orange so sorry to her about DB. Life is so cruel. Your DN is the exact same age as DD2 and the thought of her going through such turmoil at such a young age is heartbreaking. What a lovely family you are, all sticking together and helping your DB and his family.

orangehead · 19/09/2011 22:20

Thankyou everyone. Just checked on him and he fast to sleep.
On another note (trying not to be negatve) the photos of my 10k are finally on the website and my tummy looks really huge on the photos Blush. I have toned up everywhere since starting running but my tummy flab is as strong as ever. How do people manage to have flat tummies after children? It's a good job they are worth it Grin

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 22:26

orange - can we see your photos please? Smile I bet your tummy is nowhere near as huge as you think! We tend to spot what we worry about the most but when others are asked they don't see them. We can reassure you if you show us the link!

Pawsnclaws · 19/09/2011 22:29

Sorry orange. That's incredibly tough for all of you.

orangehead · 19/09/2011 22:36

Think I have put too much personal stuff on mumsnet to put a photo on. I already worrying my db might read this thread and be annoyed. Only immediate family know he ill, to everyone else I have to pretend everything ok as he wants no one to know. How silly am I, of course he is not going to read a running thread on mumsnet.

encyclogirl · 19/09/2011 22:37

Orange that is so tragic for your family, my goodness the crap I complain about sometimes, makes me ashamed. You are amazing for caring for your dn, your db must be so relieved to have you.

Oh ya, my tummy is sooooooo not toned. I dunno how many miles I'd have to run to achieve that!!

Moshi San Fran, how fantastic. Scary decision tho' We left London 13 years ago, it was a very difficult decision but the best one we ever made, for our family anyway.

sticky my island is the greatest crap gatherer in the history of crap gatherers. My dh piles the whole world on that thing. I'm hoping a shiny new one (that he had to build himself) might stop this perching of shit all over the damn thing, probably a vain hope Grin

squix · 19/09/2011 22:46

orange - so sorry to hear about your db and dn, hope you all manage to find some peace amongst all the turmoil.

stickylittlefingers · 20/09/2011 01:19

Orange that's an awful lot for anyone to cope with. I surely wouldn't worry about this thread being read (even we who post on it all the time have trouble keeping up). I hope the running helps you keep it all together. You're amazing.

On the subject that I actually know something about - my goodness woman, I don't know how all these Other Women manage to have washboard stomachs after childbirth. I'm guessing a lot of hard work! After DD2 it all went badly wrong in my stomach department, so I deal with it by never going near a bikini and otherwise not minding - just like Laurence of Arabia... :)

stickylittlefingers · 20/09/2011 01:23

DrNo October 16th... and yes, it is a really hilly course. Not a PB route! But very scenic, and finishing in Richmond castle is great (though the cobbles are not). There is a real ale festival afterwards...:)

website The closing date for entries is soon, so we're just sorting out logistics and should be entering tomorrow.

CoteDAzur · 20/09/2011 07:09

Sad for your DB & family.

Your DNs ares lucky to have you, though. It might not feel like it now, but I'm sure they draw comfort and strength from you.

futurity · 20/09/2011 07:22

Sad for you, your DB and family.

futurity · 20/09/2011 07:24

On the tummy front..never ever been toned here and now destroyed by having 2 c-sections so all sort of weird wobbly as well as covered in stretch marks!

rhetorician · 20/09/2011 08:51

have just realised that dr No and sticky are talking about Richmond, Yorks, not Richmond London (was trying to think where there could possibly be big hills Hmm)

running to work this morning via the long route...with my new backpack. Will let you know how it goes. Going to get some porridge in first though :)

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 20/09/2011 09:16

I too thought it was Richmond, London! Sounds great although can imagine tough route if weather bad.

rhet good luck with backpack run.

sticky how you feeling today? I was exhausted last night, had bowl of beef stew (Scouse to us Scousers!) then was asleep early. I'm usually up at 6 but struggled to get up yesterday and today. Will go for run tomorrow - when you putting your trainers back on? I still have a little lump in my throat when I think of Sunday. Blush. Truly one of the most memorable days of my life (bar birth of DDs and wedding of course Wink) - can't wait to sign up for next 3 years. Hope your washing machine sorted - my kit walked home on it's own....

Moshi hope you got sorted - look forward to hearing all about it.

Orange I bet your stomach is nowhere near as bad as you think it is, I think after kids we are awfully critical of ourselves. Was your stomach flat pre-children? I'll be honest, my top half and tummy not a problem for me however I really have to watch my legs and bum as weight goes straight on them. We all have our problem bits. Hope your DB is comfortable.

peach put your feet up and enjoy last few weeks before 1 becomes 2. I didn't find going from 1 to 2 too bad however 2 to 3.... Hmm

ibbydibby · 20/09/2011 09:32

Orange, hope DN slept well last night. I am so sad about your situation, and worried too...your DSIL at some point will need to tell her employer of the situation, won't she? I think you said in previous thread a couple of weeks ago the your DB had fallen out with your parents (apologies if I am wrong here) - is there any chance of improving relations there?

Moshi what an opportunity! If you go, how great to give "moving to SF" as a reason for standing down as class rep. (I am chair of our Friends Assn, and standing down both as chair and as committee member in a couple of weeks, would love to just say am moving somewhere far away, rather than just state that I have had enough!)

Used my Garmin for first time last night - great! It is so much more straightforward than the one I won in 2007 (and sold to another runner). BUT I have a question. I have geekily tried to upload last night's session on the computer. Have got the software installed but how do you actually extract the data from the watch? Hmmm

Bumply · 20/09/2011 09:41

Hello,
Can I join in?
I've been going to the gym fir a fewontgs, but tried running recently and found I can do 5 km in just over 40 mins on the flat or ~45 mins up and down hills.
I've signed up for the big fun run round arthurs seat on 23 rd oct which is handy for me as that's where I run at the moment.
Can't decide whether to do the bupa 5 km on 2 nd which is in the centre of Edinburgh. Some more experienced colleagues at work are doing the 10 km.

sfxmum · 20/09/2011 09:51

hello all

just quickly to update the congratulations on the weekends's PB
for sticky runforfun possum well done!

cest&peach did you make it to the talk?

encyclo hope the settling in continues well

moshi I hope you sorted out the domestic situation and are on your way to have a look at the possible/likely future, I am sure daunting and exciting in equal measure. I can understand how you are having a wobble regarding school but I am sure there will be equally good one with great opportunities

orange you sound like a very private person and a lot of the feelings surrounding what is happening seem rather painful and complicated, I hope you all manage to find some peace and harmony coming to terms with the inevitable and that there is plenty of love and support for the little one particularly, best wishes to you all

I did realise it was not Surrey but Yorkshire, the hills at Richmond Park are though for southern softies only Grin

Here I am dealing the prosaic challenges of the college changing my course at the last minute and a broken down washing machine, needs replacing and really it could have happened at a better time but hey ho

happy running all, I expect to go out once have sorted a few things around the place.

stickylittlefingers · 20/09/2011 09:54

hee hee - complaining about the hills in Richmond London would be a bit Hmm! Even more confusingly there is also a Richmond 10k there, which comes up first if you google Richmond 10k. Have to ensure I enter the right race...

Fanny am toying with the idea of a little slow run today - it's just so gorgeous here today it seems a pity to waste it. Proper sunny crisp autumn day... my thighs are still a bit achey but maybe a run would do them good, stretch them out a bit. How about you? Scouse sounds good! The local delicacy over here of pie and mash is particularly good post race fodder (sod all that healing salmon - I want beef gravy!!). Quite happy to go native on that one!

rhet will be interested to hear how the backpack run goes - I see some multitasking opportunities there if it works...

stickylittlefingers · 20/09/2011 09:57

sfxmum is there something going round for washing machines? What a pain... but glad to report ours is back in action. Thermostat apparently (not sure why that causes a flood, but it's working now so I'm not arguing). Hope yours finds its second/hundredth wind and gets going again.

sfxmum · 20/09/2011 10:01

I am doing that one on the 22nd (expect they will makes go up the hillShock ) Grin

rhetorician · 20/09/2011 10:01

absolutely gorgeous day here, too sticky

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 20/09/2011 10:04

Bumply sorry didn't see you there! Round Arthur's seat sounds like a nice route. There was a flyer for the Edinburgh marathon and half in the GNR goody bag on sunday. I must admit I'm tempted, I love Edinburgh so it would great to have a run around it!

I'd say definitely go for the 5k and see how you go with it. There are so many races around to enter, there's no pressure and you can build up slowly - both your fitness and your confidence.

And welcome (warning - this thread is very chatty...:))

encyclogirl · 20/09/2011 10:08

Welcome Bumply!

peachsmuggler · 20/09/2011 10:28

Welcome bumply, good to have you here. Defo sign up for the Bupa 5k. You can do the distance so would be great to get the race experience!

Rhet, looking forward to the backpack review!

DrNo, I agree with the others. I'd be miffed to tbh, but use it to hone your competative steely edge and whoop her ass next time!!!

Orange, hope you all and your DN got a good night's sleep. As to tummies. Well! Mine wasn't great after DD1 but then it wasn't that great before. God knows what it will be like after this one! But we are far too hard on ourselves ladies. Loads of men our age have pot bellies through nothing more than overeating/drinking and lack of exercise and think nothing of it, whereas we have had babies and are out there killing ourselves on the pavement/treadmil/swimming pool and still feelng bad about wobbly bits! We should cut ourselves some slack.

Speaking of overeating, we were visiting friends at the weekend and DP was asking our friend, who is 4 weeks behind me pregnancy wise, if she had any cravings. She said mainly green lentils and yoghurt. I was sitting there trying to calculate the litres of coke/bags of kettle chips I have eaten in the last few months Blush

Fanny, great to see your post GNR runner's high shows no sign of abating! Am putting my feet up right now as we speak! Dropped DD off at playgroup (crying...) and am attached to sofa. Was awake for about 3 hours during night, so knackered today.

sfx, yes I did, see post at 21.59 last night for details! No sign of Cest, but then, how would I know!

peachsmuggler · 20/09/2011 10:34

Sticky, oh yes, a wee 2 or 3 miles would be a good idea, loosen the old legs. Especially as your weather sounds beautiful. Very grey here in South London.
