Good luck everyone for this weekend's races - we have a busy few week ends don't we.

I wear size 7 shoes and run in an 8.5

futurity · 23/09/2011 19:46

Good luck for everyone this weekend! Busy few weeks ahead!

MoshiMoshi · 23/09/2011 20:21

Good luck to possum, doyou, june, tulip (might see you there? I will be wearing a very tasteful yellow with a blue band West 4 running vest) and ibby! May the force be with you in your races and, more importantly, here's hoping those turtles keep at bay Grin!

DrNortherner · 23/09/2011 20:27

Yes good luck indeed to all of you racing this weekend Smile Look forward to reading your reports.

I did 5 miles today and came back and iced my bloomin leg, I can feel the tendon feels quite enlarged. Wish it would buggar off now. Hopefully, will get 8 miles in tomorrow.

Don't think I could run in a shoe 1.5 sizes bigger than normal, will stick to half a size up I think. Have had shoes properly fitted so should be OK.

DS making noises he wants to pack in football, telling him to think about it. If he does, it means I am free to race on Sundays Grin

DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 20:35

This thread is great. If I hadn't told you all I was going for a run today I'd have had to really make myself go. But I had no probs motivating myself to go. I did 4 miles at 8.40m/m (actually it was 3 slightly faster and a slow one to finsih). That's 4 runs this week and 20 miles which is very far for me. Only problem is my right shin was sore afterwards. I've iced it and hope it's ok tomorrow.

Not doing Rat Race Sad. The guy who was trying to make me do it (ds2's godfather) is totally snowed under with a stressful project at work and was going to really struggle to take Sunday off. Also we discovered we couldn't actually get into London before 8.40am and you have to be there by 8 at the latest.

Very interesting comments from you Rhet, paws and sticky about uni students. Our Inset day today (I'm a teacher in case you didn't know) was all about developing 'Powerful Learners'. We are going to make all or students Resiliant, Resourceful, Reflective and Reciprocitive (we've changed that one to Relationships as we students don't know what it means). This is going to make them take control of their learning and make them far more independant and solve all of your problems Rhet Grin (or it could all be bollocks and/or replaced with something else when there's another change in government and before we've had a chance to find out if it works.
Your comment was very interesting paws as my school is in a very well off area and is top 2 or 3 in the county each year in terms of exam results. But I think this means some of our students have no resiliance because they've never needed it. They get what they want, when they want and their teachers have the time to spend telling them what to do helping them.

peachsmuggler · 23/09/2011 21:01

Good luck this weekend possum, doyouthink (if you are about!), June, tulip, Moshi ( are you still doing this?, and ibby!!!

Man, you guys have big feet, and small wrists!!! I wear a 5 in normal shoes and run in 5.5

Wheely, aw poor old DD2.

paws, I think I might be you! Other than the Law (I did History), our schooling and Uni experiences sound almost identical!

Rhet, my niece is starting Uni this month and my sister just about still gets her dressed...sigh

all these high powered jobs are making my head spin! I did IT in the city before I had DD, well paid, but not high powered. I don't miss it one bit, and like you Wheely, would like to go back to something more interesting.

MoshiMoshi · 23/09/2011 21:01

I have just booked myself onto two sightseeing runs of SF! A 6 mile run with a group on Wednesday at 6:30am and a 10 mile run with a guide on Thursday at 7am. I hope DH wasn't planning on a lazy morning (ahem) with me Grin. I have checked on Google and the guide for Thursday does not seem very speedy but it should be OK as next week is an easy running week as tapering starts.

backwardpossom · 23/09/2011 21:36

Thanks for the good luck wishes for tomorrow. Am very nervous, but also very excited!

Wheely it's called "Triathlon Made Easy" this one - It's quite reassuring - I've read the transitions section about 6 times now...!

DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 21:49

possum if you've got the transition bit sussed my top tip would be to concentrate on your breathing in the swim. I was so nervous in my first one that I found it very hard to breathe and found the swim very hard. Oh and the awful lead/jelly feeling in your legs does go away on the run.

orangehead · 23/09/2011 21:52

Have you done a Triathlon before possom?
Well my friday night has consisted of sewing the arm back on fat spiderman, what an exciting life I lead. At least ds1 will think Im a hero tomorrow.

DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 21:54

Oh and I meant to say earlier. I've got a few voucher codes for discounts off running stuff from this shop I don't know what it's like price wise compared to others but it might be worth a look if you want stuff. The codes are-
20% off Oakley sunglasses: SUN20
20% off New Balance: NEW20
£40.00 off Garmin: GAR40
£15.00 off footwear: SHO15

Pawsnclaws · 23/09/2011 22:09

An exciting weekend of running/tri ahead - good luck to you all and will be sending you positive vibes. And obviously waiting impatiently for the race reports .....

Hoping to do a good long run tomorrow, should be 20 but am going to play it by ear as I'm still not 100% and I don't want to wreck my chances of actually doing the marathon. In just two weeks!

Would post more but am multi tasking - watching the dreadful Toddlers and Tiaras. Will catch up tomorrow unless I get hit by a satellite!

MoshiMoshi · 23/09/2011 22:12

possum - my best tips for a triathlon:

  1. Keep wide of pack if want to avoid being caught in washing machine scrum at start of swim. Getting stuck behind breaststrokers is annoying though so don't dilly dally at the start.
  2. Kick hard with feet towards end of swim to avoid dizzy feeling on exiting water.
  3. Ensure Bodyglide or similar applied to aid removal of wetsuit!
  4. Don't forget to put on helmet before leaving transition with bike or be disqualified (is however OK to run with helmet although will feel a prat). I put on first thing to ensure it isn't forgotten.
  5. Shout "on your right" when overtaking (as am sure you will be on bike!)
  6. Cruise into run as lead legs feeling will soon pass after first mile or so.
DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 22:19

moshi your 1st point is partly what puts me off an open water swim! Sounds scary! (I think possum's is in a pool)

rhetorician · 23/09/2011 22:21

oh, offers...

yes, students, sigh...I can't ever remember being deluged with quite so many 'I am lost and confused and I want you to fix it for me' emails. They're supposed to be bloody confused! I find myself a bit out of step sometimes as I was brought up to be independent from a young age (had to be, but that makes it sound like a sob story) and assume that this is my job as a parent. I think it's perfectly ok for dd to help make her own porridge in the morning (avoiding the bits involving heat, of course), but people look at me Hmm when I tell them we do this.

just heard that DD's grandad has seen specialist and needs big operation, but that prognosis is very good. So that's a good thing to start the weekend with.

Looking forward to all the race reports!!

June2009 · 23/09/2011 22:22

This thread really makes me LOL, big feet and small wrists, maybe that should be a requirement to the joining of the thread ;)
drno I too was wondering what the different shoe sizes were all about, I'm a 4 whatever I do but plan on getting fitted from a proper running shop before the next event I do so will keep you updated :D
wheely lol @ driving the gel down here, only another runner would know how important these things are Grin
I must be getting nervous I keep loosing stuff, first the credit card to enter the ticketless car park, then my water bottle, then my gels (yes after all this I managed to temporarily loose them this afternoon). Found everything though.
Also had a panic thinking the race was tomorrow and not sunday :S
Time to go to bed I think :D

rhetorician · 23/09/2011 22:26

oh, do I have to get off, I've got small feet and big wrists! I know people say this all the time, but I actually do have big bones (DP is about the same height but her wrists are miniscule compared to mine)

june2009 good luck (give me mammy a wave as you go round!) - am Envy now, although I am knackered and my legs are sore!

OP posts:
orangehead · 23/09/2011 22:39

Do you know when the operation will be Rhet? Have you managed to arrange a visit yet? Hope everything goes ok

rhetorician · 23/09/2011 22:43

not sure, but I think they are going to come to us (which is the usual arrangement) sometime in october. I usually just give them my car and they take dd off to do fun things. It does involve a lot of cooking though!

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 23/09/2011 22:43

Thanks moshi the swim is in a pool, so I should be ok - it's being done in heats, so the swimmers in my lane should technically be a similar speed to me as we had to give an accurate estimate of the swim. I quite fancy doing one on open water though - maybe next time! The cycling is the bit I'm most concerned about though, as I am more of a swimmer and runner! Not the fastest cyclist!!

orange this is my first tri, thought I'd give it a bash :)

Right I must go to bed, as I'll have to leave here at 7am!

orangehead · 23/09/2011 22:49

Thats probably best with dp Rhet.

sfxmum · 23/09/2011 22:51

quickly by to wish good luck for those of you racing this weekend especially the triathlon, look forward to the reports

June2009 · 24/09/2011 10:09

aww rhet, ok, will wave insanely at some point for your mam :)
Do you think you might do it next year? or is it just at the wrong time forever because of bdays? have a lovely time tomorrow!

Do you put your name (for people to cheer you on) at the front or at the back of your t-shirt? I'm thinking the back is probably where it's more likely to stay put.

Can't wait for backward's report of her tri, I would like to sign up for one next year I think. though I'm a hopeless swimmer, would definitely need some lessons.

good luck to all the other runners this weekend :D

orangehead · 24/09/2011 10:17

Did parkrun this morning got 30.32 Sad just can't get sub 30. I always have to have a 20/30 secs walk up the 3rd hill. I could probably run up it but then they would be no way I could run up the 4th and last hill which is the big one. Maybe I shoud do some hill work, but don't think I could manage an extra run in the week so the only way would be do hill work instead of intervals. What do you all think is best to do hill work or intervals?
Hope the racing going ok

rhetorician · 24/09/2011 10:23

30.32 is still a great time - perhaps hill work would help, e.g. if you didn't have to take that very brief walk break. On the flat you'd definitely do sub-30 though.

Beautiful day - am Envy of June 2009 running my home turf (oops, nearly wrote 'turd', which many seem to think is appropriate for SE London) - sure that the river will look magnificent today. I think I might try and do it next year and fold in a grown up birthday treat for dp, who loves London
