Good King BBBBaBoris looked out,
on the Port of Dover,
There the shit lay round about,
Deep around the stopover;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Tho’ the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Delivering stuff for Yule.

“Bugger SAGE and stand by me,
We've all stuff that needs selling,
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good league hence,
The other side the EU;
Though relations maybe tense,
He's trying to get goods through.”

“Oh god I need another wine,
I have many crisis to consider:
We must tell them its all fine,
I must not be seen to dither.”
SAGE and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together;
Through the nation's sad lament
and really crappy weather.

“Sire, our plight is darker now,
And the covid transmission stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how;
To keep Tier 2 much longer.”
“Soon we can drop their wage.
And treat them all more coldly
In Britain's new chrony age
A time to rob more boldly.”

In their master’s steps they trod,
On the quest to get minted;
Each and every last sod
Needs to be fingerprinted.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
DWP claimants are processing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
God its all so depressing.

Then later next year, once the deal is signed, he can pull the rip chord, step down and hit the dinner circuit, and let some other poor sod deal with the mess.

I would be amazed if somewhere in the 1000+ pages (which lets remember are referring to "Netscape communicator" ... www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-55475433) there aren't a few little "gotchas" for the UK if that were to arise. Which MPs won't be able to spot (on account of not having time and being thick). And which I suspect civil servants won't flag up. After all, who'd dare piss on Boris parade ? He might set "the Patel" on them. Death penalty or now.

OchonAgusOchonO · 29/12/2020 17:34

So the ERG have managed to speed read the document and are supporting it. www.thejournal.ie/johnson-brexiteers-brexit-trade-deal-5312507-Dec2020/

Looks like they're not entering into the agreement in good faith though : In a statement, they said: “The ‘level playing field’ clauses go further than in comparable trade agreements, but their impact on the practical exercise of sovereignty is likely to be limited if addressed by a robust government.

“In any event they do not prevent the UK from changing its laws as it sees fit at a risk of tariff countermeasures, and if those were unacceptable the Agreement could be terminated on 12 months’ notice.”

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 17:44

But the EU might go and pull the rip chord on the UK. They now owe us nothing.

Johnson also might be dealing with the problem of Scottish Independence - but we will have to wait for May to see what the election results are first.

Biden too will be in Office - the dynamics will shift yet more.

Jason118 · 29/12/2020 17:47

The ERG are so brain dead that they think if we are faced with tariffs due to regulatory divergence and we invoke the 12 month clause, that somehow after 12 months we will be in a different place to the one we were in thus December. Don't they ever learn anything? We will always now be small and the EU will always be bigger. Therefore we will always have to suck it up. Still, it perpetuates their delusion and if it keeps the little lambs happy and quiet for a while it's no bad thing.

DGRossetti · 29/12/2020 17:49

Ripcord, surely ?

Indeed ... in fact that's probably what is going to happen (insert incorrect frog/boiling water analogy here). Give it a few years, and the UK will have bumbled on and just let things settle. Then there's a lever for the EU to gently keep us in line.

My $5 is on Irish unification, Scottish independence, and Gibraltar being returned. Before DS is 35.

Thank god we're rid of all those unelected bureaucrats running our country.

I think that now Biden will be POTUS and GFA seems protected and with Brexit happening at the same time it is a very good opportunity for the UK and USA to redefine their 'relationship'.

It really doesn't have anything to do with Boris as representative of the UK, because he isn't - boy done well really, way better than I expected. The good people of London elected him as their Mayor for 2 terms after all, so they must have had good reasons for doing that.

So the Biden Admin will be dealing with a UK Govt most likely headed by someone else. This bodes well I think.

ListeningQuietly · 29/12/2020 18:14

DGR
Even more reason then that the opposition parties should challenge as much as they can during the debating time
and then not lower themselves to voting either way on the charade

If they vote against it they are blocking the will of the people

If they vote for it they are enabling a Tory Brexit

Better to stand back and let the whole thing be on Tory heads

ASK YOUR MP TO ABSTAIN if you are able

DrBlackbird · 29/12/2020 18:19

Hate your definition of 'done well' is clearly worlds apart from my definition of done well.

dontcallmelen · 29/12/2020 18:21

I have emailed my MP asking her to abstain dunno if she will, she is a Labour remainer I’m also in London which may make a difference.

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 18:21

DGR how old is your DS?

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 18:37

I thought the lastest was that the ERG were minded to accept the Deal. Not to say they won't bellyache and say they didn't agree with it the moment it's passed.

All the more reason for all the Opposition to abstain.

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/12/2020 18:39

"done well" has many defintions really, some reliant on context and slang ie: boy done well.

It's reasonably irrelevant as in my view, averred to above, Boris Johnson will quite voluntarily resign within the next few months, so the Biden Admin will be dealing with the UK on a 'publicly' different level and most importantly, no axes to grind.

Which is very helpful and a good opportunity for all that good Democratic stuff to come to the fore, in whatever country democracy operates.

bellinisurge · 29/12/2020 18:41

Pretty confident that pandering to Johnson's wet dream about an increasingly mythical "special relationship " is waaaaay down the list of Biden's priorities.

ListeningQuietly · 29/12/2020 18:53

Joe I'm Irish Biden
will treat British Prime Ministers with the respect they deserve
Grin

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 18:54

so the Biden Admin will be dealing with the UK on a 'publicly' different level and most importantly, no axes to grind.

Even if the 'shape shifting creep' does a runner, those Tories who voted to amend the WA and thereby renege on the GFA will still be in Parliament and I doubt if the Biden administration will forget that in a hurry.

TheHateIsNotGood · 29/12/2020 18:55

Nothing like looking for the worst common denominator in everything. You can pop into the Arms if any here wants to entertain a reasonable discussion not founded on any of the political shackles you prefer.

I prefer to choose my views from the full spectrum of ideas out there - why limit myself to just one way of looking at things..

DGRossetti · 29/12/2020 19:05

@Peregrina

DGR how old is your DS?
Old enough to vote for a very long time, all being well.
veeeeh · 29/12/2020 19:11

For the average Joe or Josie, Brexit is now done, there is a deal, not much will change for them now they believe.

Labour should abstain now, but it really doesn't matter much to the mere mortals or the general body politic anymore.

There are Covid vaccines on the way, all looking good. Ahem.

ListeningQuietly · 29/12/2020 19:15

Labour should abstain now, but it really doesn't matter much to the mere mortals or the general body politic anymore.
It will at the next General Election
and that long game is what matters now

TatianaBis · 29/12/2020 19:19

To respond in Brexit Arms style 🤣👌🏼🥂🤦🏻‍♀️

Peregrina · 29/12/2020 20:05

Nothing like looking for the worst common denominator in everything.

The comment about Johnson by the incoming Presidential administration is a matter of record. As are how the Tories voted.

Don't just kid yourself that it's all going to be hunky dory because that's what Brexiters want. Fences will have to be mended and bridges built and Biden and his team have other priorities than putting a country first when that country chose to do something which they think is a mistake.

veeeeh · 29/12/2020 20:08

@ListeningQuietly

Indeed, that is why the Opposition should abstain IMV. What do you think?

But look, even if Labour decide to support, few may remember out there in the ordinary world at the next election. The key is for Labour to keep holding the Tories to account for the next four years for the many failures that may ensue.

I personally cannot see them having any moral authority to do this if they support, and do not abstain. Just my view.

Jason118 · 29/12/2020 20:12

The BArms has no discussions at all, I've looked.
