Wow the thread is moving too fast for me just now! Planning a 9 miler on Sunday, hope to fit in an easy 3 miles before then but I am aware of a slight crunching under my knee cap. I am guessing this means I need to work more on my quads.

I sympathise with the obsessive race planning. I have basically given up doing non-local races as the logistics were stressing me out more then the racing.

futurity · 20/05/2011 10:13

I know what you mean TheChewyToffeeMum. Even though I am not that far from London I have decided that (apart from the marathon!) I won't do any more runs there as generally all the trains are rubbish or not even working on Sunday mornings and it is just so stressful getting anything sorted. My half marathon in a few weeks is 10 mins drive from my home ...perfect! (I still stress about getting everything ready though!!).

Spoke to friends at running club last night about the whole headphone ban and we agreed that we could all survive (!) if we had someone to chat to so we are all going to do the run together...now all we have to do is decide a pace to run at.

squix · 20/05/2011 10:51

Ohh - thanks for all the advice - have been taking ibuprofen and a warm bath and a good night's sleep in my own bed have worked wonders. Still a bit stiff and apparently have a lovely bruise appearing on my backside.

Have work meetings and lots to do today but should be able to do some stretches throughout the day. I'll also go for a brisk walk tomorrow whilst DD is at Ballet.

DrNo - how are the flies that have taken up residence in your brain?

backwardpossum , MrsWedsnesday let me know if you need any 'local knowledge' to help you find your way around over the next day or so.

I live the other side of the water from where the race is (see I am starting to use race rather than run Smile) but from my window I can just about see along the coast to where we are running. I can confirm that today's conditions are bight and breezy. It rained earlier but is clear now.

Driving - so are you heading off this evening? All the best - will be thinking of you tomorrow - very excited for you and can't wait to hear how you get on.

Can't belive this weekend is here!

drivingmisscrazy · 20/05/2011 10:58

hello fellow racers (:o) and fellow runners; yes, I am packing my bag (and re-packing etc) and will be heading west this afternoon. I wish that DD and DP were coming now, but I'll be home by tea-time tomorrow. Good luck to all of you - can't wait to compare notes!

MoshiMoshi · 20/05/2011 11:55

Wishing you all the very best of luck possum, squix, MrsWeds and misscrazy!

sfxmum · 20/05/2011 13:34

possum, squix, MrsWeds and misscrazy GOOD LUCK

found this thought you might like it

here mostly revising for exam on the 13th and sorting out a very last minute party for dd, never believe when they say that they absolutely do not ever want a birthday party Shock

pawsnclaws · 20/05/2011 13:38

Getting excited for you now, ladies! Weather seems a little cooler this weekend, although it may be a bit blustery - hopefully if there's any wind it's blowing you all in the right direction!

Just got back from a school coffee morning and am suffering serious house envy. The mum concerned has just moved in to her newly designed and built house, and it's amazing. You know where you get shown from room to room, and you just keep thinking .... wow. You could fit the entire downstairs of my house into her kitchen Grin.

drivingmisscrazy · 20/05/2011 14:23

paws - I know that feeling! for a while the lesbian mums in dublin used to meet up for tea and cakes in people's houses - but the others were all much wealthier than us and lived in these fabulous houses. Ours (which I normally think is basically quite nice) was clearly just too small and grubby to invite them to - I think we have been dropped from the list on the grounds of being too scruffy and poor...

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 20/05/2011 14:39

Awww driving. Who wants to be friends with people that judge others on that basis anyway. The scruffy and the poor shall inherit the earth!! Tons of luck for tomorrow, I can't wait to hear about it, it sounds like such an interesting race. You asked about due dates a million years ago, am due on 18th November though from my LMP would be 23rd which I agree with and which was correct at the 7 and 9 week scans. Is it next week you guys have your NT scan?

Good luck also to mrsweds, squix, and possum, hope you get a nice cool day in Edinburgh!!! Looking forward to the race reports!

possum, can you pm me your link please?

Wheelybug · 20/05/2011 14:50

Just a quick pop in to say good luck tomorrow driving and good luck for sunday mrsweds, squix, and possum - PM your link Possum. Lopoking forward to hearing everyone's reports !!

Not much here to report - did an underwelming 5K in the gym yesterday. i hadfn't run for about 10 days and I felt all sort of uncoordinated. Hopefully got that out of the way - plan 10K tomorrow then back to normal next week.

drivingmisscrazy · 20/05/2011 15:18

peach - yes, NT scan on Tuesday. I think we are carefully not thinking about it, tbh. Due date is 3rd Dec by LMP and 29th November by scan dates.

Yes, I'm interested to see what the race will be like - probably will want to stop and take pictures!! Having a quick cuppa and then setting off for the West. Quite an adventure...good luck to all the Edinburgh runners too...

OP posts:
pawsnclaws · 20/05/2011 17:21

Aw, peach you're due on ds1's birthday, and driving your dp is due (by the scan) on my anniversary! No pressure or anything, but I expect both of you to bear those dates in mind .....

I wish I could say the mum with the amazing house is horrid or stuck up, but she's really lovely. I think she saw that I was a bit awe-struck by the huge glass atrium in the centre of the house going from the ground floor to the second floor, with the most enormous modern chandelier I've ever seen hanging from the top ceiling. I stood there gawping with my mouth wide open . DH is less fazed by that sort of thing, he would've cracked a joke about DelBoy and Rodney cleaning it!

peachsmuggler · 20/05/2011 17:41

Smile paws. Am Envy at the atrium in the middle of the house, that sounds amazing!

Got an email from our estate agents yesterday saying our landlord wants to sell our flat! Arrggghhh! In truth, we need to move this year due to not living near enough any local school to have a chance of getting in, and also due to increasing our numbers we would like to live in a house. However, worried now about having to move sooner rather than later. We are lucky in that we are renting and will be renting next house too so have flexibility but dont want to feel under pressure and end up taking anywhere! Not sure, in this market how quickly he will sell he flat anyway and these things usually take a bit of time so hopefully will not be out on our ears soon! Perhaps we will look for houses with atriums!!! Wink

DrNortherner · 20/05/2011 23:35

driving good luck for tomorrow! Go get 'em girl Grin

No running today for me. Had a busy day, and a family funeral, so feeling a bit knackered. Tomorrow I planned a 10 mile LSR, but BIL is tagging along and has ideas of me running it at race pace Hmm Who appointed him my coach?!

Good luch to all racers this weekend Smile

TheChewyToffeeMum · 21/05/2011 07:30

Just popping in to wish good luck to all this weekend's racers.

My crunching knee is slightly better after a slow 3-miler so I should be running my 9 miles tomorrow at about the same time as the Edinburgh half - will be thinking of you racing while I plod along!

Ormirian · 21/05/2011 07:56

Good luck everyone!

MrsWednesday · 21/05/2011 08:52

Good luck Driving, Squix and Possom - hope you aren't feeling as nervous as me Grin

Looking forward to reading all the race reports when I'm home, hopefully lying on the sofa recovering on Monday.

Happy weekend running everyone.x

DebiTheScot · 21/05/2011 09:50

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Hope you all get times you're happy with.

squix · 21/05/2011 13:17

Hello - good luck to my fellow edinburghers for tomorrow backwardpossum and mrswednesday - I am nervous, excited and being very snappy with Dd and Dh.

I have been taking ibuprofen and even found some ibuprofen gel to rub on the corker of a bruise I have on my behind. Went for a walk /jog this morning and it seemed ok - a bit stiff but ok. Mind you because I was paying attention to my body I noticed a sore left shin, a grinding in my right knee and twinge in my left hamstring .....I am sure they weren't there before.

Ohh - drivingmisscrazy should be finished by now - did she start at 9.00? Looking forward to her race report.

Thanks again for all your good luck wishes - they're much appreciated.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/05/2011 14:35

I hope your race went well driving, can't wait to hear how it went.

Good luck to all those at Edinburgh tommorrow. I hope the weather is pleasant but not too warm.

Still no running but did 54 miles on my bike. On roads so not as challenging as my off road ride but very undulating and the last 10 miles really hurt.

Happy running to everyone.

IreadthereforeIam · 21/05/2011 15:07

Just came on to wish everyone luck with their races this weekend - and also to ask for some advice!!

I'm thinking of doing the Great South Run (I have some friends in Pompey, so I'd be able to stay with them - I used to live there, many moons ago!!!). We've done a lot of fundraising for ASBAH in the past, and they sent a general message out on Facebook, asking if anyone would like to run the GSR in October to raise money for them. The thing is, I would need to register with them for £25, raise at least £100 (I don't think this'll be a problem - ds1 has Spina Bifida, and friends and family are always fab whenever myself or DH have been doing something that requires fundraising for them), and here's the thing - I think I'm going to have to pay for the entrance as well. Does anyone know how much it is? Wheely and Squix, you're both doing it, aren't you? How much was it? This might just drive DH over the edge - I think it'll probably be about £35, so I'll have spent £60 before we've put petrol in the car and driven down from Chester (5 hours!!), bought stuff for our hosts (wine etc!! Although, I would be cheap - no drinking the weekend of a race!!).

Running is supposed to be my 'cheap' form of exercise (not too much money knocking around in this house, unfortunately), but I'm a bit of a sucker for ASBAH (they've been fabulous for us), and I've definitely caught the running bug (I'm already thinking at how much I can get my time down by!!). Bit far to go, though. And the GNR isn't much closer (and at least I have somewhere to stay in Portsmouth).

Err, sorry, this has turned out a bit long Blush. Does anyone want to tell me what to do??!! advise me?

drivingmisscrazy · 21/05/2011 17:02

hello all; well, I survived! a wondrous time of 2h 27 mins BUT it was absolutely pissing rain, horizontal wind, hailstones on the tops, zero visibility, freezing cold (my arms were completely numb by the end); there was a good bit of steep ascent (and descent) but the main problem was that other than the parts that were on the road, it was so so rough underfoot. Like trying to run through a river with rocks in it - I fell a couple of times. And by the time the slow-coaches got there the ground was completely churned up (like a festival!!) I think I need to train properly for this kind of running. Am gutted about the time - I'd worked hard, or so I thought, but I just didn't have any determination today (I am coming down with a cold for sure). But nothing is broken at least.

I am sure my wet clothing added a few pounds as well. It was so wet that they had to haul us out of the field car park with a tractor. On a fine day, at least the views would have been rewarded - on a day like today, I just wanted it to end.

Hope Edinburgh (flat, on roads!) will prove productive of good times (I was passed by someone doing the full marathon close to the finish, just to make me feel really crap about my poor showing).

I think I am really not very good at running :)

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 21/05/2011 17:25

driving - those conditions sound atrocious - no wonder you didn't run a PB, who would ? Sounds like you did a great time in the circumstances. Even without the weather, it would take longer than running along the roads. Don't be hard on yourself - You did GREAT !

Iread - The GSR is quite a lot. Can't quite remember but I think more like £40. SO would cost you quite a bit. Me and DH are doing it, plus having to pay for accomodation so its costing us quite a lot which is a bit silly as we probably could have done a smaller race nearer but I fnacied doing a biggie.... which I might regret when its crowded...

squix · 21/05/2011 17:43

Driving - well done, you did GREAT in horrible conditions - I'm not sure that I wouldn't have just given up and walked round or looked for a nice medic to help me. It sounds as if you needed all that determination and training behind you to get round.
And 'not very good at running' - compared to who? Paula Radcliffe or the vast majority of folk who buy a pair of trainers and never break a sweat. Grin

Iread - yup I think the GSR was £38/£39 - so quite pricey. My sister lives down that way and me, her and my dad are doing it so whilst it's a race it's also going to be a social weekend and it's close to my nephew's birthday. We'll be in a hotel but I'm hoping to get a premier inn close to where my sis lives which is about 30 mins away then we will all drive down together.

IreadthereforeIam · 21/05/2011 18:14

Thanks Wheely and Squix. I'm just going to have to talk it over with dh, I think. I can still do a sponsored run for ASBAH, just not give them the extra £25 for the pleasure! I've always wanted to run the GSR - all those years of living there, and I never felt I could (I was 5 stone heavier at the time, and 'running' was a four letter word!!). Seems like a good excuse to go and see my godson as well!!

Congratulations on that time, driving - those conditions sound terrible!! It was bad enough running in constant drizzle last weekend, but hailstones etc, sounds like a nightmare!! Good for you on doing it in such a good time!!
