Just did my first run of the year (and for as long as I can remember!)
Only ten minutes but it's a start Smile

PicotFanStitch · 02/01/2012 14:41

I'm just finishing couch to 5k (now just running for 20 - 25 - 30 mins to my own music as I've gone off Laura and the NHS's three tracks). Finding it really addictive, and already thinking maybe I'll keep going past 5k to 10, but a bit worried about how it will work when the holidays end. I work ft and have 2 dc, one with sn, so while it's been possible if not easy to find an hour a day for running for the last 3 weeks, I'm a bit worried about keeping it up through the spring, at least while the early mornings and evenings are so dark.

idealism · 02/01/2012 15:58

good to hea some of you are joining me! I did a short run today; that wind was a bit too nippy for my liking, but will continue on weds...

I have never ran before and tbh thought that anyone running must be slightly mad. I changed my mind about 3 weeks ago and decided that I wanted to give it a go. I chose today to start and wen ton my first ever run. I did a mix of running and walking and think I did about 3/4 mile. I really loved it even though I thought I was never going to breathe normally again. Feel like it cleared my head and it was good to do something just for me for a change. Hope I keep it up

Mominatrix · 04/01/2012 08:36

Can I join you? I've signed up for a half marathon in May to give myself a reasonable target. I'm ok running on a treadmill, but am petrified of running outdoors due to 4 previous ankle injuries in the past which took anywhere from 4-6 months each to fully heal, and also the cold/wind.

My goal is to do 3 runs a week on a treadmill and do one road run on the weekend. Not really worried about terrain as the half marathon is a pretty flat route.

I have ordered some warm running clothes (gloves, windproof jacket, long sleeve shirt) and am petrified of my first outside run. THey haven't come yet, so furthers my excuses not to run outside. I have done 2 treadmill runs this week - a five miler, and a 4 mile interval run. I am taking today as a rest day, and plan on doing another treadmill run tomorrow.

Good luck for your run today idealism - hope you stay warm!
Well done pud1! Each run will be slightly easier - just keep going!
Time is definitely difficult to find picot, and kudos for making it this far. Can you run during lunch hours or to work?

Have a good day!

StickyGhostofXmasPast · 04/01/2012 13:25

Ohh, can I join as well please? I'm feeling more motivated just reading your posts already. I've promised myself to restart running this week (the week is moving on a bit fast and haven't done it, time, and procrastinating, are an issue) after having my DS in October. I hope everyone is enjoying their running, bloody cold though!
Mominatrix can I ask which half marathon you're doing?

xmyboys · 04/01/2012 14:07

Guilty only one run this week! Will get on the treadmill tonight! (I promiseGrin)

Mominatrix · 04/01/2012 16:03

Hello Sticky. I am running the Ranglaeh (?spell) Harriers Richmond half marathon. Can't believe you are jumping back into running after having a baby just a couple months ago!

PicotFanStitch · 05/01/2012 11:07

I feel the need to tell someone that for the first time I ran for 30mins this morning, and actually it was fine. Nobody in rl is going to be interested but I'm rather pleased with myself, and if I keep it up for a week am going to buy some proper running clothes.

pud1 · 05/01/2012 13:17

I am totally pissed off with this weather. Did my first every run on tuesday and could not go out yesterday due to weather and today is not looking good either. Have to wait for dh to get home and looks like the weather is going to be bad again later. Feel like I am loosing momentum already.

OTheHugeManatee · 05/01/2012 14:08

Can I join? I did the C25K last year and have been addicted ever since! I'm now up to 4-mile long runs at the weekends plus 2-3 runs during the week. I've dropped a dress size and have been feeling fantastic. I've got a busy year (moving house and getting married) so don't want to set any really mad goals but would like to run a 10K once the weather improves a bit.

Recently though I have been getting a bit of lower calf muscle pain - it started with some hill intervals I did a couple of weeks ago, but this last week has started to feel as though it could turn into shin splints. So I'm going to have to rest it for a few days, to see if it improves. Which means my first post on the running thread is a 'waaaaah I can't go running this week!' post, which is a bit rubbish.

Picot I know exactly what you mean! The first time I did 30 minutes (not that long ago) I was like this:

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

...all day Grin

PicotFanStitch · 05/01/2012 16:29

Thank you, OTHM. I knew someone on here would get it! Dh said 'that's nice dear' and my colleague said 'do you think you'll keep it up now the holidays are over?' (Not sure I will, actually, but am increasingly determined. What really puts me off is the idea of running in dog poo in the dark and there's an awful lot of it round here.)

idealism · 07/01/2012 16:43

managed to stick to my week 1 target, but now have yucky sickness bug, so will have to recover...:(

hello - hope you don't mind me coming over. Just wondered had you seen this thread? Lots of runners and some great advice etc if you ever wanted to pop over. Crazy people but very welcoming!

Great to see lots more runners!

Mominatrix · 09/01/2012 19:40

Congratulations Picot! You should be proud of yourself - just keep going and soon we'll be congratulating your on your first hour run.

I did my first outside run on Saturday and was miserable for the first half - was running facing the wind and I thought my ears were going to fall off! They were so cold that I was getting a headache. I thought that buying a windbreaker with a hood would be all that I needed, but I did not think that the whipping winds would be so strong that they would blow the hood down, thus rendering it useless! The run back was much more pleasant as I was against the wind. Two interesting observations: 1) it is harder to run on road vs treadmill and 2) my pace was naturally faster on the road than on a treadmill (probably because I wanted the damn run to be over!). All in all, I ran 5.2 miles in 50 minutes and am really pleased. However, not looking forward to next Saturday!

Hi sticky. I'll check out the link - could use all the advice and support I can get!

Quodlibet · 11/01/2012 12:23

Can I join in?
Just started C25k and aiming for 5k by end of Jan/early Feb at which point I'll start aiming at a 10km. I'm looking forward to being where you lot all are! I'm reasonably fit but have always been useless at running (no stamina) hence building up slowly. Saying that, I'm finding C25k reasonably easy and wondering if I can accelerate the workouts, eg only doing 2 repeats of each week instead of 3? So far I'm up to Wk 3 r1 but was able to keep going at the end and jogged the last walk and cool down. Any advice?

Mominatrix I get the ear problem and my DP's dorky sweatband was the answer. An athlete friend of mine once explained to me that you burn fewer cals on the treadmill because it's easier as the 'road' is moving under you so you do less work IYSWIM?

QuietOhSoQuiet · 13/01/2012 10:46

can I join too, have to get back to running as soon as

was supposed to start back this week but have had the most stinking head cold so have just been shredding at home and hopefully cold will disappear after the weekend so can get back out there

OctonautsOnRepeat · 16/01/2012 20:45

Can I join too?

I used to run and got up to 5km in 24mins, then got nearly run over by an idiot and fractured my ankle, had a couple of months off, thyroid packed up, PCOS went nuts and two years and 3 stone later Sad I have decided to get back into it.

Was in the hospital last week for an ECG with suspected angina--I am 28 FGS.

Did my first run today, W1R1. Feel fantastic. Grin

loubielou31 · 16/01/2012 21:42

I did my first run EVER yesterday. Grin Inspired by the couch25k threads I downloaded the podcast and set off yesterday afternoon. I'm seriously proud of myself although it only counts if I do another run tomorrow. I will doubtless have loads of questions to ask of all you guys.

loubielou31 · 16/01/2012 21:45

Octonauts, we could check in and spur each other on, I need external motivation.

Hope you ecg results come back clear.

OctonautsOnRepeat · 18/01/2012 22:51

Thanks Loubie, How did it go yesterday?

I just got back from my parents- about 2 hours away so think I will be going for a run tomorrow rather than tonight!

loubielou31 · 18/01/2012 23:33

Ooh I was really proud of myself. I had to run when DH got back from work (because DD was home from school) and I didn't fancy running round on my own in the dark so I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill. It took me ages to work out how to switch the damn thing on and then I was slightly concerned that i would lose concentration and fall of the back of it. I haven't set foot in a gym for YEARS! I actually really enjoyed it (although prefer outdoors I think)

I might have to do the same tomorrow evening before I go out.
Also have to make DD2s birthday cake for Friday, She'll be two and got so much for Christmas I can't think of anything she needs or wants. I think I might just get her a helium balloon and buy something summery when the weather improves.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/01/2012 10:06

Hello, can I join you, too, please? I've signed up for a 10K in May, which seems very daunting at the moment. I've done a few 5Ks (sometmies comfortably, sometimes a bit hideous!), so I've got a training plan, which involves 2 shortish runs durning the week, then a longer one at the weekend, starting with 5K, then building up week by week to 10K. I'd like to be able to run the 10K before the actualy race IYSWIM, just so I know I can do it. My biggest problem is wiht my breathing - sometimes feel like I just can't get enough air in Sad - don't know if that will get better as I progress?

mad4 · 22/01/2012 14:34

oooh can i join in too?

i have been a regular runner in the past, i used running to combat my PND which worked so well that i carried on and completed FLM in 2009 (slowly but i made it) and have since run on and off.

To keep me motivated this year i want to try to run 2012km, that means doing at least 5k every day and so far im with it. but i am getting little niggles from upping my milage and a nice thread to compare notes with other runners (who are not all super fit ultra runners) would be really helpful.

looking forward to the chat and motivation Smile

mad4 · 22/01/2012 14:37

meant to add avoncalling that i have always found while training that my lungs and my legs seem to train at different rates? some days my legs feel strong and like i could run forever but i simply cannot breathe enough (ifswim) to keep going, wheras other days, i am barely out of breath but my legs are killing and i feel like its my legs holding me back.

you may well find the same as you progress with your training...just a thought?
