Apparently we need a tunnel. Just like we needed the £53 million failed Garden Bridge.

Nice little earner for anyone involved.

Labour still want to ride the dragon.

Labour are treating the bulk of their supporters with contempt

All political parties do this. It's how we got here.

The second you twig that 80% of a demographic are going to vote for you come what may, you suddenly realise you just need to promise a few geegaws to the missing 20% and hey presto ! You're PM. Safe in the knowledge you can shit, shit and shit again on all those people who voted by rosette, not by keeping an eye on the ball.

That made me feel genuinely nauseous in an anxious way. This is a slippery slope and of course Matt Hancock will see nothing wrong with it.

Meanwhile Starmer, who I was so pleased at winning the leadership is losing all opportunity of positioning himself as a credible alternative. It's like some Tory mole is planted in the Labour strategy team feeding them all the wrong advice.

How can a GP practice belonging to an overseas company fit with reversing Lansley

WHY are Labour not shouting LOUD about this.

DGRossetti · 26/02/2021 16:34

WHY are Labour not shouting LOUD about this.

  1. If they did, who would know ?
  2. Maybe they have more important things to deal with ?
Bee0808 · 26/02/2021 16:39

Or maybe they've given up?

Seems like it to me

What are Labour dealing with at the moment?
DGRossetti · 26/02/2021 17:05

What are Labour dealing with at the moment?

Well if it's more important than Brexit or Selling England by the Pound, maybe we don't need to know ?

A casual glance of the more hardcore forums of MN suggests they are grappling with what pronouns to use for Brexit. After all, you need to be inclusive before anything else.

After that, they're probably working on what colour fire should be.

And I suspect their economic plans might involved massive deforestation. But I can't be sure on that yet.

DrBlackbird · 26/02/2021 17:13

Thanks for cheering me up DGR you're right that deep cynicism and sarcastic wit is the only defence left.

lots of extend furlough - but not why or what the better alternatives are

lots of support the NHS over COVID - but nothing about the impact of Brexit

The high street (as we know it) can't be saved. Anyone who thinks it can really needs to ask why we weren't able to "save the horse drawn cart" once motor transport was invented. Anyone who says it can is merely eyeing up a nice little wodge of public money they can feather their nest with.

Peregrina · 26/02/2021 19:25

It was depressing reading Chris Grey's blog spot and find that we are now stuck in a Brexit "It's all the EU's fault" loop. My hope is that the SNP win an overwhelming victory in Scotland - have a mandate for a Second Referendum which they win comfortably, which then puts the cat among the pigeons in the Tory party. This would force the debate to move on. Personally I suspect most Tories wouldn't mind Scotland leaving, but I doubt whether Johnson wants the break up of the UK to happen under his tenure.

It occurred to me that there is a reason why the Tories are allowing the May local, Mayoral and Police Commissioner elections to go ahead this year - it's entirely to milk a Covid vaccination bounce. Come a year hence and we will probably be on an upturn there but Brexit will still be with us and despite the Tory propaganda efforts people will judge by what they see happening, not what they are told is happening.

Now I know this is a politics thread. But looking at the photo of Carrie with the stroller, that child needs a haircut. Or at least a comb.

I do think that there are issues with Symonds. She had an affair with the then Foreign Secretary and neither her nor Johnson saw a problem with security arrangements for some reason. That alone says both their judgements are highly flawed. Not because of the affair itself but because of the going out of their way to lose the security.

The Press will run with this as an angle until the pair are out of No10. And for the same reason that dodging security was a bad idea, pissing off everyone in sight isn't a good idea because Symonds makes Johnson vulnerable.

Gove and Frost don't appear to get on well. However from reports they do seem to have a common enemy.

If thats true, then I doubt that they will be alone in this. And I also doubt it can be resolved and thats going to be an ongoing issue.

It is interesting that Johnson's financial situation is cropping up here again too. Its not the first time its been heavily suggested that Johnson's lifestyle is beyond his means.

As for Starmer yes.

Though its also interesting that this week its been pointed out that Sunak's economic policy was very similar to the one Labour had held up for the 2017 election and had been surprisingly popular. I've also seen comments about Northern Bonds and Covid Bonds from both parties. If you cast your mind back to Johnson's launch of his 2019 election campaign in Manchester his 'vision for the north' was almost identical to Andy Burnham's plan for Manchester which was much less well known and publicised. Johnson's launch went down a storm and left Labour in a difficult position with not a lot else to say.

Starmer is being constantly out manoeuvred and again i stress, is avoiding difficult or controversial subjects and trying to play things safe, whilst the party endorses all this very divisive identity politics.

Interestingly i am hearing (particularly from friends in a key northern marginal) people increasingly getting fed up of identity politics dominating agendas whilst simultaneously managing to spectacularly miss the point and actual problems.

Local elections will be interesting. I am not expecting Labour to do as well as they should be. Likewise I have my suspicions that the LDs may not do too well either.

I find myself finding it increasingly difficult to decide who to vote for tbh.

Starmer isn't giving me something to vote FOR. Voting Labour is only about voting AGAINST the Conservatives. And thats an issue because it affects turnout and motivation for campaigning for Labour in a big way. And unless Starmer decides to take a few risks and find some passion for people to get behind, he's not going to win the vote of the younger Gen Xs /older Millennials he needs. That 35 - 50 age bracket is still key - and has been the swinging vote in the last two elections. And I'm not convinced I know what Labour is currently offering it. There still isn't enough younger Labour voters to tip the balance and I'm not convinced there will be in 5 years time yet either.

Voting Labour is only about voting AGAINST the Conservatives.

Same here Red. We used to be LD voters but as they have completely lost their marbles, the next choice is usually Labour. I am obviously not going to vote Conservative but I can't summon up much enthusiasm for Labour either, despite thinking Starmer is better than Corbyn.

I need to look properly locally. A few years ago there was a political revolution here and the entire set of previously Conservative councillors were ousted by a local action group, who have been very good. I'm not even sure who is standing this time, must look in to it.

It happens a lot more frequently than you might think - some make the National websites, most don’t. This month there’s already been several reports, including anti tank mines, mortars, hand grenades and shells.

Since magnet fishing became a thing, pulling hand grenades out of canals is particularly common.
