Couch to 5k 2011 Part Four: Post even if you haven't run!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2011 21:42

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

Some of us are on our second time round now, so don't worry that you will be behind, just jump in whatever stage you are at.

Hi All,

I went for a run this morning but I didn't make my 6 mile run or even my 3 mile run Blush as I didn't get out of bed and get on with the day but lay there reading for too long before running went out for lunch and needed to get back home for a shower and prettying up before I left. I did manage a 2.5 mile run so thats mostly ok isn't it?

Anyway, it was a bit blustery and showery this morning so I took the path out of the wind and luckily I was in between heavy showers so I didn't get too wet, except for my feet which were a bit soggy by the time I got back in, grr I don't like having wet, cold feet. Anyway, my time was OK, not fast but not slow either so thats ok I guess. Lunch was scrummy though Grin.

So, tomorrow will should be Shredding of some sort and I am thinking of extending my Jillian library to include the cardio DVD but worry that it really will make me phone it in and not run so i can use it in and emergency, you know, snow or ice or general feebleness.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/11/2011 20:41

Nell? I know the thread says post even if you haven't run, but I meant if you haven't run for a few days or a week or so not months. What about a nice walk instead? Come on! You can do it!

No running here today either, my legs and feet were tired after Friday's efforts, and we have been out a lot (walked a few miles at least) so not too bad. I have bought a gym ball to start doing some core strength work with.

Where is everyone based?
I bet there is no-one near me in central London (there never is!) but wouldn't be it great to have a running buddy. My kids refuse to run with me, they have only done it once each lazy sods

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/11/2011 22:22

I'm never sure Kid - I've only tried running with someone else once and it nearly killed me trying to keep up, she was only slightly faster than me but over 5k it was a bit of an embarrassment! I also like getting out on my own and it saves having to coordinate times with someone else, but on the other hand it is a great incentive to get out there. I'm in Hampshire, don't think anyone else is particularly near here? Not that I've detected anyway.

DS (7) came out with me once on his scooter, we had a lovely time, but he hasn't offered to try it again.

A couple of running friends have suggested we run together, but I've managed to fob them off so far! I would feel obliged to talk to them and would probably die, plus I like to be unsociable and listen to music while I'm running. A friend and I did take our DC running once; it was good fun but we only ran for just over a kilometre and I was really struggling to talk and breathe at the same time (and all the children except DD2 ran faster than me).

I'm in Austria kid so there's no one near me on this thread. There's not even anyone very near me on MN as a whole AFAIK.

I think I'm going to go out for a very short run tomorrow, provided I can get my work finished tonight (if I stop letting myself being distracted by MN). I've never had any problems up to 2 or 3 km, but I think I might be extra cautious and start with 1 km. Must also remember to do some stretches after my warm-up walk. I still haven't got round to finding out about any leg/knee strengthening exercises either.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/11/2011 22:46

Oops, sorry Linzer, haven't PM'd you yet.

LinzerTorte · 27/11/2011 22:50

It's OK WhoKnows, I wasn't hinting! I wouldn't have had time to look at them let alone do any yet anyway, with work having been manically busy, but I'm hoping that things will calm down a bit next week.

Shock
LinzerTorte · 27/11/2011 23:20

No, don't go Nell! Stay and talk nail varnish with me (I've been slacking on the running front recently too). We could even talk about thinking about going running. Wink

kid · 27/11/2011 23:29

So, so you all paint your toenails all year round?
I don't see the point at this time of year, no-one is going to see them. I do have nail varnish on my toes, but its only on half of each nail as its been so long since I done them Blush

I have a gym buddy and when one of us don't fancy going, we feel bad for letting the other one down so that makes us go. I'm the only one running here and I feel that if I don't want to do it, then it makes no difference to anyone else. I should have gone out this morning but I didn't so now I have to go tomorrow to keep on track. But, its going to be a very long day for me as I'm at work and I have a gym class at 6pm.

I don't know how far I run during the initial days of c25k, I am guessing its virtually nothing. I am very Envy of those that can do long runs. I can just about manage the 60 seconds at the moment, thats really bad lol

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/11/2011 23:33

Only teasing Nell, come back, we need you to guide us in all matters of manicure

Kid - I do toes only in summer, fingers only in winter, that way they each get six months to recover. Don't worry about your distances for now, just keep to a pace that allows you to finish the interval. When I started I was extremely slow, but have picked up speed over time.

OP posts:
JelliBelli · 27/11/2011 23:48

I frightened myself at about W4 as I ran too fast and now I am relatively slow as I always hold back in case i do too much (too soon) again. I get cross with myself about this but struggle to overcome the sensation Angry.

I try to run with DH as its more fun than running with music - he is more entertaining! He is also about 30 years quicker than me Envy

Have a good week everyone

LinzerTorte · 28/11/2011 08:56

My nails are only half-painted at the moment too - they still have red varnish on from the summer. Blush

Well, I ran for 1.5 k with no problems - apart from the fact that my shoes are really rubbing against my ankles with the gel insoles in them, and it was quite painful even with a plaster and two pairs of socks. Really can't complain too much about it compared to the pains I was getting in my leg, though - and hopefully the skin will harden up eventually. I made sure I did some stretches after my warm-up walk and then after the run, and will do some knee/leg exercises later.

I definitely started off too fast as I was thinking that it was "only" 1.5 k, but it still felt like hard work. I'll do another couple of 1.5 k runs on Wednesday and Friday, and then increase it to 2 k next week.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2011 09:05

Well done Linzer, can you get compeed blister patches in Austria? They might be what you need to protect that bit of skin.

Double Decker Red

I am also one for leaving toenail varnish on at the end of summer till it grows out for weeks, but find it stains them quite badly, so I like to let them grow out totally over the winter. I noticed one of my fingers was starting to look a bit flaky the other day, so I try and give them a day off between polishes and give them a good rub with almond oil that day.

Went out for my first run this morning, left hubby with the kids and off I went. Was very red in the face but didn't feel quite as knackered as I thought I would, especially considering all the hills around here. Could have do e without bumping into my daughter's headmaster on the way home though!

LinzerTorte · 28/11/2011 09:13

I don't know WhoKnows - I'll have a look out for them, or maybe I can find something similar. A normal plaster definitely isn't enough, anyway.

molly Well done on your run; I also hate bumping into people I know!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2011 09:16

Well done Molly, yes, bumping into people you know is somewhat off-putting!

Hi everyone, i completed week one today (in the rain)!
I dont look good running, i think i run flat footed, i wish i could run better.

Wont be able to start week 2 until friday now, is it scary?

brighthair · 28/11/2011 21:10

Week 2 run 1 done I gave up on about 20 secs of the last run, calf burn strikes again Grin
But did all my increased weights and finished with a 100m sprint just to make up for it

kid · 28/11/2011 21:23

whats the difference between week 1 and week 2?
I was meant to complete w1 today but had to change my plans. My new plans are to do 2 more runs this week on w1 and then start w2 on Sunday. It will mean I did 4 runs on w1 but I figured thats fine as I don't want to over do it!
(no chance of that happeningGrin)

brighthair · 28/11/2011 22:11

I am just using the written plan not podcasts so don't know if they are the same?
Week 2 run for 90secs walk 2 mins

kid · 28/11/2011 23:19

ok, week 1 was run for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds so i guess it sounds pretty similar. I can just about manage the 60 seconds, 90 seconds is going to push me even harder

BafanaThesober · 28/11/2011 23:37

Hey all,

Glad to see that we are all still talking about nail polish, far more important than the running Grin.

Out tonight for the first time in a week, although have been averaging 2.5 miles a day walking the dog!
So was week 6,day 2. I am not understanding why I am getting slower though, although I suspect it is fear of burning out too soon. Am still managing 4,4km in the time, so still feel that 5 in 30 will be achievable by the end of the programme (she says crossing her fingers).

Treated myself to a pair of jogging bottoms, coz it is way too cold to run in the three quarter Capri shorts. Very blustery and slightly raining, but I am so glad that I pushed myself out the door.

Well done to everyone on week one and two. It is amazing how quickly it builds up to something beyond what you thought possible!!

Right
Night all

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/11/2011 13:34

Morning all.

I am back from the frozen north with a new hair do and several more inches around my middle from our friends' fabulous cooking and wine collection. I have done no exercise for over a week so struggled around the block this morning telling myself that I'd have to get my act together if I wanted to do the half that I've been thinking about. Just over 4k in 34 minutes, with lots of stopping at traffic lights to catch my breath (on good days I sprint through them even if they are about to change, on bad days I slow down as I approach them to allow them to change before I get there Grin)

It's unseasonably warm here - I took a long sleeved top but ended up running in my vest. I walked home at 9.30 last night in a long sleeved tee short, carrying my cardi and my coat.
