Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

I have found the 2011 thread altho tbh, I haven't been looking for runners! It's lovely to see several "familiar faces" still going and loads of runners giving it a go.
I had a go at the c25k last year and gave it up when it became too dark and too cold to run. But, I finally had my first run of the year today... and it felt good. I went back to week 3 and found 90 seconds comfortable and three minutes a huge struggle. I hope to get further this year. Most of all, I hope to lose the lumps that have re-appeared on my thighs since I stopped running Grin.

Morning all!

Just back from W6R1, around the lake at the conference centre where I've been staying this weekend. So lovely to hear birdsong instead of sirens, and to run on grass instead of pavements :). Bit damp and chilly, but beats the snow and ice I'm used to at home Grin.

Next stop on the midtowner running tour of Britain will Hyde Park, on Tuesday.

midtowner · 13/02/2011 08:12

piste - yes. One CE every 5 years is plenty thank you!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/02/2011 10:27

Morning all.

Now I am on longer runs I am considering doing two rest days between. It would still work out as three times a week - Sat,Tues,Fri. I don't want to lose momentum though. I have religiously gone every other day since the start, but couldn't on the last time, so I had two days rest and actually felt much better.

I'm going to try this and see, but if I feel I am losing momentum and shall go back to alternate days.

Good running all!
Am loving midtowners Tour of Britain!

cubscout · 13/02/2011 19:00

Well done for getting out sybil. Know what you mean about overdressing.

Piste, I also feel much better after 2 days rest. I'm sure you won't loose momentum. I would ideally like 2 rest days but because of work and ds commitments I can only run certain days. So tend to do Mon, Wed and Sat. Am also quite busy in the next couple of weeks do may only manage 2 a week.

How ate the new recruits getting on?

cubscout · 13/02/2011 19:02

Sorry, how are new recruits! Hard to type on a pnone.

YorkshireCrockpot · 13/02/2011 19:59

Went out this morning- just me the ducks and squirrels. Didn't quite finish the last 5 min run but it felt good overall. Staying on week4 at the mo. Run both days at weekend and then midweek.
Would rather run in NYC/ sydney tho!
Actually heard myself breathing today over my iPod and I realise I sound like an asthmatic camel- so glad no ones up in time to see me!

happypotter · 13/02/2011 20:24

Have a five minute 'guest break' so have been able to have a catch up on here. Everyone seems to be doing really well. I'm going back to the gym in the morning so will (hopefully) get week 3 day 2 done. I am in awe of anyone doing 25 minute runs as at the moment it feels a huge achievement to get to a minute and a half.

Midtowner - We moved to Long Island last June after three months in Manhattan. The 5K is on March 19 in Wantagh Park and there is a Diva Long Island Half Marathon on October 2 in Garden City. You get a spinning bling medal, feather boa and tiara so definitely worth doing!!!!! I was having five minutes of madness when I entered as I thought it would do me good to have a long term goal. Clearly, I've been having second thoughts ever since.

MarniesMummy · 14/02/2011 11:28

Hi everyone who's new and everyone who's been out there running. I've not posted in a while as I've had a very busy weekend. Pantomime performances (Oh no I haven't!), baking and icing a zillion cakes (no exaggeration!), anyway, hi one and all!

I'm back from having completed w5r3, twice!
Wait, wait, there was method in my madness (or so I think).
Basically since I last posted I have repeated the 8min run up my Eiger sucessfully and so started the 20min run and managed 17mins of it with one or two shoddy bits (well I stopped twice for about 10seconds). I got to the top of the Eiger but just didn't hve anything left to give even though the first few yards after the Hill are downhill before leveling out!! I was a bit cheesed off with myself and Laura's words of congratulation seemed so hollow.

I've been having a bad day today, the car wouldn't start which wouldn't be such a bad thing except I had the three DC's to get to school (they were late for the first time ever in their 3 years of education) and 4 trays of cakes and shortbread I've been baking for their class valentine's day sale.
I think I didn't focus properly on the run before I went out.

I twigged that I just didn't pace myself and so ran out of breath and just knew I needed another go so I did it again (but not up the Eiger just along the route home which has more 'usual' uphills in it) and I was fine. Yay!

I am so rubbish at pacing I think I think I'm putting in as much effort as I did in the 1min runs of w1 but translating it into going too fast rather than learning to mentally drive myself.
Anyway, no sad faces today. My head is up and I'm 'learning to train my mind Wink'.

MarniesMummy · 14/02/2011 11:33

Oh! I forgot to say that I'm going to repeat w5r3 as pacing myself to deal with the Eiger is necessary as this is Sheffield or do you think that's dumb and I should just crack on with week 6?

I think I need the mental strength of knowing I can do it on my usual route, even though my usual route is of the devil! [devil emoticon that MNHQ will no doubt add to the list of smileys next week]

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/02/2011 14:44

I think you should move on! When I asked about repeating, the consensus was that I needed to challenge myself, and that I didn't know I couldn't do it. Marnie - weren't you one who said to move on?!

Move on!

MarniesMummy · 14/02/2011 16:30

I know I did butGrin,

but,

at the end of that particular podcast Lura says 'If you didn't manage to complete the 20 minute run then maybe you should repeat the weeks podcasts' -not that I plan to repeat the entire week, but then she goes onto say how from here on in it's mostly runs of 25minutes.

So (apart from me being a crazy control freak) that's why I'm querying it. Now that you know that do you still think that I should move on?

If you do, I will.Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/02/2011 17:08

Ooooeeeerrrr
Um
Um
Hmm

I think the difference between our situations is that I was worried about moving on and needed to push it to see.

But.......you have to cope with the North face of the Eiger and need to work it out before moving on. Maybe you need to work out your pacing and build stamina before moving on.

Maybe as you say repeat once or twice and then go for it?

It does seem such a huge jump and then there's one more walk/ run combi and then it's just full on.

Maybe someone else will come along who has more experience!

cubscout · 14/02/2011 17:59

Hi MM. I would not personally worry about repeating a run, I have done it once or twice. But I think Piste is right in a way - you (we) do need to keep pushing ourselves. Pace is critical for me - I have had to slow down for the longer runs and I have also had to fight the urge to stay within a comfort zone!

I think the 20 min run is also quite important psychologically as it sets you up for the longer runs, so if you need to work out how to get it done for example by changeing pace, then do it. For what it's worth, I did not quite manage the 20 min run - I walked for a minute at about the 10 min mark. But I moved on anyway.

Good luck whatever you decide.

justaminute · 14/02/2011 18:22

I managed w2r2 yesterday - still enjoying it but scared by all your talk of 20 and 25 minute runs.

I was in the supermarket today and thought I'd treat myself to a magazine. For the first time I bought..... Womens Fitness! Does this make me a runner now? Wink.

ClenchedBottom · 14/02/2011 20:21

hi all. Most impressed with all your reports!

Well, think I said that I felt very silly for starting last Sunday (6th Feb) with w1r1 with lovely laura but then had to miss r2 on the Wednesday because most of my big toemail fell off.....(great typo there, I missed 'nail' out). Anyway, I went out on Friday instead, which was grim, and then again on Sunday - which was much better, which cheered me up. So now I'm thinking of attempting W2 - DH and I had thought that with such a bg gap between my first and 2nd runs, I might need to do another W1 run first, but I was pleased with how Sunday went - obviously I was still staggering around and struggling to breathe, but it's all relevant, right???
Actually one of my limiting factors is that I can't fasten my sports bra without help, how daft is that???

ClenchedBottom · 14/02/2011 20:22

justaminute - I'm with you at feeling terrified at the thought of running for 20 minutes........

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/02/2011 22:11

I'm terrified at the thought of 25 minutes too, and I'm doing them!

The whole thing seems ridiculous really. I can't believe it's actually me

GypsyMoth · 14/02/2011 22:15

w5r1 done!!

does feel better doing 3 5min runs....coped ok.

terrified too thinking about 25 mins....there isnt enough village to run in!!

Corriewatcher · 14/02/2011 22:22

Know what you mean Rather. I always had to be practically forced at gunpoint to do running at school (many years ago, mind), so still completely amazed that I'm doing 25 min runs in my 40s. As a friend said when I proudly told her I'd done the 20 min run, "there's no going back!" Now I know I can do it, I don't want to let myself down by giving in. The great weather today helped.

sybilfaulty · 15/02/2011 11:17

Clenched - I have to fasten mine at the front and twizzle it round!

Well done to everyone who has been out. We are getting some distances underway now, hurray. I am going out to supper this evening but am going for a run first. 25 mins. I can put it off no longer. I'll be back to report how it went.

Keep on running everyone.

MarniesMummy · 15/02/2011 12:02

Clenched - I was a powerwalker from May last year before starting this running malarkey and it's only been a few weeks since I've been able to fasten my sports bra alone!
Sadly this hasn't only been because it's dashed tricky, luckily the running has taken care of that problem.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/02/2011 18:43

Just done Week 7 Run 2 - 25 minutes. It was ok and I definitely benefitted from two days off. I went further too. I'm going to get DH to work out how far later.

I really didn't want to go today and had to
Kick my own arse out of the door ( horrid wet night ) but as always I am so glad I've been!

Sybil - how was it for you?!
Good running everyone
Smile
[knackered]

happypotter · 15/02/2011 19:21

Wow! All these 25 minutes runs!
I was pleased that I managed to finish my week 3 day 2 which was only run for a minute and a half, then walk for three and a half minutes, repeated about 9 times. I think I'm going to try and run even slower in the future (think speedy snail running!)
From what I'm reading it looks like most of you are running outdoors and not on a treadmill, is that right? At the moment, I've only done one outdoor run but I enjoyed it much more than being on the treadmill. I think I'll need to get out in the fresh air more.
For those of you who are further ahead and doing the longer runs, how much of it is to do with your general fitness increasing compared with a more 'I can do it' type of attitude? I just can't even imagine at the moment that I'll even be able to run for five minutes without keeling over.

sybilfaulty · 15/02/2011 19:48

Just back - 25 mins run (not to Rawbert), then 3 min walk, then 10 min run. It's so much easier with my own very camp music.

Well done to everyone who has been out. I was on the point of bottling but made it and am glad I did. Day off tomorrow but will try to run Thurs am before the school run. I find evening running easier but no DH here regularly til about 9 and so mornings it has to be.

Keep on running everyone Smile
