Wheelybug · 09/05/2011 16:11

now 6 - that should read Confused

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2011 18:15

thanks Wheely I am just trying to get as many stories as possible about IUGR babies' growth. DS2 was 4lbs and is still on same centile (0.4th) at 16m so no catch up yet Sad. Otherwise healthy and development fine though, which is Smile compared to our worries during pg. If you could pm me your story I'd be very grateful. Sorry for temporary thread hijack everyone Blush.

drivingmisscrazy · 09/05/2011 18:40

sleepwhenidie - had to look that up - seen the acronym before, but couldn't remember what it meant. DD is pretty small (smaller at 2.4 than the 20 month old at the playground today Shock) but not off the charts. Don't worry about hijack - we're here to help each other in whatever ways we can - it doesn't have to be running only!

for some reason scared of my long run tomorrow - am tired, took 2 days off. Sure it will be fine - think I am worried about HM as well. Why do we do it to ourselves?

drivingmisscrazy · 09/05/2011 18:42

DrNo see you got embroiled in the ridiculous Thatcher thread too Blush; we are on the same side, I'm glad to say...(another hijack, sorry)

DrNortherner · 09/05/2011 19:13

Yes DRiving not many things boil my blood but MT does, we stand side by side!....

cestlavie my ds could run a mile probably from aged 6/7 I would say. He is however, very sporty, and was whizzing around on his bike with no stabalisers just before he turned 4. He is a super fast sprinter and it took him a while to learn to slow it down to get further, but he gets it now. He represents his school at cross country so is keen to get out and train with dh and I!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 09/05/2011 20:23

I am interested in all the comments about getting kids running. My DD is 4 and would be a couch potato if left to her own devices. The only activity she enjoys is swimming but I would love to introduce her to running without putting her off.

I have just done a 5 mile treadmill session with fast(ish) mile intervals. Does anyone else find it hard to maintain the same pace as they would manage on the road? I thought treadmill running was supposed to be easier.

drivingmisscrazy · 09/05/2011 20:47

I'm also interested in getting kids into running - DD is way too small, but is conscious of running (so will say, 'there's a man going for a run' - a man in kit, but 'that boy's running' - about a little kid just running along). I don't know if she'll like it, but she's very spatially aware (knows where things are in relation to one another, likes to point out directions), so I was thinking about trying to develop that through orienteering - they start with kids, so that might be a way of making running seem a bit more interesting?

I always find the paces on the TM easier, but I find it far harder on the old legs and muscles - it may be because I usually do speed work at the gym, but I think the very repetitive actions stress things that are ok with the multiple movements that come from running on the road/off road

sfxmum · 09/05/2011 20:49

hi all just a quick post on the running with children topic, Runners world had a feature in its most recent edition (June) on the subject.
they advice maximum distances for different ages and talk about exercises to do with them as well as
this site was mentioned too

dd will be 6 in a few weeks and she likes pretending to jog but she of course is easily distracted by all manner of birds, twigs, stones, dogs and so on
she is however very enthusiastic about it and likes the idea of racing particularly as she as been both of us doing it, as I have mentioned we will take her to the GOSH family 5k fun run next month, I hope she develops a love of the sport.
in the meantime she goes with us on short runs riding her bike at which she is quite competent and rather fearless, and I say short runs because otherwise I can't keep up

sfxmum · 09/05/2011 20:51

she has seen not been

DrNortherner · 09/05/2011 21:05

I read an article about a mum who ran a 10mile race with her 8 year old ds I was impressed but a bit [shocked]. 10 miles is a long way for a small boy...

DS has always loved running and from being 4/5 would beg us to time him sprinting from one point to another and keep trying to beat it. He has a digital stop watch and he times his mates at playtimes. Perhaps I have spawned a future Olympian Grin

pawsnclaws · 09/05/2011 21:29

I try and do most of my speed work at the gym, otherwise I cheat and drop the pace Blush.

MrsWednesday · 09/05/2011 21:30

I'm a bit embarrassed to say I'd never really thought about getting my two out running with me! I suppose it's because I like the peace and quiet Blush

Might give it a go though, DS2 in particular would be good at it I think. DS1 is too busy playing football to do anything else.

Driving, have been reading and meaning to post to say that you sound like you are extremely well prepared for your HM, you've got plenty of distance miles in your legs so you'll sail round!

Thecoo, good point about waiting to see what the physio says - I've had so many things wrong with my legs recently that I can't remember what stretch is for what bit. Hope all goes well.

Great time backwardpossom, in tough conditions! Not long to go until race day for us all now...

Paws, I am looking forward to the marathon - I can't believe it's nearly here! I just want to get on with it now. Will be going back to the pre-London thread and copying people's lists of things to take - is there anything vital that you wished you'd had but forgot?

Hope you are ok Moshi.x

drivingmisscrazy · 09/05/2011 21:32

10 miles (racing!) seems an awful lot for an 8 year old! I don't have a device that can track pace when I am outside (I think I might need to fix this if I want to get better - oh yes, back to that Garmin purchase again...) so have to do any kind of structured speedwork in the gym. Hate it, except my gym is full of OAPs, so do at least feel temporarily young and fleet of foot :o

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2011 21:44

driving - have you tried geocaching with DD? Lots of fun and builds in the orienteering.

drivingmisscrazy · 09/05/2011 21:50

wow, that looks like fun. She's only 2.4 though, so might have a bit of a wait (she's quite clever, I think, but not quite that precocious!!)

Will PM you tomorrow sleep

Chewy - I dohalf my runs on the treadmill and I definitely can't/don't run as fast on a TM as out on the road. I think its psychological though.....

Wheelybug · 09/05/2011 22:08

x-post with you science - A bit different from you but I started running to lose weight and now use it to maintain weight (plus still trying to lose a bit) and do find the whole nutrition re-fueling thing tricky as I don't want to take on the extra calories that are sometimes needed.

DH, on the otherhand, loses weight by just breathing and has health issues and struggles to cope if he doesn't eat enough so has very different running nutrition needs although doesn't always take that on board !!

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2011 22:30

herecomesthesciencebit I have been trying to lose weight since new year and between then and a month ago I exercised on average 6 days per week, a mixture of sessions of weight training and cardio (rowing/treadmill/stairmaster) in the gym/swimming and running - running has been featuring more heavily since the weather improved! During that time I was also careful about what I ate, without feeling like I was depriving myself...so good carbs but none after 6pm most nights, plenty of healthy snacks and a couple of treats a day (a skinny latte, a glass of wine or a couple of squares of dark choc). My aim is to get to my target weight, a few more lbs away, then keep up the exercise and therefore be able to eat more or less what I want rather than feeling like I am "watching my weight" which feels soo dull.

I would highly recommend using something like livestrong.com or myfitnesspal to log your food intake and exercise sessions. It sounds as if rationally you know you need more food to provide enough energy but these apps will show you in black and white whether you are eating enough to maintain your weight. For most people it focuses their mind in the opposite direction, to stop them eating too much but for you it may help you get your head around what is an appropriate amount to consume given your activity levels?

Interestingly for the last month DS has been mostly off school and we have been away from home - I haven't been watching what I eat at all and exercise has been more sporadic, only 3 weights sessions for example as no gym available. Lots more running though. I have been feeling like I have put weight on but weighed myself at the gym today and have lost a pound Shock - so I can only credit the running for being so effective at keeping weight in check....fwiw I still feel like I look better overall - ie more firm/toned with regular weight training though Smile.

peachsmuggler · 09/05/2011 22:33

Great time possum, sounds like you are really on track for your half.

Smile at your DS and tired running antics DrNo. It's lovely to hear about everyone's kids running and cycling. I get a bit teary when I think of DD (3) not being little anymore, but then there are so many lovely things to do together when they get a bit older. In other tearful moments, I am completely with you DrNo on MT. Sometimes when I see her on tv or talk about her I can feel tears of rage surfacing. Hideous.

Still no blimmin running here as too tired. Am hoping second trimester brings surge of energy. Got 12 week scan on Thursday and am absolutely bricking it.

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2011 22:34

Oh and you definitely need carbs for those long runs - and some protein immediately after. I have read that there is a window of about an hour after you do a hard training session where whatever you eat is burnt immediately as fuel anyway so you should make the most of it Grin. If you read anything about athletes' training and diet they will always mention ensuring protein intake straight after training to get muscles repairing themselves asap - a six hour wait for food after a 12m run just can't be good for you....

peachsmuggler · 09/05/2011 22:35

And sending love to Moshi.

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2011 22:37

peachsmuggler do not watch the new Fairy ad if you find the thought of ds growing up makes you tearful...I keep having to switch it off Blush
