Well done N4NNY - Sounds like a horrendous race and also very fast if you were last. You should be v. proud of yourself.

Well done too on your long run June

Glad you're feeling a bit better rhet

5 miles on the treadmill this morning. Sort of tempo run and managed to keep faster speed up for an extra KM.

2 days off now as can't get into the gym or out until Thurs.

EmmaBemma · 08/08/2011 17:07

Hello everyone!

That sounds like an ordeal N4NNY - well done for getting through it! I think laps must be really mentally tough on a long race - the knowledge of what you've got to do again, and again.

Glad you're on the mend, rhet. Incidentally, I think I need a link to your race report for the Infamous Half-Marathon Of Indefinite Duration - every time you mention it I am intrigued!

That sounds a very fun run with your daughter, Sonic. My 4 year old loves running too, though she hasn't been out on a jog with me yet. She's still at the stage where she can't stop looking at her feet whirring along. Also she was genuinely gutted when she didn't win her playgroup race at sports day - she is v. competitive like me.

My podiatrist appt on Saturday was interesting. My left leg is 2cm longer than my right. My foot on the left side couldn't be flatter - it collapses completely inwards with every step, hence the shin splint. The foot on my shorter leg acts as a sort of stabiliser. It hits the ground with more force and also twists outwards slightly with each heelstrike - hence the bursitis. No wonder I've been injuring myself! It's a wonder I can even walk in a straight line, never mind run.

She did some massage on my shin splint (ow). I'm not to run for three weeks, but have some stretching exercises to do for my calf muscles. Then she's going to fit me with some temporary insoles and after that, I think, something more permanent.

Meanwhile I've been cycling (but it's just not the same) and have joined my local council gym, to try to maintain my fitness. I keep thinking "surely a few laps on grass round the common would be OK?" but I know really that's crazy talk!

rhetorician · 08/08/2011 21:00

Emma I can't find it! no running today, full on day from 8.30-7.30, got home to discover that poor DP had had some kind of bug and had to get her mum over - not that I could have left to come, but still feel bad. Think DD watched a lot of tv (not that she will mind!). Am shattered as DD was awake in the night as well (how do they know that you have something important to do next day? why does she always wake up on a Sunday night? and other mysteries of infants); but still planning on running tomorrow - very slowly, probably!

It's good to know that there's a reason that you are getting hurt, and that it can be fixed - there'll be no stopping you. That's quite a disproportion - it will affect everything about your running as you must be tilting your pelvis to compensate too. Wow

MoshiMoshi · 08/08/2011 22:31

Hello all! Had a great few days in Ibiza sandwiched by horrid flights courtesy of Ryanair. Now in the New Forest for the next couple of weeks so only on my iPhone. Apologies therefore for not mentioning any of you. I am just so appalled at what is going on in London. It's not really to do with the police shooting now but seems to me to be more of a venting of frustration by certain social groups (hence the areas being rioted in) brought on by the economic situation.

So pleased this thread has turned into a supportive encouraging place for running mums. I always wondered why there wasn't a running specific thread and am delighted that we have continued it what seems like permanently now! Smile

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 09/08/2011 13:34

Hi all,
I have sporadically posted here, but not recently. To be honest, I think you all put me to shame with my (not so long) runs!

I went for a run at lunchtime and beforehand was feeling really strung out by life before I went due to a) discovering DS has a peanut allergy over the weekend (albeit with a mild reaction, but still he is my PFB and it wasn't nice) and b) DP is in the Met and spent all of Sunday night chasing scummy rioters and looks like he is doing so again tonight.

However half an hour sweaty jogging and some power tunes later, and I am back, brimming with endorphins to get me through the afternoon.

Hurrah for running!

rhetorician · 09/08/2011 14:14

hi wishIwasCherry that sounds like double stress - poor you. It's just a nightmare what's going on - but the public are right beyond people like your DP.

You are running, that's all that matters. I am still recovering from nasty bug and think I won't run until tomorrow. Have my race number for the 10 mile...I'll just plod round and not expect anything time-wise - it'll be fine. No point in making running into yet another obligation that I struggle to fulfil...

hope everyone is OK, especially the Londoners (I am with you in spirit - hate to see this happening in the city I love so much; but it's not the first time and won't be the last - the fantastic spirit of London will win out I'm sure)

Quenelle · 09/08/2011 14:23

Hi all. I have trouble keeping up with you all (in more ways than one Smile) so my posting is quite sporadic too.

Emma thanks for your sympathy, I was gutted at the time, especially because DH ran so I had to watch from the sidelines instead of participating.

Sounds like you had a good appt with your podiatrist. It's good to know what's causing your problems, and to have a plan to fix it.

Sonic I'm impressed with your DD's running. You're never too young to start are you? I hope DD2 is getting better.

rhet sorry you've been ill. Hope it hasn't set your training back too much.

Hi Moshi Hope you're having a good holiday. The news of the riots is so depressing isn't it?

Cherry sounds like you have had a worrying weekend. I hope your DP is ok tonight.

I had a much better run this lunchtime, the sun was out and I didn't make any wrong turns, unlike last week. The second half was all uphill though so no chance of a negative split for me.

I didn't get to do parkrun on Saturday due to a last minute camping trip but I'm definitely doing it this weekend. And I should get out Thursday lunchtime too, I'm hoping to push myself to 35 minutes+ this week, need to get my mileage up if I'm going to manage 10k in October.

sfxmum · 09/08/2011 14:35

wishIwas hope your DP keeps safe tonight
and that once the early upset at your ds's allergy is settled things will feel better - running now matter how sporadic is always helpful

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 09/08/2011 14:59

Thank you for your kind messages. I think DP will be ok - he is very tough but sensible. I might crack out the baking ingredients this evening and make some cakes for him to take into work tomorrow - all these police love a bit of cake... although not sure when he will be back to pick them up??

IlanaK · 09/08/2011 17:42

So are you londoners running in the evening? I was going to go running tonight (NW London) but everyone is saying not to. I just run on residential roads but I live very near a tube station and high street. Any thoughts?

rhetorician · 09/08/2011 18:04

IlanaK no idea what kind of area you live in, but I'd say just make sure that you can get home in double quick time if you need to and avoid shops with electrical goods in them!

IlanaK · 09/08/2011 18:10

I live in a mixed area but run mostly on leafy residential roads. No electrical shops in sight! Perhaps I will run faster with the threat of rioting?!

Wheelybug · 09/08/2011 18:12

cherry - Hope your DP's shift goes ok !

Ilana - I think it probably depends where you are in NW London. I am in London but in the 'burbs and think it would be fine but then I know the larger shopping areas round here (Putney Wimbledon) have been shut up since mid-pm. I suppose if you did have to geet away from trouble it would count as speed training Wink.

No running here today but had 5 children here most of the day which has beena lot more work than a run I think Grin. Were supposedto be staying until tea but I had to drive 2 of them back to another area so we decided it would be wise to cut things short and everyone home safely just in case.

IlanaK · 09/08/2011 21:20

Well i braved the riots and went running. No sign of any trouble anywhere. Worst run ever though. I normally run 5 km and last run I started sprint intervals. I gave up today after only 2.5 km and only 4 sprints. I was just so exhausted. I feel a bit deflated. I think I know the reason though. I started swimming and aqua aerobics this past week. And I pushed hard doing it. So I think I may just be over doing the exercise. Is this likely?

MrsWednesday · 09/08/2011 21:32

Hello running ladies new and old, long time no speak. I have been off the running for a few weeks after advice from my physio - when I fell of my bike a few months ago I really damaged my right thigh muscle and the weakness has caused a problem in my knee. Gradually working my way back into it, but I'm only doing repeats of 4 minutes running and 1 minute walking for about 2-3 miles so it's frustrating. And I'm still eating like I'm training for a marathon...

Hope everyone is ok and staying away from all of the trouble. Leeds was full of police tonight but I think that was mainly because of the football (Leeds v Bradford, bad day for an incendiary local derby!)

Will go back through the thread now and try and catch up a bit, have been following you on FB and some of the distances are really impressive (am jealous!)

futurity · 09/08/2011 21:41

Quick marking my place from holiday post. Have not done any running but lots of walking in the Peaks so don't feel too twitchy at lack of running (although eating too much food!).

I do find myself looking at the gorgeous rolling hills (we were at Mam Tor today) and fantasising about owning running spikes and trotting up and down hills! And don't get me started on the amount of cyclists we saw...so jealous!

peachsmuggler · 09/08/2011 22:35

Heyyyyy MrsWeds, good to hear from you, glad you are able to get some running going!

Cherry, hope all well with your DH tonight.

Just getting round to saying congratulations to N4NNY on your 10k, sounds like you did a great job in difficult conditions. I, for one, despise lapped races. Just so difficult to deal with mentally.

Your holiday sounds lovely Futurity. I must say the idea of getting out of London just now is very appealing!

House move went fine. Kind of hideous, but ultimately not too bad. Feels weird in new place, I like it but it doesn't feel like home yet iyswim. DD has totally regressed in potty training and is pissing like a new puppy, all over the flipping place. It is quite exhausting and today she wasn't feeling too well with a temp so we just stayed home and I found a 101 places to store cardboard boxes.

peachsmuggler · 09/08/2011 22:39

Oh and may I recommend to you all Caitlin Moran's "How to be a Woman". Nit a running book admittedly, but very very funny.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 09/08/2011 22:52

Hello all! Got out for a run tonight. 4.25miles and done it in 39mins and it felt ok. I've have a sore ankle though, which I inherited from my last run so I made sure to give it time to rest and haven't been out since last Thursday. It was fine while running but not so good when I got back. Not sure what that's all about. Confused

Oh no mrs weds and emma. Hope you're both injury free soon.

quenelle was it you who suggested Bedford parkrun to me? Unfortunately, although it is about the same distance, MK is quicker to get to. If I can get my arse out of bed at that time on a sunday, (and not be such a scaredy cat!) I might go. Glad you're enjoying it.

Sorry for not name-checking anyone else, posting this on my phone so it's tricky seeing previous posts! Hope everyone else is well. Oh and rhet hope you're feeling better.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 09/08/2011 22:58

Took so long to type that, I didn't see your post peach Glad the move went well. I found that until I couldn't smell the house when I walked into it, it didn't feel like home. Does that make sense, or just make me sound a bit odd?! You don't notice your own smell, so when it smells of nothing, you know you've settled in. I'll stop now...

Hope your DD is back on form soon.

squix · 09/08/2011 23:12

Just popping on for a quick 'hello' before I pop off to sunnier places - not sure how much running I'll do but my trainers are in my case. I expect when I get back you'll be half way through a new thread.

Happy running everyone Grin

peachsmuggler · 10/08/2011 07:17

Ha ha badger, it's funny cos I never really thought about smells oh houses but DP has a very sensitive nose (think he may be part bloodhound....) and he was going on about the smell of "other people's houses!

Go on, do the parkrun, I bet you'd love it!!!

Have a great holiday squix. at least you have the option with your shoes packed, see how you go!

SonicMiddleAge · 10/08/2011 08:44

Am loving hearing everyone?s stories of running children. The next comment sound so deeply self satisfied, that it probably comes across as nauseating, but I think that one of the best things about as an adult regularly being seen to do sport is it creates a good healthy mindset for your kids, and an expectation that exercise, not silly eating is the way to control your figure and maintain your health (with the minor, to be ignored contradiction in our household that it will however completely trash your knees?)

YeahThatsTheBadger · 10/08/2011 09:13

Sonic-not self satisfied at all. Something that we enjoy doing is helping dc's to have a healthy attitude toward food and exercise before other more negative suggestions get instilled into them.
DS is 4 and we went to the park the other day. He asked if we could do some practicing for his run! (He's doing a 1k run when I'm doing the 10k.)

Right off to the library. I know how to show my dc a good time. Grin Although I did ask what they wanted to do and this was their suggestion. Hooray for books!

Quenelle · 10/08/2011 09:18

Hi all.

Yes Badger that was me. I did it the other Saturday and will be doing it this weekend. I think the MK one is round Willen Lake so probably more picturesque than Bedford, which is a traditional Victorian town-style park. I was surprised actually that it was possible to park at the entrance, I expected it to be busier. It's great fun wherever though, I highly recommend it. According to the parkrun newsletter Mo Farah turned up at the Bushey one last week and ran it with his wife. I love Mo.

Bon Voyage Squix.

Agree Sonic we will encourage DS to do sport. He's very tall with long, strong legs so I have high hopes of him becoming an athlete. One of our good friends is a rugby coach so he will be pushed in that direction too, I prefer the idea of running-related injuries to rugby-related ones though...

Chris Evans has been extolling the virtues of running on his R2 show this morning. His new sports fella Vassos Alexander is a very keen runner. The pavements will be packed soon at this rate.
