I?m loving the GNR reports. I watched it on TV and decided that I will do it one day. Well done to everyone who participated, I can?t believe how long it took some folks to even reach the start line. Cracking performances from the elite athletes as well.

I am out at the moment with what I think must be shin splints. Started during my run on Friday and I have been resting it ever since. Unfortunately I have a 10k mud run booked in October so I hope its ok by then. Has anyone else ever had this?

sfxmum · 20/09/2011 10:38

welcome bumply

Peach sorry read it now, sounds like a nice evening

tulip27 · 20/09/2011 11:03

Hi Pinkglow- I normally find a couple of paracetamol before your run and shin splints don't remain a problem. Without the paracetamol the pain normally fades at about mile 3. Just remember to shower not bath after your runs as a bath increases the blood supply to the splints and can inflame them further. Ice and brufen for the anti inflammatory effect post run is good.
Alternatives to keep you going is cycling- I love spinning- works all the same muscles without any of the injury.

Moshi- Wow, sounds like an amazing opportunity, I think you should definatly explore it. Diversisty and change in life is just as enriching as staying at one good school. Creates a well rounded person I think. As for the HM, have been training hard for the last 6 months now, am permantly exhausted from all this exercising, however I have put my estimated time down as 2 1/2 hours but hope I will be nearer 2. As its my first half will just be glad to get through it. Am sooooooo excited.

DrNortherner · 20/09/2011 11:09

orange that is so tragic about your bro and his wife Sad Must be an extremley difficult time for everyone involved. Huge sympathies to you all.

sticky I would love to do Richmond 10k, but, our Sundays are taken over by ds's football as all the matches are o Sunday and dh is a coach he needs the car to get equipment and kids to the game and as we only have 1 car I am transportless and can not get there......pesky football. If I can convince a mate I might be able to do it. Will keep you posted. And to all you Southerners who thought we were talking about Richmond Park, there is life outside of the M25 doncha know, it's not all about London Grin

moshi am sure you hav lots going on at teh mo, come and tell us all about is soon!

Off to running club tonight, coach has emailed saying we are doing our first tough hill session of the season tonight. I am strangely excited

DrNortherner · 20/09/2011 11:16

Meant to say my leg niggle is still hanging around, and I have tracked it down to teh afct that wearing heels at work makes it worse. I supposed I should wear flats, but frankly, that is against my religion whn in the office...

futurity · 20/09/2011 11:52

Wish I had sunny Autumn morning..it's cloudy and windy here so I worked out a LSR with the wind behind me for all but the last 3 miles Smile cheating a bit I feel as I should just get on with it whatever the wind direction but I figure why make it hard for myself ! Anyway, did 12.3 miles in 2 hours 14 min (would love this to be my time for the half but can't quite imagine how I can pull that out of the bag on the day!?).

MoshiMoshi · 20/09/2011 11:53

I think the mark of a true dedicated runner is whether she wears heels or not anymore, DrNo.... Wink

Am still here and not on a plane to SF as you can see.

MoshiMoshi · 20/09/2011 11:54

PS Welcome newbies!
PPS Good running, futurity! Of course you can pull that time off on the day of your HM. We are programmed to exceed training paces in races. Something to do with the way we evolved from hunter gatherer who must achieve goals or die of starvation according to my current book.

fannybanjo · 20/09/2011 12:02

Hahahahahahaha I've just found myself on the GNR photos - they didn't link me to them as bib was covered but I've searched through them. All I'll say is thank god I can't enlarge them.... Before you all ask, there's more chance plaiting fog than me linking to them. Grin

Moshi come on then, tell us..... Grin

futurity · 20/09/2011 12:07

Hmmm...don't think there is a danger of me dying of starvation in Peterborough Wink but I know what you mean..we can run faster than training pace when it comes to the day..it's just during training it seems so unlikely!

So how come you are not wizzing to SF?

MoshiMoshi · 20/09/2011 12:09

They are in negotiations over The Package (ie they are being tight arsed).

rhetorician · 20/09/2011 12:16

futurity didn't know that you lived in Peterborough! my grandparents lived there when they retired (my grandad was quite a character and everyone knew him); my parents lived just outside when they were first married...(which was probably before you were born!)

run-commute was bloody ace - really really enjoyed it. Good easy steady running - about 8 miles I think (13k?) in 1h18min, but that includes various bits of loitering at pedestrian crossings (I did stop the watch while the liffey bridge was up as that took about 5 minutes). I can vary the route a bit and will gradually lengthen it out, but my running seems to have turned a small corner and easy is genuinely easy. Just realised that was 10min/m! Easy pace! for me! Struggled with the last but one km - I ran out of fuel and felt it. Handy to know that I can run for 1 and 10 minutes before needing something.

Interesting --grungy- urban route for the first part, then along the Liffey and finally along the bay. Backpack was good - not perfect, as it is clearly designed for a man as the chest strap is too low down for someone with boobs (I don't think mine are particularly low-hanging Blush) and all the straps are slightly too long even when pulled absolutely tight. But I can live with it - otherwise it's really good, the right size, space for a drink (or hydration bladder, lol), comfy, only mild chafing - in winter this will be fine as I'll probably have a top with a collar on over my running top.

What a great start to the day!!

Pawsnclaws · 20/09/2011 12:36

Rhet your run sounds lovely.

Am going stir crazy at home, coughing and spluttering. Yesterday I thought I might be well enough for a jog round the block, today I feel even worse. I'm meant to be doing 20 on Saturday, if I'm not up to that I'm out of the marathon.

Bought some new running shoes as the old ones have completely worn out the cushioning, but have had to go up half a size - I'm sure they'll be ok though.

encyclogirl · 20/09/2011 12:47

Wow Rhet I am so envious of your ability to run/commute to work! Think how handy that is to 'get your running in' first thing!

Especially with a new baby in the house, you won't have to desert the family to get your running done.

We are in constant negotiations in this house over running and cycling time!

Moshi sorry they are being tight arsed. That's really scanty of them. They expect you to disrupt all your lives and then try to nickle and dime you as soon as they get your buy in. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Peachy You're a woman after me own heart. Both my pregnancies consisted of elasticated pants and snickers bars. It's the only way to go in my book :)

encyclogirl · 20/09/2011 12:51

Four miles booked for tonight. Seeing as I'm on ceiling painting detail later tonight, I feel a bit cheeky trying to fit more in!

futurity · 20/09/2011 12:57

Sounds like a great run Rhet

I don't live in Peterborough..my half marathon is there in a couple of weeks. :)

orangehead · 20/09/2011 12:57

Yeap my bikini days are well and truly over sticky. futurity think thats what did my tummy in had section with ds1, left with horrible overhang. Once asked my gynaecologist about it and he said no amount of excerise or diet will will fix that only a tummy tuck will work Shock. I thought he might of been wrong but years of crunches and pilates now think he is right. Tbh not that bothered about it, I used to be but that down to my ex making me feel crap about it. But dh makes me feel fab and confident despite tummy Grin.
It was pretty flat before dc fanny but not toned. I was one of those cows that I now hate that was a tiny size 8 and ate a junk food and did no excerise. When ds1 was 6 months old I was size 16 Shock. Now 10/12 depending on make. But Im the opposite even at my biggest had small bum, it all goes on my tummy.
ibbydibby he woke with a night terror and screming at 5, scared the live out of me. But he settled quicky and fine today. Been playing trains Smile. Can't see things getting better with my parents.
Ouch Pink, ice them lots it really helps. For me it normally a sign I need new trainers.
Welcome Bumply. I would say def do the 5k. Might be woth looking to see if any parrkuns near you.
Glad you back pack was good rhet. It will make easier for you.

backwardpossom · 20/09/2011 12:58

DH is away today so I wont get running tonight. Boo! Car is in for its MOT and I am shitting it. We are a bit skint at the moment (probably because I keep entering bloody races) and have budgeted for the actual MOT and service, but if there's anything wrong, I've got no money to pay for the repairs! Credit card anyone?! Grin Fingers crossed everyone!

Welcome to the thread bumply - it's pretty fast moving, but very supportive :)

orangehead · 20/09/2011 12:59

paws how long have you had it now? Hope you feeling better soon

rhetorician · 20/09/2011 13:14

forgot to say, hello and welcome to bumply

OP posts:
Pawsnclaws · 20/09/2011 13:40

orange started with tickly cough and sore throat last Thursday, and progressed quickly to a chesty cough, achy glands and temperature over the weekend. I felt a bit better yesterday but today am breathless and really tired. I blame the boys for bringing it home from school!

Moshi, they will come round. It costs to uproot six people half way round the world. If your DH has the skills and experience they need they'll find The Right Package.

DebiTheScot · 20/09/2011 13:49

orange your poor dn. I feel so sad for him and I don't even know him so can't begin to imagine what you're all going through. And it must be so much harder for everyone when you can't talk about it as no one knows.
I know exactly how you feel about your tummy. Mine is exactly the same. I'm also a size 10-12 (sometimes even an 8) and since losing about a stone last year and toning up I think my tummy looks worse as it hasn't got smaller or toned.
moshi what a dilemma! I'm not sure I'd like to be faced with that one. An amazing opportunity but also quite scary and an organisational nightmare I'd imagine. Taking just the little one out for the pre-visit could be a good option if you don't want to leave her. Taking the older ones is probably a bad idea as you'd have too much to do with the 4 of them and also they might get really excited and be gutted if you didn't go in the end.

pink I had what I think was the start of shin splints back in June and rested for about 2 weeks. I then did 1 or 2 short runs and a 10k race and I got a pb! Also I bought new shoes and haven't felt any twinges since.

bumply welcome and yes do the 5k. I second finding a Parkrun too. There is one in Edinburgh. Check out the website if you haven't heard about it. It's really good.

I went out last night to do some 'sprints' for the first time in months. I need to find the 10k plan that one of you emailed me a while ago to get some ideas of what to do. I ran about 0.75 miles then did 6 lots of 320m (0.2 mile) with 160m (0.1 mile) walk/jog recovery then a mile home again. Is that the right sort of thing to do? It was very hard work so I huess it must be good for me.
Should I do that sort of thing once a week? Will try and get a couple more in before the 10k on the 2nd.

I have a dilemma too (not as severe as Moshi's though!). I've been asked to do the Sunday part of the Rat Race in London on Sunday see here and click on red spots to see some of the things in it and don't know whether I should do it. Someone dropped out of a team and they 'need' me! It looks amazing and so much fun but I feel bad at leaving dh with the boys again. There was the cycle race at the zoo (although we did all go to the zoo after it), the 10k in 2 weeks (that's local though so not all day), a school trip to Belguim for the day and the duathlon all in the next month.

Oh and a lady who works with dh is on Eurosport at the moment in the Cycling Road World Championships!

orangehead · 20/09/2011 14:57

How long would be gone debi, it looks good fun. What has you dh said about it. If he ok with having dc then go for it.
Hope you get the right package moshi
I though you had had it longer paws, lost all concept of time on this thread Smile

encyclogirl · 20/09/2011 15:33

Debi that sounds like me. The worst part about running is the guilt I feel in doing something for myself. No matter how often I tell myself that the whole family will benefit, that it's a great legacy for the kids, that I need it for my sanity, I still feel guilty.

But if they need you....

Get well soon Paws

cestlavie · 20/09/2011 16:14

Sorry to hear about DN orange - poor you. Sounds like you're being a star and helping out as much as you can.

Fanny, yes, sub 1.45 HM should definitely be achievable. Just need a nice flat route rather than recent hilly courses! Might go for Brighton early next year with a friend.

Lucky you peaches - thanks a lot for the e-mail - didn't get out of work in time to go to the Caballo Blanco talk. Sounds like it was brilliant. What were the other people who went like? All ultra-runner types?

Sounds like you're struggling a bit paws. Hope you recover soon. Am (hopefully) moving up your way to Harpenden very soon! Am definitely looking forward to lots more countryside running.

Good luck on your DH getting the right deal Moshi
