingto do the st albans one when I graduate. A colleague really recommends it. And now I've written it down I have to do it!

FartBlossom · 13/05/2012 18:57

funchum I was looking into this too as there are none near enough for me, but you have to set it up yourself. I saw somewhere that it costs £6000 to set a new one up, but Im not sure if you have to fund that yourself. It is something I am considering, but Im not 100% certain I will be able to keep the commitment of running it as I dont know if once you've set one up if its always yours to keep going at. Im just a bit worried that the appeal it has now to set it up will stay with me long enough. If you have a look at the parkrun website it does tell you a bit about starting one up.

Kristina2 · 14/05/2012 09:20

Bella, thats what i did! I started the c25k in september, which in fact took me about 12 weeks as i did it so slowlyBlush

Then i started doing the local parkrun in january ( new Year resolution etc) and i did my first 10k yesterday! And i almost enjoyed it Grin

funchum8am · 14/05/2012 19:00

I'd love to start one up but am 21 weeks pregnant so it will have to wait! Maybe once I'm back at work...since they're child friendly (and DH will be full time SAHD)...

balotelli · 17/05/2012 20:45

Funchum why does being pregnant stop you? At our local park run a girl carried on running all the way through her P she ran on the saturday, gave birth on the monday and was back running 12 days later pushing dc round in a buggy!

Kristina2 · 17/05/2012 20:51

I hate women like that Wink

BellaBearisWideAwake · 20/05/2012 21:13

So how fast do you need to run? I ran the third run of the c25k week 6 yesterday and based on that I would be hard pushed to complete a 5K in 40 minutes.

Kristina2 · 21/05/2012 11:57

Bella, at my local park run this on saturday there were 4 runners who took 40 mins and one who took 48mins. So of you wemt next week you would be with the group at the end but you wouldnt be last!!! So if you fancy going along for the fun and encouragement, just sign up online and turn up this saturday. Its free!!

The results are all on line -there is a link to " latest results". Andyou can see that although there will be teenaged boys running in 16 mins , they are in the minority and there are lots of beginners too.

BUT in 3weeks when you are running for most or all of your 5 km you will be LOADS faster!!! And because you are a beginner you will get to achieve lots of personal bests! ( you get a little PB in the column next to your name) Grin. Its very exciting

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/05/2012 18:45

Thank you!

wohmum · 22/05/2012 23:08

Funchum8am the nearest to Pinner is Black Park, nr Slough.

I'm in Ruislip, and gearing up to do it when I'm a bit faster!

balotelli · 27/05/2012 06:19

did anyone do Parkrun yesterday? What a beautiful day for it!
I managed a PB 21.02, getting closer to the 20 minute mark! I was helped by a 'pacemaker' and he has agreed to let me stalk follow him in the HUll 10k next week.

Kristina2 · 27/05/2012 08:32

Good luck with the 10k. I did my first a few weeks ago and they had official pacemakers at 45,50, 55mins etc.i stuck right behind one of them, which made such a difference and helped me achieve my target. As i beginner i find its very difficult to pace myself correctly

And well done on yesterdays pb. I did our loacl parkrun, which is mostly in shade, thank goodness , as its nearly all hills!!!

balotelli · 27/05/2012 13:17

Thanks K2. I'm very lucky as my local Parkrun is completely flat and 2 laps around a beautiful lake full of baby ducks and geese. The man i followed isnt a proper pacemaker but I have spoken to him a few times after the run and he always finishes ahead of me so if I track him as closely as poss I run faster. It also helps that I have lost several lbs recently. He is happy for me to stalk him next week so hopfully I can crack 46mins. Its not my 1st 10k (5th) so I know whats to come but the forecast for next week is not good... V hot and the run is around Hull city centre so lovely and flat but through built up area with one section around the Marina (yes Hull does have a marina, 2 rubbers dinghies, a canoe and a deflated lilo, but its a marina!!!) so that bit should be fairly cool.

balotelli · 04/06/2012 06:37

Well it turns out that the weather forecast wasnt quite right with regards to the temperature!!
It was extremely wet and bloody freezing cold for a june day but.............. I did it in 44.54 and finished 232 out of 2447.
Rather pleased with that.
Have now thawed out with the help of a hot bath and a hot wife who also did a pb finishing in 58.47.
Next year planning on 10 10k's in one year!!

SmileItsSunny · 04/06/2012 06:58

Oh, I did one in Basingstoke once... I would like to try again though. There is a new one in Newbury so maybe I'll try that one.

annieshaf · 23/06/2012 16:16

Hi
Just did my first parkrun in preston today and was very pleased as came in with a time of 26:53. I was 33/61 over all but was 7/26 out of the women. Have only been running since Xmas so was very pleased with that as the route has a steep hill and it's 3 laps!! It was also quite a windy day and the wind was against me up the hill. Am aiming to do it maybe once a month and see if I can improve on that.
Anyone else running today?

ameliameerkat · 01/07/2012 22:03

I did my first Parkrun yesterday in Edinburgh. The course is lovely, along the waterfront at Cramond, nice and flat too. Did it in about 31 and a half mins, which I was quite pleased with (I've only been running about 2 months!). Going to try and make it along at least twice a month and see how my time improves.

milkysmum · 13/06/2014 22:49

Just completed a 10 week beginners running course and 'graduated' with the Parkrun at Bolton. Time was 34 mins. Plan to do again as the atmosphere was great!
