Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

Daniel Kawczynski boasted in 2019 he was almost fluent in Polish, yet claimed £22k in Polish language lessons.

So either this is a fraudulent claim or he was lying.

Peregrina · 05/01/2022 09:35

Bottom line: avoid a trade war at all costs, which = no A16 or spinning out of negotiations. Within that there'll be bumps, but that's big picture

I can't quite work out what all this means. Does it mean that Johnson is stringing the batshit rightwing of his party along? I do think he's the only one who could do a complete about turn and decided to go back into the Customs Union.

DGRossetti · 05/01/2022 10:19

I'm sorry, but how much business does Kawczynski need to conduct in Polish?

Absolutely zero.

We need to remember the mantra of Brexiteers also encompasses the "they should speak English" contingent.

I reckon this character is - like Liz Truss - another covert remainer hell bent on destroying Brexit from within. Let's just hope nobody suggests that in an open forum and blows their cover. It could make things difficult moving forwards.

prettybird · 05/01/2022 12:09

Interesting article in The Atlantic about whether Britain (aka the UK) will survive as an entity post Brexit.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2022/01/will-britain-survive/621095

He gets some things wrong (eg he says "Nominally, Britain has a National Health Service, but in practice this has been broken up into its component (sub)national parts." It has not been broken up into its constituent parts - the NHS in Scotland set up separately from its inception Confused (initially under the purview of the Scottish Office), but in general it's an interesting analysis.

I also disagree with his hypothesised glimmer of hope for a sense of "Britishness" being developed out of a sense of "non-Europeness" Confused. I think that is a fundamental Anglocentric misunderstanding of what it feels to be Scottish (or Welsh or Northern Irish). Hmm

HannibalHeyes · 05/01/2022 12:19

I'm sorry, but how much business does Kawczynski need to conduct in Polish?

He probably only does it when he's trying to ask a foreign government to go against his own government otherwise known as treason

I wonder how Boris Johnson will let the UK spank the US over steel ?

It might be an idea to work out what the UK imports from the US so we can slap a few tariffs around.

I guess we really need to show them who's boss. Presumably La Truss is a biro away from triggering A16 ? I'm guessing the fact that has all gone quiet means Something Big is About To Happen ?

HannibalHeyes · 05/01/2022 12:22

To be frank, any time it's all gone quiet, it usually means Bozo is on a holiday at some donors place in the sun...

DuncinToffee · 05/01/2022 12:31

Best for Britain
A view from Germany: "Johnson thinks it is great that pint glasses now have a royal crown again. Hopefully this grand achievement will comfort all those Brits in the pub, drowning their sorrow at the stupidity of their own government." ~AA

Lonelycrab · 05/01/2022 13:13

There was nothing saying that we had to remove the crown stamp from glasses in the first placeHmm

www.bbc.co.uk/news/59868823

Aside from the fact that a pint glass these days seems to be covered in massive sodding brewers logos anyway. All this fuss about a couple of tiny markings near the top...

@Peregrina

I'm sorry, but how much business does Kawczynski need to conduct in Polish? It sounds like a poor excuse. I imagine that if he has some Polish constituents his mother tongue will be perfectly good enough to communicate with them.

That assumes that he wants to communicate with constituents - but with the present lot, you have to wonder if that is so. I am just looking forward to see a flood of them stepping down when the next election is called.

I doubt the MP for Moscow and Riyadh is aware that some of his constituents speak Polish.

He doesn't like to communicate with others of his constituents in English. I suggest to him at the time of the Paterson vote farce that if he thought that MPs should be held to the same standards as other professions then if I were drunk and abusive to staff during the working day then no matter whether or not there was an appeal system I would be out of a job and should the same apply to MPs.
No idea why he hasn't replied.

"this is not the brexit I voted for"

Edward Leigh in PMQs- Apparently the govt is thinking of relaxing visa controls from India in order to get a free trade deal... our new working class voters, who voted for brexit, did not vote to replace immigration from Europe with more immigration from the rest of the world...

The only logical and reasonable conclusion as to why Brexit is this shit, is because those in charge of it don't believe in it ...

Is certainly a very useful line to start punting in discussions. It catches Brexiteers off guard, and most piss-myself-laughingly seems to lead to suggestions that it's time to vote for UKIP (again).

Which is why the non-dim know you never pay the Dane Geld.

Can we tweet Edward Leigh ? Tell him to dump the traitorous remainer Boris (who has already started appointing his remainer friends Grin ) and get a real Brexiteer in ?

Peregrina · 05/01/2022 21:03

Was Edward Leigh on this afternoon? I wish I had seen it, but I went out.

Peregrina · 05/01/2022 21:09

Found the clip now on twitter. But to be fair, that's telling it like it is - a lot of Leave voters didn't like E European immigration and are going to like more immigration from India even less.

Opal8 · 05/01/2022 21:12

Such horror at "More Brown people"...

But leavers aren't racist

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

(Gotta wonder what RS, SJ, NZ and PP feel about that label of horror from the back benches...)

Apparently the new system for horticultural produce post Brexit runs on Internet Explorer which was discontinued last March 🙄 twitter.com/jdpoc/status/1478521702976004099?s=21

Placemarking as it gets worse and worse. Did I say Happy New Year to you all? If not, Happy New Year.

GaspodeWonderCat · 06/01/2022 09:14

"Years ago I recall reading a Graun article listing the many many govt IT projects that ended in failure running into hundreds of millions of pounds. Just what is it about this country’s civil service that it can’t do successful tech?" @DrBlackbird

Project leaders get moved to new jobs every few years, the new leaders change things to get their own stamp on projects. The IT contractors say 'cheers easy' lets have more money ta very much.

When projects are specified they can be too proscriptive - so when technology 'improves' still tied in to older versions.

Project leaders don't understand IT (did classics at Oxbridge), don't listen to staff who do, led by the nose/pocket by industry (jobs when you retire from civil service/MOD et al) ...

I could go on ....

And now JRM is suggesting the NI Rise be delayed

The Tories din't seem to be happy with "Not Guilty" verdict fot rhe Colston 4. The defense lawyer even used the Human Rights Act.

He is right though.
If families do indeed face an extra £1200 cost of living hike, that will be devastating, plus tax allowances are frozen and inflation at 6 or 7%.

Of course a wealth tax would cost Sunak far more than the £8k rise in NI would mean.
8k is a bottle of wine for him.

Reason enough to celebrate it then.

I messaged friend in the US when the verdict was announced. We found ourselves watching the live coverage simultaneously during the #BLM protests back in 2020 ...

seems you limeys have found some balls

was the TL;DR response.

It would be fascinating to know if the jury accepted the defence arguments, or just acquitted out of bloody mindedness. Luckily if we don't know, neither do the prosecution. Which might lead to a few upcoming cases being reviewed.

DuncinToffee · 06/01/2022 11:13

Oops

..The EU is now allowing member states to levy zero rating on energy bills

..So the one brexit freedom Boris Johnson has identified, but is refusing to use, isn't even a brexit freedom any more
