Apparently we need a tunnel. Just like we needed the £53 million failed Garden Bridge.

Nice little earner for anyone involved.

Lots of prepping going on at Sailors Creek Shellfish HQ today ready for the market tomorrow @ foodbarn.tregew
Plenty of mussels, oysters, queen scallops and hot AND cold smoked salmon.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Clearly selling out of a local barn is going to make up for losing the EU market.

When the market for shellfish in France and Spain disappeared overnight in March, Martin Laity and Tom Knights of Sailor's Creek Shellfish put their heads together and came up with a way to sell their produce and that of other local producers.

Clavinova · 03/03/2021 17:41

Oh, is that same Falcatch just fined for applying other companies’ food safety labels to its products?

That's unfortunate. The article says the company were fined on February 10, after a nine-month investigation that started in November 2019 - obviously didn't prevent them from exporting on Feb 10,12 and 18.

The article in your link is dated 6 December 2020 - so Covid, not Brexit.

Oh dear.

These "sponsored" stories really are quite desperate.

DGRossetti · 03/03/2021 18:10

@LEnferCestLesAutres

Seems the headline about forging a new relationship was - rarely - spot on for a Brexit story.
Peregrina · 03/03/2021 18:10

If Brexit was so wonderful, the facts would speak for themselves - there would be no need for Government adverts, or Clavinova's posts of 'this firm has managed to partially adapt'. It would all be firms/people telling us how they are quids in with Brexit.

I completely agree The degree of astroturfing on social media and now in the newspapers is really telling

Oh it’s definitely Brexit as well - if you bother to read the article.

AN IDEA born out of lockdown and Brexit has grown to fruition with the launch of a new food market in a barn near Flushing utilising local businesses.

"The idea really started on the day of Brexit result," said Martin "We started thinking long term about doing different things that's why I teamed up with Tom to form Sailors Creek Shellfish. I've had 35 years doing it and Tom's been in the game 14 years so we joined forces and put our heads together to think about different ways of marketing."

And the article is dated when the business was launched.

LostToucan · 03/03/2021 18:24

And to add the company was formed in May 2019, so well before Covid can be used as a convenient excuse.

prettybird · 03/03/2021 18:26

Talking about mixed up thinking, this tweet seemed to summarise reactions to today's testimony from Nicola Sturgeon Wink

I was musing earlier today that rather than seeing it as a failure of Scottish Parliament as Salmond and others have been intimating it is instead a testament to the fact that it is prepared to look at itself and learn Confused.

Can you imagine BoJo and his cronies going through this? Shock Even though they've infringed and continue to do so many norms of due process. Hmm viz: Priti Patel's bullying, illegal prorogation of Parliament, awarding of contracts without due process, explicitly saying that they were prepared to break a recently signed international treaty, to name just a few....Hmm

I actually meant loss of business was Covid - you quoted;

So you’re not denying that the business was set up directly as a result of Brexit now then?
LostToucan · 03/03/2021 18:47

And funnily enough one of the founders of Sailors Creek didn’t find sales during Covid much of a problem:

20th January
Sailor's Creek Shellfish, Flushing Brexit despair

He [Martin Laity] said even during Covid, up to the end of last year, they were selling record amounts of shellfish to France and last January was incredibly busy but now they had nothing.

“Last year in January was our busiest month, but even with Covid we were doing well. Brexit is a death sentence,” he said

“No way is it going to get better. All the laws and paperwork, it is statute, it’s law now there’s no reversing that.”

Clavinova · 03/03/2021 19:01

So you’re not denying that the business was set up directly as a result of Brexit now then?

The article also says they sell their shellfish to high end restaurants in London and the rest of the UK (probably not at the moment obviously) - sounds good to me if they sought out profitable new markets in the UK in anticipation of Brexit.

Not forgetting that you also posted;
Clearly selling out of a local barn is going to make up for losing the EU market - for an article dated 6 December.

Clavinova · 03/03/2021 19:06

He [Martin Laity] said even during Covid, up to the end of last year, they were selling record amounts of shellfish to France

Which is odd isn't it - because LostToucan's article says;

When the market for shellfish in France and Spain disappeared overnight in March, Martin Laity and Tom Knights of Sailor's Creek Shellfish put their heads together...

and last January was incredibly busy

Well it would be - pre Covid.

Clavinova · 03/03/2021 19:09

LostToucan's article says

Sorry - you posted both articles - glanced too quickly.

LostToucan · 03/03/2021 19:18

“Last year in January was our busiest month, but even with Covid we were doing well. Brexit is a death sentence,” he said

Clavinova · 03/03/2021 19:31

“Last year in January was our busiest month, but even with Covid we were doing well..."

It's a mystery then;
When the market for shellfish in France and Spain disappeared overnight in March...

I suppose we will have to check back with the company in 3-6 months time.

ListeningQuietly · 03/03/2021 19:35

Clavinova
Do you have any comment on the incoming shit storm from the WTO
because the UK is breaking the WTO rules
that were such a fab idea according to the Brexiters

Peregrina · 03/03/2021 19:35

...profitable new markets in the UK in anticipation of Brexit.

But there should have been nothing to anticipate - no need to find new markets - there were going to be no downsides but considerable upsides remember.

Of course it's good for a firm which has capacity to expand to seek new markets - but with Brexit being a sterling success they should have been able to sit back and do nothing - the people would come to them, not them have to go chasing for new openings.

Clavinova Do you have any comment on the incoming shit storm from the WTO because the UK is breaking the WTO rules.

I know that the WTO are reactive, not proactive - they only act if a complaint is lodged with them and the process can be slow. I also remember Leo Varadkar saying (in 2018?) that he was willing to be flexible on checks for 6 months or so.

But there should have been nothing to anticipate - no need to find new markets

That might depend if supplying a high-end London restaurant is more profitable than supplying a bistro in France.

I can't help thinking that some of these businesses have had fantastic publicity because of Brexit - no doubt their UK sales will increase dramatically. I wouldn't like to say which businesses though.
