EU Trade war with China

This looks interesting and not something the bulk of member states wanted either.

I'm glad we're not involved, Chinese EV's are key to the successful transition to cleaner transport.

You are clearly of the very limited mindset that think Electric Vehicles are a solution to anything apart from SOME emissions in cities. Electric vehicles need to get their electricity from somewhere and ALL of this extrra infrastructure will require massive environmental damage (but just not in youir street perhaps). Still, with the ongoing real wars (bombing and destructiuon) electric vehicles are just a distraction. HYBRID vehicles use petrol/diesel less efficiently than even a normal car as they are carrying extra weight of batteries and producing electricity with small generators is less efficient. Still, as you say the UK is out of it, in so many ways:

There is nothing limited in my mindset thank you, it's based on empirical data.

Charging from home on solar, and use of renewable energy is key, we need to stop burning stuff.

Use of vehicle to grid, vehicle to load is key to balancing our power needs.

If you think that burning fossil fuels is the way ahead then you're mistaken.

Hybrid cars are the worst possible compromise, heavy, inefficient with two separate power trains.

Whereas the mighty UK in a trade war with China is such a good thing to look forward to...

Terrribletwos · 21/10/2024 15:48

What about all the lithium that has to be mined for the batteries, surely that's not environmentally friendly?

Agreed, that was what my post said, I'm glad we're aren't involved.

The bulk of it comes from Australia and once it's out it's recyclable.

Lithium is often extracted by salt water evaporation.

I didn't know this, thanks. I thought most of it was extracted from mines in China or Africa and could definitely not be recycled. Do you have any sources for this?

I’m not fully engaged but have heard a bit on BBC world service which was interesting

What’s our position on taking Chinese EVs do you know?

Chersfrozenface · 21/10/2024 16:22

Labour is holding off putting tariffs on Chinese EVs.

Not sure how importing EVs will help their aim of growing the UK economy.

Your ignorance is astonishing. If you think what happens in Europe doesn't affect us, you're delusional.

But then I guess most Brexshiteers are...

What a rude post, absolutely full of goady material and full wrong assumptions.

All the aluminium, copper and steel for the necessary upgrades to electricity distribution are sourced from overseas (over the channel at least) as the UK has next to none of these raw materials available so it all has to be bought in at a time when Europe, which has at least some of this and factories that can process it will also be chasing the raw material. If you are botherd aboput burning stuff then go and stop Israel from obliterating Gaza and the war in Ukraine which, along with other less blicised wars are burning astronomocal quantities for Oil products and increasing the need for concrete which is massively energy consuming. The factories producing weapons are also consuming vast quantities of natural resources, just so they can destroy someone else's property:. And you are worried about a few cars.

Nice tangent you are going off on there.

Nice tangent you are going off on there.

Since your opening stance is a blatant 'anti EU' position and then a refusal to accept that Global issues need Global solutions, combined with 'separatist' views in the mistaken premise that the UK is more important than a tiny island that it really is, it is clear you are simply an anti social (global) person:
