Please message me your details backwardpossom

I'm blue pen, my number is ten thousand and something.

pawsnclaws · 18/05/2011 15:10

Will sponsor you ladies when DH gets home - backward pm please! Have to be tonight as I had to cancel my bank card today. I got a call from the bank to say that last night someone was trying to order massive amounts of stuff on the Internet using my card, so I've just spent ages with them going through my transactions. Whoever has my card details likes pizza hut and Next mostly..... Luckily they didn't have the PIN so only one transaction made it through, which has been refunded.

Bit of cross training today following my 6 mile jog back from dropping my car at the repair centre! Talk about it never rains but it pours ......

Ormirian · 18/05/2011 15:16

Hello.

An getting back into it slowly. Still get pains in my feet due to tendons but it's not too bad. Made an attempt to lose weight with low-carb but couldn't run at all so knocked that on the head. Did 4.5 miles last night. Will do the same Thursday, Will try a little further at the weekend.

No races here. Long way to go before I can even do those sort of distacnes let alone speeds.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 18/05/2011 16:23

Lots of speedy running going on.

Not here sadlyHmm 4 slightly painful miles yesterday and now I'm not running until sunday to give my knee a rest.

Will be getting on my bike though. Planning an off-road ride tommorrow to see if I am really up to doing the whole of the South Downs Way. If all goes to plan I will take in 2 high points of the SDW with a drop to sea level in the middle so should test my legs and help to keep up my fitness.

Also planning a 50 mile road ride on Saturday! I've done a few 40 mile rides but the only time I have done 50+ was the London2Brighton bike ride. The biggest challenge seems to be finding a route of the right distance. I don't do laps so have to find a decent route that keeps me off the main roads.

Debi if you are ever down this way the South Downs are lovely, great for walking, cycling and running.

Wheely I have a scary road bike and a mountain bike, don't know much about hybrids tbh. I think they can vary alot from the road bike end of the spectrum to the mountain bike end IYSWIM. A good place to start would be a decent independent bike shop.

I hope all those racing this week are getting plenty of rest and looking after themselves.

cestlavie · 18/05/2011 17:40

Wow, that's pretty uninspired thieves paws. Nick a card and splash out on a pizza and some socks... hardly worth the bother!

Sounds like a few people struggling with injuries (doyou, ormirian) - hope they sort themselves out. 'Tis incredibly frustrating waiting for injuries to get better and equally difficult not to get out and push yourself just that little bit too soon...

backward and squix forgot to say good luck for your half marathons coming up as well as to MrsWed. Feels like it should be great running conditions this weekend, not too hot for sure and hopefully dry.

Can absolutely relate to your heat concerns futurity - just got my stuff through my HM at the end of June and in big BOLD letters is a warning about it being a trail HM, with no shade and that it gets very hot. Am seriously wondering about at what sort of temperature it makes sense to not do it and just how much liquid it is feasible to carry round Confused

You're sounding much more chirpy Moshi - glad to hear there's a good course of action for your mum.

futurity · 18/05/2011 18:33

cestlavie - I did my first Race for Life (6 months after I had started running..5 years ago) in 30 degrees! Stupid I know but I was so keen to do it...I survived but felt VERY odd afterwards...was red and looked like a tomato! Does make me wonder why they make the Race for Life (which are most peoples first experience of running) at 11am in July !! (well mine was). At least the half starts at 9am but of course I will still be running by 11am...oops!

sfxmum · 18/05/2011 18:39

futurity mine was at the same temperature in the middle of a heatwave, over 30 at 9am I spent the entire time throwing water on my head

DrNortherner · 18/05/2011 19:04

I am so excited about this weekends races guys. Will be living to hear your race updates Grin

You are not selling this tapering malarkey to me at all guys.........how long a taper should I have for a half?

I chickened out of the club race last night, so instead went for a run with dh's bro and his wife. Well, BIL runs marathons and gets great times. He knows what speed we normally run at and decided to push us. Well he certainly did. We did 3 miles at 8.25 m/m (way out of my comfort zone, I couldn't speak) then into the local pine woods for some serious off road stuff including a huge climb, that he made us do twice. I actually had a little bit of sick in my mouth at the end He shouted at us the whole way 'It's money in the bank girls, up the pace' Sil was ready to punch him at the end Grin

drivingmisscrazy · 18/05/2011 19:18

DrNo I took my taper guidance from Hal Higdon's Intermediate programme - a slight tail-off in weekly mileage a fortnight out (but not the long run) and then 4m Tues, 3 m Thurs (he has a 30 min tempo on the Weds which I didn't do, as I ran the others a bit longer) and then 2 full days' rest before the marathon itself.

I didn't run today (biked 20k for commute instead); might stretch my legs tomorrow - no more than 5k though...

I really think it depends on how much mileage you've been doing and how much recovery you tend to need - I've run 210km in the last 30 days and probably need the rest...

MoshiMoshi · 18/05/2011 19:24

sciencebint - thanks for tips re calories! V much appreciated.

Wheelybug · 18/05/2011 20:16

drNo - I think your SIL (and you for that matter) were very restrained not to have slapped your BIL. I have been known to think murderous thioughts of DH when he's taken me a hilly route without him giving 'pep talks' throughout (that's something he wouldn't dare do.....). But does sound like you had a good run !!!

doyouthink - you're right, there is a good independent bikeshop right at the end of my road so I should just go up there and ask ! They also do 2nd hand ones so that might be an option too.

My RFL is 11am on July 10th - My Mum is really worried about the heat. Am hoping we have a usual British July for her sake. It'd be a shame if it was too hot for her to run it all. Mind you, she said she'd never run further than 5K and she is now doing 6K in her regular runs and has almost agreed to do an 8K run near her (saltdean to marina for those that know it) along the seafront in September. She should be ok I reckon given she runs a hilly grassy route now and the 8K is on the flat. Not bad for a 67 year old who used to hide during school x country Grin.

Wheelybug · 18/05/2011 20:18

oh and I really am going to go to the gym tomorrow. Feel much recovered. Although I did get a nasty gash on my finger today from a bit of glass.... not sure that's a good enough excuse to go to Costa instead though Grin. Seriously, though, am missing it - think it might be why I've been a miserable moany bag to DH and being v. bored and unsatisfied with everything. Hope it is anyway....

backwardpossom · 18/05/2011 22:27

Just popping in to say a huge thank you to those of you who have been in touch. I love this thread :) x

YeahThatsTheBadger · 18/05/2011 23:12

backwardpossom could you pm me your details please?

Wow wheely, your Mum sounds amazing!

I managed 3 miles today. Still don't really want to increase my distance as my knee is still achey. But I've got my new trainers and I'm hoping that may help, and I've increased my warm up and cool down time. I'm still loving it though!

Good luck to this weekends racers.

backwardpossom · 18/05/2011 23:27

Will do, thanks x

I'm stunned by everyone's generosity. Seriously, I can't thank you enough :)

drivingmisscrazy · 19/05/2011 08:25

to run, or not to run, that is the question? I've to drop DD to nursery and then come home and clean the house Blush, then go to work, and get back for midwife visit this afternoon :) but if I can fit in 5k of running, do you think this would be a good idea? Race is 9am Saturday

pawsnclaws · 19/05/2011 10:04

driving go for it, but gently!

Keep forgetting the sponsorship, but have received the pms .....

So apparently my card is being used to buy hundreds of pounds worth of clothes, jewellry, bikes and toys ...... only of course the transactions don't get through without the PIN. And I just received another email from a friend of mine all about natural cures for erectile dysfunction (trust me she is the least likely person to send such an email ....) - this internet business just isn't safe, is it?!

cestlavie · 19/05/2011 10:39

Sorry, just seen your PM MrsWed so have sponsored you - really good luck with it.

Possom happy to sponsor you too if you PM me. It's definitely a busy weekend for people on here this weeked. I'm actually quite jealous as my HM seems a long way off and not half as exciting a route as those this weekend.

drivingmiss I'd be inclined not to do. Really quite close to race day now rest is pretty key. If, on the other hand, you feel like you're going mad not running, maybe a very slow 5K would be okay.

Love the sound of your run with your BIL DrNo - you know you've had a good workout when you feel you're about to throw up!

futurity · 19/05/2011 11:41

Bother! Got my race pack this morning for my half and in big capital letters it says: FOR SAFETY REASONS, RUNNERS ARE REQUESTED NOT TO WEAR HEAD/EARPHONES OF ANY SORT. (although doesn't mention being disqualified if you do which I have read in another race leaflets)

I was kind of expecting it as the roads aren't closed and I know it is becoming more common..just a pain as it wasn't mentioned at all on the site when I signed up (and I looked all over!). I do all my long runs with music although I do run at running club without (but that only lasts 45 mins!). I remember someone earlier in this thread had the same last minute news like this...who was it and what did you do about it!? I know I am quite capable of running without it but I kinda like listening to music and there won't be THAT many people to talk to running at my slow pace!

sfxmum · 19/05/2011 11:57

futurity the half DH did a couple of weeks ago had the same directive, but I would say about 60% of people ignored it the route was mostly roads and towpaths

Goldberry · 19/05/2011 13:26

Good luck, all you racers. I'm having trouble finding races which fit in my calendar - I seem to be busy every weekend for ages. Ah well, tbh I'm enjoying just getting out there and running at the moment, so maybe I don't need the extra motivation of a race. I really pushed myself at running group on Tues, so went for a nice easy run this morning in the sunshine - lovely!
Moshi, glad to hear things are looking up a bit for your mum. Wheely - I hope I'll still be running at your mum's age. I always find it impressive when I see older people out running - gives me hope that I haven't taken it up too late in life!
In the absence of a race to aim for, my target for the moment is to vary my running routes and maybe drive to somewhere nice where I could run. I looked longingly at listings for races on the coast, but some nice Oxfordshire countryside will have to do for now! Looking forward to fitting a couple of runs in when we go camping in the New Forest in the summer though.

Wheelybug · 19/05/2011 13:43

futurity - I think it was Thetastigma who had the same problem recently - The last race I did said no MP3 etc . As I only have a shuffle I put it in my pocket and when I was waiting at teh start saw loads of people with them so used it all the way round. I noticed on the organiser's website they now say 'we recommend...' rather than 'not allowed'. I'm guessing its so they're not liable if you get run over or something.

MoshiMoshi · 19/05/2011 14:09

possum - +1 for PMing me your details please!

Bootcamp today. Feeling quite lazy on this light schedule but reminding myself that it is time for my body to rest before the next 18 week campaign begins in June!

Probably won't run tomorrow as have no form of childcare (daily cleaner has moved house). House getting muckier and muckier and I am getting twitchier by the minute. She was only here a couple of hours each morning but it was certainly useful to squeeze in my daily run. I used to buggy run everywhere but am loath to take it up again in case it affects my gait again having worked so hard on getting it back. Mind you, needs must so maybe just tomorrow may be fine if I only go for a short 5 or 6 miles or so? What does everyone think about buggy running? I spent 7 years doing most of my running with a buggy and it seemed fine at the time but I definitely prefer to be on my own now they are heavier!

MoshiMoshi · 19/05/2011 14:11

BTW mum has gone and splurged on a Chanel handbag and a LV handbg with money she doesn't have. Am not sure what is more stressful, her cancer treatment or her profligate spending habits.

drivingmisscrazy · 19/05/2011 14:28

Moshi curious about buggy running too - didn't really do it with DD, but it's taken me a loooong time to get anywhere near my former fitness (easier to lose and harder to get back the older you get, it seems), so have been thinking about this for DC2...any ideas?

waiting for midwife to come for 1st visit!
