driving - I have a spare bike mount somewhere unopened I think if you are interested in it? Also, keep at the cycling if you are interested as it will certainly help maintain your CV fitness while you are not running. I don't think it can improve your running, something about specificity in training, but maintaining it doing something you enjoy which stresses your body less isn't such a bad thing!

thecoo · 14/07/2011 09:07

cest that was a really interesting article. I've been obsessing over my footstrike too, as I tend to land more on my heel, but have wondered whether trying to adjust my natural style was the cause of the achilles problems I had recently... BTW any news on the househunting?

I think my 2 gentle runs on Sunday and Monday with local mums (was a fair bit of walking involved) did me good, as yesterday I ran 3 miles much faster than I have since starting again after my injury (a minute and a half faster!) I can't seem to let myself walk when I'm on my own, but when with others it's ok...

Running 4.5 miles tomorrow with another friend, so will see how that goes and if any improvement.

EmmaBemma · 14/07/2011 10:10

Hello runners. I'm sure you've all been on tenterhooks about the results of my physiotherapy appointment this morning, so I won't leave you in suspense any longer...! It's bursitis, probably because of overdoing it a bit and also due to having a baby.

He did some manipulations to correct a mild hip misalignment, I'm getting a cortisone injection next week, and I also have some strengthening exercises to do every day with some sort of rubber band and cuffs attached to my ankles. And, best of all, I can keep running and should still be on track for the half marathon, hurrah! I've been really down about it - I felt I was just getting into my stride with the running, and apart from my gammy hip I've been feeling really good: fit and strong, so I was sad to think I might have to give it up.

Re: feet - I tried running on my forefeet once because I'd read an article telling me to, but it felt a bit wrong... though I assumed that you naturally strike towards the front of your foot as you speed up? I think I've got a midfoot strike.

oh, lolol at Moshi's 'easy' pace!

ibbydibby I've got a Garmin 110, which I really like. It's on the basic side though and doesn't do pace alarms or intervals. But, it looks and feels like a normal watch - the 205 seemed massive to me!

futurity · 14/07/2011 10:24

I ordered this one:

www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Bike-Mount-Forerunner-405/dp/B000VK5BMQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310635301&sr=8-1

which is for the 405 but one of the reviewers said it is fine for the 305. It is a bit pricey for what it is but I only got it as I had some money left over for my birthday in the form of an Amazon voucher.

MoshiMoshi · 14/07/2011 12:00

A leisurely 12.01M at an average pace of 7:55m/m on the Alter G Trainer today. Added more body weight with a view to dropping one of the two weekly sessions I do on it. The idea is to keep the LSR on the trainer for a little while and build in more time outdoors gradually in a bid to stave off the injuries.

Super news Emma! Diagnoses aren't always so definitive but to have been told you can do your HM is great news.

cest - I am a forefoot/midfoot striker which seems to help with my stride and may explain why I find running faster relatively easy. None of that heelstriking to halt my forward momentum. It does make for tight calves though.

Themasterandmargaritas · 14/07/2011 15:52

Hooray Emma that is good news. I also had a dodgy hip round October for about 6 months, I kept running and changed my shoes and also did some strengthening leg exercises and haven't had a problem for the last couple of months.

Recently I've been trying to run more on the forefoot, especially after reading Born to Run where they suggested we should all try to emulate the way children run, footfall beneath you and kicking up legs at the back, whilst keeping your back straight. Apparently it's more natural. I was also quite taken with the idea of barefoot running....

Happy Birthday wheely Smile

Maximising the fact once again, that I am in Kenya I have been persuaded to take part in this I am slightly more concerned by the wildlife element to this as it's much more densely populated by lions than the last place. Shock

Hi Drivingmisscrazy - good luck on the Phoenix Park run! I have happy memories of ambling round on the lawyers' run many moons ago. I loved the great expanse of wildness so close to the city... but not so wild as to include lions (yikes!!)...

Emma - really good news that you can keep running. I think it makes an enormous difference to pregnancy and delivery when you feel more generally good about your physical state and it keeps your head in the right place too (ime, anyway!!)

Anyway, should also add myself to the list... I wonder what the accumulated mileage is?

ibbydibby · 14/07/2011 17:56

Good luck for your 5 miler, drving good thing you have this list to remind you...I am toying with doing a 5 mile race tomorrow evening though have not signed up yet. No-one around here to share the transport with, and feels a bit environmentally unfriendly to be driving here, there and everywhere for races (not that I do..). But, my mum lives 30 or so miles away for us, and wants a few odd jobs done, so thinking of going over to hers, then going to race...she is not closer to the race, but I would be able to combine the 2 for less mileage than if I did them separately (if that makes sense..) Will report back tomorrow if I do it.

Thanks for Garmin advice Emma. I suppose I need to know what I want - I think I want something that will tell me distance run, and pace. Do I need anything else? You say it doesn't do pace alarms or intervals....do you wish it did? Eeek feeling very novicey and out of it and...OLD!

drivingmisscrazy · 14/07/2011 18:25

stickylittlefingers - actually, I hear lions and I raise M&M tigers, wolves and penguins - the zoo is also in the park, and about 300m as the crow flies from my house. I have insane fond memories of the wolves howling during DD1's nightfeeds....

I picked these races precisely because they are close to home, hence taking very little time and costing almost no money: I can warm up on my way to the start line, or cycle there. My expectations are fairly low - will be happy to run all the way and get back in about 50 minutes or so. The last mile is all uphill.

bonkers20 · 14/07/2011 19:38

Good luck driving. 5 miles is a nice distance :-)

I just looked up what a Park Run is (I realise that's not what you're doing driving. I can't believe this phenomenom has totally passed me by. My nearest one would be Cambridge. It might be fun. I like that distance, but have only ever done it for RFL which TBH I feel a bit of a berk running as fast as I can as it's meant to be a fun, non-competitive event.

Themasterandmargaritas · 14/07/2011 22:02

Good luck driving I think it is fab you can do a race so close to home.

I confess that even I have done a parkrun. I am thinking of trying to organise the same thing here, with their help. We don't exactly have any parks though, what about a coffee plantation run?

Peakrunner · 14/07/2011 22:04

Good luck with the race driving.

I am doing this curious little race on saturday..

www.fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=1485

futurity · 14/07/2011 22:08

bonkers you must be nearish to me as my nearest parkrun is Cambridge. I've not done it yet but my friend has with a top time of 26mins.

I am very chuffed as at running club tonight I did 6.05 miles in 57.39 minutes! I have never EVER ran that fast for that long. If I had got to 10k it would of been my first sub 1 hour 10kSmile

bonkers20 · 14/07/2011 22:11

Get you futurity! You must be chuffed. I live south 20 miles south of Cambridge. Where are you?

sfxmum · 14/07/2011 22:16

Good luck for the racers this weekend drivingmisscrazy & Pawsnclaws & TheChewyToffeeMum & DebiTheScot

Enjoy Smile

squix · 14/07/2011 22:18

Good luck driving - hope you enjoy your race

futurity well done - great time.

I had a rubbish run this morning - was out early, lovely day but I felt awful - really tired and a bit sick - guess just one of those things. Rest day tomorrow and it's Friday. Smile

futurity · 14/07/2011 22:18

Have PM you Bonkers Smile

Peakrunner · 14/07/2011 22:18

Good luck with the race driving,

I am doing this little fell race on Sat

Trig to Tracks

One mile, down hill, very steep. Entrants estimate their time and ther is a prize for the closest guess. Last year it ran as an uphill and it took me 25 minutes. The winner was a semi-pro mountain biker. Downhill is going to be fun!

Emma I bet you are relieved that the physio said you are ok to run. I was worried last year when I kept getting injured, and everytime I went to the docs they just said rest adn Ibuprofen, so I'd rest and as soon as I got back in to running something else would start to hurt. I was worried I was getting too old for this! finally I got a really painful knee so I went to a physio who diagnosed ITB, and it was all down to pronation, so a change of footwear and the physio told me to get out and run to strengthen the muscles. "run to train and train to run" were his words... !

Peakrunner · 14/07/2011 22:23

oh, forgot to say, recieved "shred" dvd the other day, havent had time to do it, but went spinning today

I have never bought an exercise dvd before. I think I flat mate I had as a student had the Cindy Crawford one but her boyfriend watched it more than we did!

thecoo · 15/07/2011 08:14

futurity and bonkers Cambridge is also my closest park run. Never done it before but maybe we should all go to one sometime and meet up.

Going for a 4.5 mile run this morning with a friend - last time she needed to walk a fair bit but hoping today we can do it all running to give me an idea of my fitness. She has a Garmin so have asked her to bring it so I can check it out :)

robino · 15/07/2011 08:32

Right. Who has stolen my running bra? It's not big and it's not clever...

I only have one at the moment due to 4 yrs of fluctuations caused by pregnancies/ breast feeding/ weight gain/ weight loss. I was already to go out last night. Can I find it anywhere? Grrrrrrrr.

Have not read thread so hope all is ok, will catch up soon!
