Westministenders: This is not the Brexit we voted for

ListeningQuietly · 08/04/2021 12:06

UK Shellfish industry destroyed because our inshore waters are not clean enough
Welsh Ports on their knees because the Land Bridge has found another route
Horticulture seed producers lost all of their mainland EU customers

Antique dealers lost access to their suppliers
Small businesses being told (by UK Govt) to relocate to the EU to avoid red tape
Brits in the EU discovering that stopping Free Movement applies to them too
Northern Ireland in Unionist flames because there is a border between them and Great Britain, but not the Republic
And the UK has still not taken control of its borders

Brexit is shaping up as predicted, but none of those who voted for it seem to have what they wanted

@AuldAlliance

Interesting how even the Leave supporters mentioned in that article who suggest things might not be as simple as BJ intimated seem to focus on immigrants...
It seems like the bbc reality check line is that because there's not reams of literature in printed campaign material and because remain and leave didn't explicitly lay out a prediction for the exact economic settlement we have (including its problems) that it wasn't talked about.

Its bullshit. Utter bullshit.

Its making up criteria in order for it to tick exact boxes rather than acknowledging there was a campaign debate over the subject.

From a Tech site ...

www.theregister.com/2021/04/20/christianity_brexit/

In their recently published book, Religion and Euroscepticism in Brexit Britain, Brunel University academic Dr Stuart Fox and the University of Exeter's Dr Ekaterina Kolpinskaya investigate how religious beliefs in Britain influenced the vote to leave the EU.

Peregrina · 20/04/2021 12:02

The authors also reckon religion will influence the UK's local elections next month, suggesting that Labour's traditional support among Catholics has crumbled and "virtually all" Christian denominations in the country are now more likely to vote Conservative.

I don't agree with that entirely. I think what has happened is that the Anglican Church has seen growth on its fundamentalist/evangelical wing, and they are much like the evangelical right in the USA who tended to vote Republican. I also suspect that they are the sort who don't question, and haven't stopped to question whether Boris Johnson's party is really the party they think it is.

Peregrina · 20/04/2021 12:13

And of course, Church attendance has dropped off in the last couple of decades so it's mostly the elderly, who tend to be more conservative who still attend.

I know many Christians back in the UK and can't imagine any of them voting Conservative. Even my elderly church going, COE PIL wouldn't do it. They all have too much compassion for other people.
Peregrina · 20/04/2021 13:00

I know a lot of Church goers, and they are a very mixed bunch. Some vote Tory, but then some also exhibit some rather un Christian behaviour at times. So I don't think we can really generalise.

Waiting for the Kentish rebel song with the refrain

The M20, long a car park, be
A motorway once again

Doesn’t scan as well as the original though.

LostToucan · 20/04/2021 19:21

Sounds like Jonny Mercer has been sacked?

LostToucan · 20/04/2021 19:26

And the Briefing Room idea has been scrapped.

So £2.6 million well spent then.

Kendodd · 20/04/2021 19:32

Christian denominations in the country are now more likely to vote Conservative.

You would think Christians would be naturally left leaning though? Welcoming refugees and strangers (immigrants) wanting to provide well for the poor and disabled? They don't seem Tory values?

Peregrina · 20/04/2021 19:34

Allegra Stratton didn't last long in that job then.

Peregrina · 20/04/2021 19:44

Christian denominations in the country are now more likely to vote Conservative.

If so, this seems a long way from Labour owing more to Methodism than Marxism. But High Church Anglicans were always the Tory Party at prayer. I think it still has a lot to do with aging congregations.

I must admit i tuned into bbc1 at 5pm thinking I'd see the latest pm covid briefing.

Nope.

Flickered over to bbc2.

Nope

It was on bbc news but i thought the decision to axe the briefings was an interesting editorial one by the bbc.

I think we've had enough of politicians giving press conferences.

Not much. Don't stress it!

Is she another one Carrie doesn’t care for I wonder?
RedToothBrush · 20/04/2021 20:32

The press conference room was commissioned before the US election to mirror Trump.

It had been deemed successful by the Trump administration and at the time it was proving popular in the uk due to the pandemic.

Fast forward to April 2021 and covid is seemingly on the wane in the uk. People want to move on from covid and the press conferences hark back to that and to the Trump era which is history. And now no one wants to look like Trump.

So they've moved onto the next big thing. Stratton has gone to do something connected with climate change. The uk see the big upcoming cornwall conference as an opportunity to sell the uk to the world. And to to be seen to be taking the lead on climate in a changing era. Plus its increasingly becoming the new subject of interest - not just in the young but also the middle age and old.

Its chasing publicly and votes. Its pure populism.

LostToucan · 20/04/2021 20:37

Hence Johnson also chuffing over the Euro Super League nonsense (which seems like a safe bet as UK clubs are already backing out).

How long before we have to put up with brexit loons explaining that joining the Single Market and Customs Union is a great idea if we do it as a sovereign nation?

I was chatting to a colleague today about all things politics
and they said
can you prove this was discussed before the vote
and I was able to categorically say that it was
because our posts here are time stamped
