I may be on the wrong board here but no doubt for the short to medium term, Brexit has heightened the chance of this country being more impoverished… Where should our family of four move to? Even in a dream scenario? We are typical London parents: foreign born (Antipodean), I’m in my mid 40s, DH early 50s (!). DC 9 & 12. We have British citizenship as well as Antipodean and I have access to one more East European EU passport if I apply but it’s not somewhere we would choose to live. We had pretty good interesting careers in London but are probably on our way down… and simply don’t care as much about the big jobs anymore. DC both now in independent schools and thriving (so maybe we should care more but can’t see it either of us ever being the big boss). Paid off mortgage (yes we are lucky). The schools are the main thing keeping us here along with access to travel (not that we can do as much these days) plus reasonable jobs (typical near monolingual English speakers). We felt secure and relatively well off a few years ago but it all feels precarious now. We worry the demographics of an ageing population and anti-migrant stance across many mainstream parties (not all) mean we won’t have a state pension, access to healthcare will go down and the only way to pay for anything in the next 20
years is massive tax hikes on those who are ‘well off’ but not so rich that they’ve put everything in trusts. Overall I’m gloomy about living standards not recovering here in our lifetime. We have legal access to Australia and New Zealand but dislike the distance from the rest of the world there. We may at a push get EU passports. Where is on the way up in the next decade or two? DH thinks Europe is on way down too but this is my preferred continent. I know IABU btw but just want to fantasise about moving to countries I’ve not thought of perhaps.
