Oh moshi, so sorry to hear about your mumSad Don't blame you at all, giving the races a miss. Running can be such a stress reliever though, just maybe use your running to clear your head and give you some space. Cancer is such a horrid disease. I'll be thinking of you all and keeping everything crossed.

I have been on my bike! My knee doesn't really hurt on my bike but I just don't enjoy it the same as runningHmm I did 32 miles, too many hills for my liking but a nice day for it. I have a fancy road bike I got last year but it scares the hell out of meBlush I need to make the effort to get out on it once a week to build my confidence I think. I am almost as slow going down hill as up!

drivingmisscrazy · 06/05/2011 13:42

had to leave car in (brake lights not working) so thought I would take a slow recovery run and pick up DD from nursery. Did a loop - ran faster than I normally do, and relieved to find that I just have a sore bum (glute, I think) and that what I thought was ITB pain is in fact a bruise sustained by walking into the bedpost Blush. So a gentle 6k. Day off tomorrow and then last long run before May 21st.

Moshi I am so sorry to hear about your mum. Like everyone has said it puts other problems and niggles into perspective...

Saw doctor today - she thinks it is my achilles and says I must be very careful so as not to snap it!Shock She has referred me to physio so will make appointment as soon as DH gives me the BUPA details I need. Also going to sort out a longstanding shoulder problem I've had at the same time.

futurity · 06/05/2011 14:42

Sorry to hear about your Mum Moshi Sad...does put all those day to day grumbles that we all have into perspective. thinking of you x

Doyouthinktheysaurus what fancy road bike have you got?? I would love one but I am a bit intimidated by them...I have this beautiful hybrid bike but have always wanted a road bike: www.evanscycles.com/products/raleigh/urban-2-eq-2009-hybrid-bike-ec018966

drivingmisscrazy · 06/05/2011 15:14

futurity nice; I used to have one of these in blue until it became the third beautiful trek bike to be nicked; I'm sticking to my Dawes supergalaxy tourer (in brown); far less appealing to teenage boys Wink

Wheelybug · 06/05/2011 16:01

So sorry to hear your news Moshi. As others have said, I hope you can use your running to keep your head clear. I can't remember where your mum is - is she far away ? She's been through a lot lately.

Interested in the bike chat - my birthday is in July and am definitely asking for a bike this time... although really not sure what to go for though. You kind of need 2 don't you - one for everyday and one for more serious stuff (greedy emoticon).

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 06/05/2011 16:33

futurity it is a specialized dolce elite, lovely bike but scares the hell out of meHmm

It's super light weight and goes too fast down hills!! I have a mountain bike as well but that's a cheapy one that I would like to replace when funds allow.

Glad your injury worries have been allayed driving.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 06/05/2011 16:40

I hope the physio helps thecoo and you aren't out of action too long.

futurity · 06/05/2011 16:40

just googled it Doyouthinktheysaurus...drooooool! its lovely! was it hard getting used to riding it or have you ridden road bikes before?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 06/05/2011 18:01

I'm still trying to get used to it futurityBlush I got it last summer but haven't ridden as much as I would have liked. I'm hoping to get out on it more this year. It is quite different to what I was used to. It's so light and the drop handlebars take a bit of getting used to. I still struggle with indicating and staying upright!!

backwardpossom · 06/05/2011 18:03

Moshi, I'm so so sorry to hear your news about your mum. Thinking of you and your family x

squix - my cousin has replied: "it finishes on the racecourse but they put down plastic stuff, like they do on pitches at concerts so its not actually on the grass." So there you go :)

DrNortherner · 06/05/2011 18:52

Oh Moshi, so sorry to hear the new about your Mum Sad Of course you must be with her, triathalons can wait. Thinking of you all ((hugs)))

squix · 06/05/2011 19:15

Moshi - so sorry to hear about your mum, thinking of you and your family.

backwardpossum - thankyou to you and your cousin - that's a relief, I had visions of having to do a sprint finish (not that that is highly likely) on the grass to reach my target time. The though of heavy legs and grass was not a nice thought!

bonkers20 · 06/05/2011 22:40

Moshi I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum. She needs you right now so as the others have said, put the races on hold, but running will help you to keep strong through difficult times ahead so try and get out when you can. It will be good for your Mum to see you looking healthy.

bonkers20 · 06/05/2011 22:41

backwardpossom good luck for your 10K tomorrow! Looking forward to the race report.

drivingmisscrazy · 06/05/2011 22:49

yes, backwardpossum - the best of luck tomorrow...hope you get the time you are looking for

backwardpossom · 07/05/2011 00:09

Ah thanks guys - I'm just using it as a training run as have my sights on the half in 2 weeks. :) Was thinking of doing 1k intervals at it. Will see... It's a nice flat course tomorrow, much like the Edinburgh course, so will be a good run I'm sure. Just trying to stay injury free at the mo!

peachsmuggler · 07/05/2011 09:28

Good luck possum! hope the race/training session goes well! Smile

Wheelybug · 07/05/2011 11:15

Hope its gone well backwardpossum !

Managed to go out for 5K in about the only 25 min break in the rain this morning which was quite fortunate. Long run tomorrow...

DrNortherner · 07/05/2011 12:53

Good luck tomorrow backwardpossom !

Rain here today, but I managed 8 miles by the river with my dog and loved every mile. Used cestlavies pointers and kept thinking about my core, posture and leg lift. Felt good today. If only that were the case with every run hey?

TheChewyToffeeMum · 07/05/2011 15:09

Sorry to hear about your mum moshi.

I did a hilly 7 miles this morning in the drizzle. Probably did it a bit fast though and had my first experience of tummy trouble while running - not nice.

MrsWednesday · 07/05/2011 16:20

Much love to you and your mum Moshi. You always seem like a very strong person, and I imagine you will be a brilliant support for your mum - we are here when you need to share your load. Hopefully you will be able to get out and run to clear your head, even if you can't do the triathlon.x

I've done my last long run before the marathon - 16 tedious and somewhat heavy-legged miles along the canal. Then straight to help at the school fair where I'd been allocated the craft stall (someone was having a laugh as I'm the least crafty creative type ever). I'm knackered now, I think the craft stall was actually more exhausting than the running...

Good luck tomorrow backwardpossom.

Cestlavie, I feel the same when I see the fairweather runners out which is a bit unfair but also allowed I think, as long as nothing is verbalised Smile. They are usually overtaking me too, as I'm plodding along at the end of my LSR, having been up since the crack of bloody dawn

Thecoo, have had achilles problems this year (tendonitis) - resting and icing helped, but stretching has made the most difference, loads of different calf stretches with the foot at various angles, as well as heel dips on the stairs. It took about 6 weeks to heal but I did run again after about 4. I still stretch my calves and ice my achilles every day, regardless of whether I'm running that day or not.

Hope all the other injuries are fast to heal and nothing serious, it's so frustrating isn't it?

Happy weekend running.x

drivingmisscrazy · 07/05/2011 16:55

hello all - had a terrible night's sleep - DD has a nasty cough, she woke up, I settled her, DP and DD back to sleep within 15 minutes - me, still lying there wide awake 3 hours later! NOt helped by fretting about needing sleep for recovery...I have a rest day today and was planning on a 14 miler tomorrow; but legs are niggly and I guess it depends on how much sleep I manage tonight. I could do my last long run on Tuesday, but I do want to get one more done before the half marathon. I am suddenly feeling very unconfident and nervous about it...

OP posts:
pawsnclaws · 07/05/2011 16:56

Hi all, did my first parkrun today. I enjoyed it despite having had a very heavy night out last night - so much so I had to struggle not to throw up on the first lap up the hill. I think it was somewhere around 32 minutes, which was a pathetic effort but gives me something to work with I guess.

Last time I did a proper 5k before I had ds3 I did it in 23 minutes something - wish I could do that now! Also bumped into my son's old deputy head, lovely guy who is clearly a bit of a secret speedmeister! I had to try and make small talk with him afterwards whilst hoping I wouldn't either knock him out with alcohol fumes or collapse.

I just realised this morning that I missed wishing backwardpossom all the best, I thought the race was tomorrow - looking forward to the race report.

MrsWeds are you looking forward to the marathon?

robino · 07/05/2011 18:56

Paws - how on earth did you manage to run at all?! I'm
sure I would be incapable.

Well, in the light of training for half marathons, park runs, 10k runs etc my offering is very paltry but I'm pleased! DH got back late last night and I managed to feed DD3, stick her in his arms and get out for a run this morning. I ran a whole 2.14 miles without stopping! I shall attempt to do the same or similar tomorrow and then next weekend I'm going to go for 5k.

And peach - belated thank you for the link to the stretches, am going to have a proper look tonight.
