When I was at home full time with the kids I was doing degree in childhood studies with OU. Loved it, it was so good to do something other than just being a mum. Glad she enjoying it

rhetorician · 22/09/2011 22:00

orange that must have taken some organisation, given how much of OU is self-directed. Well, small children have their charms (casts mind back to DD's tantrum about not being allowed to do whatever it was, and wonders) and are interesting in the abstract (I love trying to work out how dd perceives the world, and now, particularly, how she learns), but they are not always the most scintillating company ('bounce again, mummy!'), so it's good to have other things on the go as well

am really looking forward to my run tomorrow - the first one this week not under time pressure.

Absolutely, I loved being at home with the DDs and being "Mum" is a joy and a privilege, but that feeling of getting the suit back on and thinking "yeah, shit hot lawyer" was good :). Keep force feeding DD vitamin tablets!

orangehead · 22/09/2011 22:21

I was single at the time and both dc were very good at going to bed at night so had a good few hours to kill at night. Needed something to keep me from feeling lonely sane, and I didnt know about mumsnet back then.

ibbydibby · 22/09/2011 22:40

Sorry about the stress at work, Orange, your degree must have taken a large amount of self discipline as well as organisation! I tutor on a masters course, and though I know my own module inside out, I keep thinking I should really work through some of the others....but do I...do I heck.

No running club for me tonight as DH away. Hoping to go to a different parkrun venue on Sat, there is one in the town where my mum lives about 30 miles away. Have promised to go over and do her garden, so thought it would be rather novel to go over early and do parkrun. Plan is dependent on DS1 & DS2 being up, ready and willing - they are v keen at the moment, but DS1 does like his weekend lie-ins! DH not back until Sun afternoon so if they don't want to do it, I can't. Will need to be mega organised and pack change of clothes, shower stuff etc tomorrow night.

Rhet when is DPs birthday meal? Have we missed it?!

rhetorician · 22/09/2011 22:44

ibby it's on Sunday - so no, you haven't missed it. was supposed to talk to SIL about it today, as it is now a celebration of her birthday (10 days ago) as that lunch was cancelled because DN managed to get impetigo! but didn't have time today - I think we are still planning on some kind of tart, salads and a yummy cake (dd thinks that the only acceptable birthday presents are (a) cake and (b) a teddy...she did make me buy a baby blanket for her little sister today though )

Tried my shiny new trainers on what was planned to be a 5k run tonight. Started a bit worried running in new trainers for the first time they are a size and a half bigger that I usually wear so look huge on my feet but once I got going they felt fantastic and I was going really fast and strong (for me) and was heading for a 34 min 5k when with 0.7 miles to go I got a bad case of runners tummy and just had to stop and stand Still for a while till the feeling went away then get myself back to the car as quick as pos to go home. So bloody frustrating I was so pleased at how the run was going. I can't work out why it happens it will happen for 3 or 4 runs then nothing for months.

Pawsnclaws · 22/09/2011 23:11

N4nny I have new shoes today - just took them for a 5 mile test drive. Was a bit nervous as I went up half a size but they seemed fine. My normal shoe size is 6.5 but these are officially Clown Shoes - an 8!

Sympathies with the tummy, I find avoiding wheat helps.

N4NNY · 23/09/2011 07:08

paws I went from a 5 to a 6.5 my non running shoes are usually a 4 I also felt like a clown and very very White I didn't need my hi vis vest cos you could see my clown feet from mars. :o

MoshiMoshi · 23/09/2011 08:16

I'm another one to wear enormous trainers! Usual shoe size 4.5, running shoes 5.5/6! Sadly, I still suffer from black toenails Hmm

DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 08:55

Haha, I read paws comment to June about 'they're always on 3 for 2' as being about tummy tucks Grin
8 stone is unbelievable! I'm guessing though that most of the tummy you've got left is over stretched skin which I'd imagine is hard to get rid of (sorry that wasn't meant to make you feel worse about it!)

Manic day yest with work then picked up the boys from cm took them home, waited 30 mins for dh to get home then back to work for open evening then home at 9.30 then made cakes for McMillan coffee morning. Inset day today whichstarts in 7 minutes and they haven't told us what it's about yet. Sure it'll be riveting though.

DebiTheScot · 23/09/2011 08:57

My running shoes are an 8! I'm normally a 7. DS2 could hide inside one of them.

Speaking ofrunning, I brought my stuff to work and I am going to go for a runthis afternoon. And if when I do, it'll be 4 runs this week for the first time in a long time.

orangehead · 23/09/2011 09:45

Aw thats sweet Rhet, we got ds1 a present from ds2 when he was born so they exchanged presents when he was born (obviously ds2 needed some help Grin) that seem to help ds1.
ibbydibby hope you get organised enough for the new parkrun. I keep thinking about going to another one. Quite lucky as have two parkruns very close to me. However the other has a running club at the park so think most of the people that go are from the club as the times are very fast and think I would come last. The one I go to I am no where near last so a good confidence boast even though I know I'm not a fast runner. However the other one is quite flat but the one I do is very hilly.
Thats a shame N4NNY especially with you doing so well. Fingers crossed your next time you will be fine, or legs crossed should I say. My running shoes are size 8 Im normally size 7, I used to be size 5 before I had the kids.
Moshi just paint all your other toes black and they will look fine. Do they hurt or are they just black? Sorry if thick question, never suffered from it.
paws I find avoiding milk helps me, I was really good for a while and completely cut it out. But now I can't help having a bit of chocolte or cheese every now and again. I suffer for it but can't help it, I'm my own worst enemy.
Hope you get out for your run Debi

sfxmum · 23/09/2011 09:59

hello

missMuddle well done hope leg behaving itself now

orange sorry about the work and home stresses. I am with the OU at atm, but completion of degree is still about 18months away depending on what I choose and how busy I am. I like to get the brain cells going.

rhet very sweet of dd

thinking about shoes, seems I definitely need bigger ones at the very least half a size up but my normal is already a 7, canoes here I come.

happy running all

and btw speedy friend wants to do same race as me, not sure this is a good thingGrin

Pawsnclaws · 23/09/2011 10:03

I get black nails - IME they hurt while there is pressure under them eg a blister then start to lift away and become painless.

I try and avoid wheat unless I'm having a Starbucks cinnamon swirl (!) and I can't have milk or cream or soft cheeses as I get stomach cramps and the trots. Ds2 has to be gluten free and ds3 has a very serious nut allergy which we discovered in pretty dramatic and scary fashion. So as a family we are a real catch Hmm.

orangehead · 23/09/2011 10:03

I have not finished yet sfxmum, did 3 years. Really need to finish it but taken a few years out due to problems with ds2. Now thinking when on earth would I fit it in. But will finish it.

Pawsnclaws · 23/09/2011 10:06

Oh and no alcohol for me for the past month. I'm a very cheap date at the mo.

orangehead · 23/09/2011 10:09

That must of been scary paws. We had ds2 on wheat free fo a while (under advise of hospital) as he has a lot of tummy problems and still has accidents at age 8 as he so loose (sorry tmi) but didn't really help. They now wondering if his accidents could be due to tourettes, he has alot of tics, and apparently you can get bowel tics with tourettes. They seem to be going round in circles with different ideas don't know what to think.

orangehead · 23/09/2011 10:11

What you doing with ou sfx

orangehead · 23/09/2011 10:12

Sorry I keep forgetting question marks.

peachsmuggler · 23/09/2011 10:17

Well done Missmuddle, that's a great time. Glad the injury didn't stop you running!

Wheely, i would drop the second speed session yea, I think you can easily do a sub 2 hour HM with 4 runs a week. You are pretty speedy anyway and have loads of miles in your legs already!

Rhet, if you are finding the managing the intervals easy, then defo cut down the recovery. Maybe stay at the same speed for now on the fast bits but cut down to 1 min recovery. The interval sessions which I feel have benefitted me most are the , omg I'm gonna puke ones!

I also read paws post as 3 for 2 tummy tucks Grin. similarly DrNo posted a few days ago about hill session in which the coach took them to the top of the hill. My lazy assed brain was thinking of a bus of course....

Orange, you sound like a massively dedicated person. While you were studying away of an evening, I would probably have had my feet up with a vat glass of wine.

Moshi, I must admit to having a but of a lump in the throat at though of you leaving up for SF, but then realised you are a cyberspace chum, so you'll still be here. Hurrah!

Well, no tears from DD when I dropped her off at playgroup this morning! Makes such a difference, feel like a difference. Saw some runners on way home enjoying the beautiful sunshiny but not too warm day and was very envious!

sfxmum · 23/09/2011 10:20

orange I am doing Health and Social care, with emphasis on mental health and ageing and management, I worked for years managing small care homes mostly in learning disabilities and mental health and at some point specialised in autistic spectrum. Now I want to start a business in the area, but not a care home but providing home care, aiming for good quality and reliability which is sorely lacking.

paws milk and cheese are really bad for me in that respect too, I though it was just to do with the gallstones but had those out and the issues persist, dd not too keen on milk either but likes cheese ans yoghurt as do I.

sfxmum · 23/09/2011 10:22

peach glad dd ok this morning.

about tummy tucks and babies, some friends who had C-sections have told me the result varies wildly from surgeon to surgeon in terms of appearance, some do a neater tighter job than others

orangehead · 23/09/2011 10:36

peachs sill had odd glass of wine while studying, it helps you think.
I have gallstones too sfx [worrying that Im starting to sound like a hypochondriac on this thread], I have not had them removed but find I can control them with diet.
Regarding c-sections, my tummy is a mess because of mine. Am I being naive in thinking when I have another if I speak nicely to surgeon he might do it a bit neater job this time as it will be planned not emergency this timeSmile. Probably am, but I can dream. Also dream he might trim of some of the extra skin whilst he at it, yeah right.
