bonkersGrin at some point they will find the truth

ibbydibby · 20/09/2011 23:35

I think at 46 I may be the old lady of this thread?

Bonkers love your scab story...hope knee much better?

YeahThatsTheBadger · 20/09/2011 23:47

Hello all! I go to Donegal for 5 days and return to 2 hours worth of posts!

Well done all those who raced at the weekend-loved reading the race reports.

Didn't do any running while I was away but had a good chat to cousins super speedy dh. His secret is that his coach is an ultramarathon runner (who also happens to be a neighbour of my grannys). No wonder he has become so fast so soon!

Had a lovely mini holiday but returned to sad news that my very close friends dad died. Sad He was so very lovely. Was hoping that family was going to have a change go fortunes as over the last 6 years her mum has been successfully treated for lung cancer, her dad was on dialysis for kidney failure and at last received a transplant last year. On the day of his op, my friends sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. My heart breaks for them. Sad

On a cheerier note, i'm very excited about my race on the 2nd. There was a BBC Lifeline appeal for Huntington's Disease on last Sunday which helped remind me what i'm running for. DS on the other hand is not as excited because his race number hasn't come through yet but he's telling everyone he meets that he's doing a big run for big boys! Grin

peach sorry it's such a sad day for you. I'm sure it really helped your dad to have you to talk to about it.

orange I am so sorry you're family is going through such horrible stuff. We have a similarish, but not so immediate situation as you. Having a rant about it, without fear of being judged, really helps. So post on here or pm me if you want. Hope dn had a happier day today.

Sorry all those I haven't name checked. Posting on phone is always a pain to check back on the thread!

Bumply · 21/09/2011 00:46

Ibbydibby I'm 48, so does that make the eldest?
I'm a late starter as I think I've run more this month than in the previous 48.
Signed up for bupa 5 k although according to t + c I was one say over the cut off. They took my money though, and sent me s confirmation email so I'm hopeful.

fannybanjo · 21/09/2011 09:24

Ibby Grin at your DH taking "Wigglers" catalogue to school gates!! Middle age setting in?! My DH is well into gun dog training and when he goes to a shoot (although he doesn't shoot, he just works his dogs) and comes down in his checked shirt like my Grandad used to wear, I can't stop thinking at what point did we all of a sudden grow up? DH 40 soon and we've been together nearly 16 years and it's flown by. Garmin is ace isn't it? Best accessory I've bought (other than fanny pack...Wink)

Re hormones and running - I'm awful, my legs are ok pre-menstrual but when period starts my legs won't move.

orange hope all ok with DN and DB.

rhet sounds like a great plan - it's hard fitting it all in but you do a great job.

Moshi you're still here then.... Grin

Just sat in car waiting for my friend so we can do steady 6 miler at HM (or quicker) pace. I'm freezing my tits off. Running Gloves will be on in a couple of weeks. Hmm

orangehead · 21/09/2011 09:42

Bonkers thats funny, think you are best to lie to ds. 5 miles in that time wow thats brilliant.
ibbydibby 2.6 min mile would be impressive, in our dreams maybe.
So sorry to hear about your friend badger, sounds like they have been through a really tough time. Thank you, yes sometimes it good just to get it off your chest. Dn seems ok today going swimmng with him in a few mins.
Regarding periods, my energy levels the week before aways drop. I still go running but find it much harder. I also dont run on first two days as I am prone to flooding and had far too many embarrassing stories. Think physical exertion may not help the situation so have lazy days those two days.

encyclogirl · 21/09/2011 11:55

ibby I turned 46 this week. I think quite a few of us are 'of an age' Grin

sticky great to 'see' you! Looking good, kicking arse at the GNR!

fanny are you tempted to post your pic yet?

Welcome back badger and Bonkers I know what you mean, it's almost daunting to dive back in again if you miss a few days!

peach Unmumsnetty I know but feck it, What a shitty day for you.

Dr No laughing at you feeling lucky about your hills!

I managed 4 last night and was lucky to get that much done, due to kitchen renovation drama. We got this new beast of a stove and my dh wanted to install the gas part of things himself. Cue huge 'discussion' between us.

Much stropping and finally acceptance of the fact that he is not in fact a registered CORGI fitter and I am not prepared to risk a huge KABOOM just to avoid an arguement. So this morning I called a CORGI guy and he spent 10 mins lecturing me about how dangerous and illegal it would be for my dh to do the install himself. Yes I know that thanks, that's why I called you Hmm

Had to keep him sweet though as we live in the back of beyonds and I was trying to lure him out from the city.

No doubt he'll lecture dh too when he shows up, which will go down like a rat sandwich.

June2009 · 21/09/2011 12:05

loving the race reports, fanny your report is truly inspiring and I'm really psyched for my HM this weekend, cannot wait!

bonkers20 · 21/09/2011 12:56

Right...just about caught up!

Fanny WELL DONE! To have achieved a sub 2hr for your first 1/2 is really something. I laughed at you being ready at 6.45am! Do you know why you were placed in such a far back pen? Did you not have any race evidence to support an estimated time? I would really be thrown by not being able to run at my pace so well done you.

SLF WELL DONE! A massive 57 secs off your target in not easy running conditions. Your life sounds a bit dramatic at times. I hope your week is a bit calmer.

runforfun WELL DONE on getting a PB! How is your blister now?

I love reading the GNR race reports. I couldn't watch it because I had to take DS1 to sodding rugby.

Possum 3 sec off your PB in those conditions is bloody brill! Hills and wind.....no thank you! I do love a pipe band though!

I am 41 on Monday. How lovely that there are quite a few 40 somethings here.

MoshiMoshi · 21/09/2011 13:20

We have progress. Inlaws are babysitting thankfully and DH and I are SF-bound on Monday, back on Friday. I can relax knowing they are in charge with the lovely but slightly nutty housekeeper helping them with the boring bits. I hope I can fit in my running...

Last 20M today before I start tapering for Abingdon after Sunday's race. Tired from lack of sleep stressing about this whole move. Av pace 8:26m/m.

Kew Gardens with DD3 now to eat and indulge in Creepers'n'Climbers.

Apologies for the Me Me Me Post. On iPhone and must be brief. Therefore come across as selfish and ignorant and uninterested in others but is not true, honest. Grin

fannybanjo · 21/09/2011 13:39

Paws are you feeling any better today? What is the furthest you have ran so far in your training for Marathon? Hey I am in Chester, I may come and cheer you on!

Bonkers how funny re your scab - however your DH probably worried when he saw lovely dead skin all over the bed, probably praying it hadn't come off his knob! Grin Yes, you must lie to DS although I am now doubting how you really got the scab in the first place, sounds more like carpet burns to me! Thanks for encouragement re time - I do have to realise that for my first HM, I am not going to be speedy as it is the unknown and to get sub

bonkers20 · 21/09/2011 13:52

Moshi It's a long flight, what better way to avoid DVT than to jog around the plane for the duration!

Alternatively, you could bask in not having to do anything child related for a few days and watch back to back films (oh joy!).

You must tell us your flight details so we can plan your inflight entertainment for you. You don't plan on talking to your DH or anything daft like that do you?!

Oooooh, is your DH's company flying you out there? Do you get to turn left on the plane. Or maybe even upstairs. I bet they have a gym up there!

Pawsnclaws · 21/09/2011 14:21

fanny I did 18 miles the weekend before last - am still hopeful I'll make the 20 this weekend, am just a bit worried about the peculiar colour snot I'm producing huge amounts of (sorry!), I think I've got something going on with my sinuses as I literally have face-ache - what's that about then? If you make it to the Chester marathon I'll be the one looking really pissed off at the back, I normally like to tuck in just in front of the people dressed in heavy gorilla costumes and the like .....

moshi sounds like progress is being made, and you can breathe easy now the childcare worry is sorted.

bonkers what an appropriate name given how you lost your scab - just one question, what's a sex life? Rings a bell but can't think why.

On the age question .... hmm, well into my 40s is all I'm going to say.

sfxmum · 21/09/2011 14:25

Paws it sounds like sinusitis, plenty of steam, hope you feel better soon

moshi sounds hopeful, enjoy the trip

no running today cold annoying and tiring, plenty to keep me busy

course last night last minute change (business start up) there are plenty of mad people in the worldGrin

Pawsnclaws · 21/09/2011 14:28

Thanks sfx that was what I thought it must be - am steaming my face at the moment over a nice bowl of chicken and coconut soup with heaps of ginger and spices. I was making it in advance for dinner tonight but thought we wouldn't miss a small medicinal bowl!

rhetorician · 21/09/2011 14:32

finally have 5 minutes (having scoffed the remains of last night's chilli con quorne...) - very short of time on Wednesdays, so dropped dd at 9, ran for 35 minutes, dash home, shower, change, battle the wind on bike to work, teach class, teach next class, do lecture, dash home, pick up dd. You get the picture.

Legs a bit sore from running so much on pavement yesterday I think - but was just a recovery run in any case. Did about 3.5 miles

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 21/09/2011 15:05

paws are you taking Sudafed? If not GO GET SOME! It'll really help. Like I said other day, I had the same - it'll go as quick as it came. 18 miles still good enough to attempt marathon isn't it? I'm about to look at marathon training plans - if you've followed one, what plan was it? Mmmm your soup sounds gorgeous! Envy

rhet are you vegetarian?

Pawsnclaws · 21/09/2011 15:19

fanny this time I followed the Hal Higdon beginner plan, think it was 18 weeks. It's based on 4 runs a week, the longest working up to 20 and then one medium run midweek working up to 10, plus two midweek of between 3-5. The big mistake (apart from missing a crucial week with a cold Angry I made this time was trying to do it all over the school holidays, but apart from that it's a good plan.

Will look at the Sudafed asap!

fannybanjo · 21/09/2011 15:34

Oh good lord Paws Sudafed will release your sinuses - get thee to chemist ASAP! That's a Fanny Order! Yes, I can empathise on training over school holidays - I too struggled with GNR training over July/August. Are you local to Chester area or travelling a good way? I'm considering the Great Manchester Marathon end of April, would be perfect training really (as long as no heavy snow) as I prefer running in winter. Pace really quickens.

Wheelybug · 21/09/2011 16:03

Afternoon all !

paws - hope the sinuses get sorted asap and the running gets back on track. I am trying to ignore a slightly sore throat and headache-ness. I've felt like this for a few days so hoping it would have come to something if it was going to. Worried about taking more time out...

The soup sounds lovely...

Welcome bumply - well done on signing up to the 5K ! And you're never too old. As I've oft mentioned on here before, my Mum started running at about 65 - she did her first 5K in July at 67 and is now training up to a 10K. She never ran in her life before and used to hide during cross country.

DrNo - I definitely find it harder running when pre-menstrual and have always known when I'm pregnant (x3) because its felt like I was running through mud.

LOL at Bonkers's knee. I guess that means its almost better !

moshi - glad things are looking a bit more sorted. Just think of the hill training in San Fran !

peach- how are you today ? When I picked dd up today, she'd been through 4 changes of clothes through enthusiastic water play with the painting hand washing bowl . Thankfully at the moment they are finding her hilarious.

fanny - I think you're mean not showing us your photo.

So, a busy morning - 5 miles on the treadmill, followed by my swimmiing lesson. I am Loving the swimming lesson - its so interesting and my front crawl has already improved ! One day, I may even cut through the water in a graceful manner.

Planning tomorrow's activities (am loving my 3 mornings sans children Grin). My intended future plan is a short run but at hte moment trying not to run consecutive days to ensure ankle is sorted. So, if I can get dd2 to nursery with my bike (no bike seat as she refuses) then I might do body conditioning (pilates/yoga/stretching) and then do some chores on my bike.

futurity · 21/09/2011 16:09

I know what you mean about struggling to train over summer holidays..I found I had to treat it like a military operation working out when I was going to fit in various runs when normally I can be quite laid back when they are at school. Thankfully the real longer runs this time round for my half training (10 miles +) occurred once they were back at school but I can't ever imagine me doing an Autumn marathon as I don't think it would work fitting it all in.

Even though I don't relish training through the winter if I got a London place it would be (relatively) easier if the kids were at school for most of that time.

I ache today after my 12 miles yesterday..think it was because I ran it slightly faster than I normally do LSR. I figured I had to step it up a bit or it will be a bit of a shock to the system when I come to do the real thing!

FairyBasslet · 21/09/2011 16:46

Hello all. I've been skulking on this thread for longer than I'd care to admit and have finally decided the time has come to introduce myself. I have dabbled in running on and off for years and have only fairly recently started to find a bit of time to get out a bit more regularly. I am the slowest runner on earth pretty much but I love it and I know with a bit of work I'll get a bit faster. Time is my main issue - I have three children aged almost 3 to 8 and DH works fairly solidly when he's at home and is often away a few nights a week. Now that I work with DH at home running our company, I can normally manage to sneak out during the days DD2 is at nursery (when I'm supposed to be working).

I have a question for all you experienced runners. I would really like to do a half marathon on 2nd October but my problem is training has been fairly sporadic since early August, due to holidays, school holidays, DD2 being off nursery with cold last week, DH being away a lot, you get the drift...

I got up to 10 miles and have done that a couple of times, most recently a couple of weeks ago - ran the whole way, felt reasonably comfortable. I had intended to do somewhere in the region of 11-13 miles today to give me the confidence to sign up but found myself struggling right from the off. By 3 miles I was walking. Cut it short in the end and managed a pitiful 4.6miles. I'm just shaking off the tail end of a cold (courtesy of DD2!) so I'm sure that didn't help.

What do you think? Should I sign up or am I being crazy to think I can do it with such poor preparation? I'm not trying to set the world on fire - a couple of weeks ago I'd have been aiming for sub 2:30 but now I'd just be looking to get round and not come last.

Sorry for the essay - all advice very welcome.

fannybanjo · 21/09/2011 17:02

Welcome Fairy! I too lurked on and off for a while! Well done on your running with 3 kids, DH away etc - I know myself how hard it can be and my DH doesn't go away for work. You have 3 similar to me, my youngest is 3 in Feb and DD1 is 8. Re your training - forget about today's mishap - I have them all the time. In fact i did 14 miles the day after i had to cut short a 3 miler because my legs wouldn't move. You will gain a psychological edge if you do nearer the 13 miles BUT doing 10 is a good base to do a HM and with you not wishing to "race it" you'll do it no problem. I say go for it, the day itself will carry you to the end and if you don't race off too quick there's a great chance you'll it under the 2hr30 as you're used to doing a good distance. There are people who have completed HM with a lot less training. When's the next chance you'd get to do a long run again?

backwardpossom · 21/09/2011 17:21

Fairy - I'd say go for it. I never got past 11.5 miles in my training for the half marathon I did, and I managed it well in within the time I was aiming for. Welcome to the thread :)

peachsmuggler · 21/09/2011 17:30

Much better today Wheely, and thanks for all the unmumsnetty hugs everyone. Had a bit of a cry when I went to bed last night and a good sleep, and of course felt much better today. Glad the swimming lessons are going well, am so useless at swimming. Glad your DD got through 4 changes of clothes having water fun, I though you were going to say she'd wee'd herself!! Ha ha

Your DP is veggie eh Rhet? quorn chilli is a atape in our house too!

Fanny, sorry DD3 is still upset at pre-school. Did you say she was returning, not starting? Is it just when you drop her off or does it manifest itself even when she's nit there?

Euuuuwwwww to scabby sex, Bonkers. DS must NEVER find out!!! Smile

Paws, a three pronged attack of steaming, soup scoffing, and sudafed should do the trick. Good luck!

Moshi, brilliant that you have child care in place for next week. If you want some serious hill training head to Chinatown. Does of the gradients there will take your breath away. Literally!!! Have a chocolate ice cream sundae, or three!, for me at Guirardelli's!!!

Welcome fairy, I think you'll be fine. I agree it is great to get nearer the distance in training for your confidence and your legs, but I did a half, having only done one 10 miler and managed a sub 2.30. Good luck!

Can't remember who was asking (Rhet?), our 32 week scan is standard now at our hospital so we are very lucky. Had scans coming out my arse with DD what with early bleeding and later concerns about growth, so it is nice to get this later one with this baby. Feel much less stressed about this one compared to terrifying 12 and 20 week ones, as guess they have checked all the scary stuff (anomolies etc) and this one checks placenta, baby growth, and cervix length. Hope that doesn't sound like am resting on my laurels or being blasé, but I genuinely don't feel so scared about this scan. We are taking DD as is too early to drop her at playgroup first.
