all welcome to come and join in - we talk a lot on here, and are always glad of new people to natter with about running (and everything else)

rhetorician · 18/09/2011 11:18

just realised that only the elites have even started - no disrespect to any of 'our' runners, but I don't think any of you are quite in the elite category :o

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 18/09/2011 11:20

Massive respect to Mo Farah for staying at the start and high five-ing the runners as they cross the start line - still going 36 mins later!

The woman in the lead is just incredible!

sfxmum · 18/09/2011 11:25

I can't look when those stories go on it just turns me into mush and I don't like it.
But Mo Farah is awesome and seems like such a nice young man

I went out for my run just as soon as the elite runners set out, there is a river run this morning and the towpath would be super crowded had I left it any later, as it is only met stewards

Looks like good weather for GNR

hope everyone is feeling well and enjoying the weekend I now have some alone time
and we all have colds nothing serious but highly annoying, and every time we sneeze the guinea pigs jump, actually it is kind of funny

June2009 · 18/09/2011 11:55

lol @ the guinea pig sfx

thanks backwards There is a special space on the t-shirt for putting the name on (it all sounds really well organised doesn't it).

moshi am also avoiding anything that could potentially cause injury this week. Last time I hurt my knee was going in the bath tub though.

tulip hope you're not too down about your 10k, races are all different, doesn't mean that the same will happen next week. I'd say sign up for another 10k really soon so you can improve on the last one. Then the "bad" one is "one that you did a while back" rather than "the last one you did" iyswim. (psychological crap :D)

Very slow morning and dd completely out of synch so really not sure if I can go for a run today...

DebiTheScot · 18/09/2011 12:59

I'm in the huff because I'm not allowed to watch GNR (we were out when it was on) because of the Old Firm game. And going out again later so not sure when I'll fit it in.
Nice 10 mile cycle this morning (apart from when a man overtook me & vanished into the distance while I was going up a hill)

ibbydibby · 18/09/2011 13:42

Debi I also failed to see a single bit of GNR - DS2 hogged the TV completely. I would normally just turnhim out in the garden and watch, but he has gone down with a cough and cold, and looking v miserable.

When I first read your post I assumed you meant a man driving - presume you mean another cyclist? Runner...? I went for a run this morning and was interrupted from day dreaming by a shout of "Do you want a drink, Ibby?" I turned round and it was a cyclist, but I could not for the life of me figure out who, because he was in complete cycling gear, including helmet and shades, and the sun was shining on him. Fortunately he had shorts on so I could ID him by the tattoos on his legs!!! Never been offered a drink en route before!

Looking froward to GNR reports...

rhetorician · 18/09/2011 13:59

am hitting refresh obsessively on a regular basis. Big sporting weekend here - Ireland beat the Aussies in the World Cup yesterday and then it's the biggest weekend in the Gaelic football calendar - the All-Ireland. Dublin v Kerry. Up the Dubs!

off to a party with dd now. back later :)

Wheelybug · 18/09/2011 14:06

Missed the start of gnr as was made to go out for breakfast ! But saw the last televised bit. Looks fab - will be trying the ballot again next yr. Best friend just text to say she did 2.44 and didn't train mch. The last 2 years she's been quicker but busted her knees . So good result for her.

Hope the mumsnet team did well

Good luck for your 10k backward

squix - sorry to ehear about your ankle - the curse of GSR ? We can hobble together. Seriously though I hope you're back up soon but take care.

peach glad your dd is doing ok at nursery - hope week 2 goes ok . And don't worry about the comments - spirit is good....

M on phone so probably missed lots. Will read properly tonight.

Ankle here feeling ok after unplanned 8 yesterday - was actually only 7.75 when mapped (footpod garmin is v inaccurate - need to join the gps garmin owners club) but still a positive step .

squix · 18/09/2011 14:38

Thanks for all the ankle related wishes - the side of my foot is now a lovely shade of purple and I have a great big bruise on my thigh too - Ahhhh the joys.

Just watched the GNR - some great performances, Nell McAndrew as usual was great, both the elite races were fantastic. At the start DH commented on the age of the elite women (most mid to late 30's) - it must be one of the few sports were an extra few years for a woman are a big advantage - not that I am comparing my self to the elites by any stretch - but I am probably at 40 the fittest I have ever been. Looking forward to the race reports later.

June -second having something else to put on feet after a half - i have a pair of croc flip flop type things which were just great. I was desperate to get my shoes off! I actually carried very little with me - jelly babies and tissues. DH was doing transport so no keys and I left my cheapo pay as you go phone in my bag on the luggage truck. I figured that there were enough stewards with communication devices to contact Dh if the need arose.

DrNortherner · 18/09/2011 14:40

Hello all! Been watching GNR in tears! Am so in awe of everyone's dedication, motivation and reasons to run Smile Makes me so proud to be a runner.

Nell was the first celeb back, I heart her so much Grin

Was in floods when the red arrows went passed and when they interviewed his wife, she only just lost her husband and it was the first half she had run without him.

My SIL did it in 1.50, she is dead chuffed.

Can't wait to hear race reports!

squix · 18/09/2011 14:41

wheely - maybe a 3 legged GSR ? Will we have even 3 good legs between us?

Wheelybug · 18/09/2011 14:43

Ooh we might get on telly if we do that ;-)

fannybanjo · 18/09/2011 14:45

Oh. My. Good. God. Grin. I. Finished. It!!!!

1hr 57min - with a stop for wee so pretty pleased as it was bloody busy and I was far back in pens. 1906th female overall and 1918th person (male and female) in age group!!!!

I will update tonight with Fanny style race report although pleased to report not a skid Mark in sight.... BlushSmile

sfxmum · 18/09/2011 14:50

yeah for fanny Grin who is clearly on a massive high, look forward to report

squix · 18/09/2011 14:50

Well done Fanny!

peachsmuggler · 18/09/2011 14:54

Wow! Well done Fanny, you did brilliantly. Can't wait to hear the gory details!

Well done to your SIL DrNo!

Missed the coverage so hoping the race reports are lengthy and descriptive!!!!

Pawsnclaws · 18/09/2011 15:20

Well done Fanny, my friend finished in 1.56 so will ask her if she saw a sweaty Fanny at the finish!

orangehead · 18/09/2011 15:48

oh well done Fanny thats fantastic. You must be on such a high Grin

fannybanjo · 18/09/2011 15:57

Might as well do race report whilst bored sat in car....

Right. Here goes. First ever race report and race.

Up at 6.10am - felt bit nervous and excited. Cup of tea and Pain Au Chocolate then kit on and ready to go by 6.45am! DH was slightly Hmm as race was still 4 hours away however I informed him to hurry the f*ck up...

Metro quiet at this unearthly hour, few runners on and we were at Haymarket for 8.30am. Glad left in plenty of time as an hour later mass exodus of Lycra, BO and worn out trainers headed our way towards start. Was very impressed at entrepreneurial skills of the ice cream van man selling bananas at £1 EACH! Banana and water drank. Toilet stop. Jesus I feel for the poor sod who empties the Tardis's of Shit. However I was a lady and left mine in the Travelodge... Grin

DH and DD1 headed off and I went into pen in Zone F and soon found out I was (time wise) way back than should have been Hmm but tough titty, just made it more interesting! People were fighting for space in bushes to pee in but I refused to bare my arse so cursed myself for drinking water as was dancing trying to not wet myself. Knew I'd have to stop at first portaloos on race. Hmm

Race started. Men were getting their knobs out at start line and pissing into central reservation! Grin Even I was embarrassed...

First 3 miles kept at 8.3m/m to 9m/m pace, going over Tyne Bridge fantastic! At 3 mile mark bladder bursting so had to stop. Garmin paused but obviously can't pause chip so bit annoyed at myself for drinking too much.

Weather was fine, sunny and dry. Next few miles very busy, people starting to walk, i was struggling to get past people (was running on grass verge when could) and couldn't get much faster 9 min mile. Felt good though.

Got to 9 miles and felt it a bit. Paramedics were giving life saving procedures to a few men along the way which threw me, was quite upsetting.

Heavens opened - was torrential. Nice to cool down but going from warm to cool hard. Last 3 miles slowest, again hard to get going but felt good but knew if I pushed myself too much it'd be my downfall, my ankle twisted in a pot hole, felt it and my aim then was just to finish. I knew I'd do it

futurity · 18/09/2011 16:31

Great race report! Yuk at men with knobs out Wink Sad at paramedics working on people and Smile at you helping the fainting lady ..did giggle and you shoving a Snickers in her mouth!

You did so well! Seems really busy on the tv..I wonder how anyone gets a decent pace going.

fannybanjo · 18/09/2011 16:46

futurity honestly, it was filth. Bell ends on show and everything! Grin funny though.

To get a decent pace and keep it you need to be in Orange Zones (pens A to D) Yes I could have worked harder at getting past and people do but its bloody hard work speeding up then slowing, I'm not making excuses, it's a fact.... Wink.

However I have now been spoiled by GNR being my first race as I'll do another HM and it won't shine a light to it! I can't wait to do it again!

Anyone know if I get automatic entry into next years?

ibbydibby · 18/09/2011 17:07

Brilliant time Fanny and loved your race report...felt like I was there with you.

Hope you have a good journey home, and enjoy basking in the glory...wear your medal for the next week at least!

backwardpossom · 18/09/2011 17:18

squix we commented on the age of the elite athletes, too. I'm fitter now than I've ever been at 28 so am hoping it only gets better. Some of the best female runners in my club are in their late 30s. :)

I love Nell too, DrNo - she's my running idol. Forget Paula, it's Nell all the way for me!

fanny you absolute legend! What a fab race report and bloody well done! Seriously awesome Grin

My 10k today was brilliant Grin - the weather wasn't great, wind and rain, and because it was on the coast, you can imagine just how windy it was. No shelter from it at all! I started off pretty well, about 8:30min/mile like I did a couple of weeks ago at my dreadful 10k. Got to 2 miles and was feeling fantastic, up the first big hill (where I overtook someone - I love hills, she didn't) and then it was downhill to the harbour where some friends from the club were there to cheer me on. :) Still feeling great, got to about 8k when I realised I could be on for a PB so kept up the pace. Then the hill of doom arrived at 9k and, get this, there was a pipe band playing at the top!! I caught up on a woman there and followed her to the final straight where I started sprinting and bombed past her to cross the finish in 55:55 - 3 seconds off my previous PB. Am delighted Grin

Wonder how our other GNRunners are doing!

futurity · 18/09/2011 17:21

backward great report..sounds like a joy of a run despite the weather and hills which you seem to loveSmile

DrNortherner · 18/09/2011 17:44

Fanny fab race report, well done you. You got yourself a fab time for your first half Smile Shocking so many people were ill. SIL said she saw lots of people getting treatment. Terrible.

But really £1 for a banana?! Wonder how much he made......

backward great report from you too and well done on your PB Grin It's such a great feeling isn't it?

Watching GNR really makes me want to do it. Fingers crossed I get a place in 2012.
