Westminstenders: a feature of the system not a bug

960 replies

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2020 16:02

Tests on the new queuing system in Kent have revealed that lengthy tail backs are a feature not a bug.

We should get used to them because thats normal not the system malfunctioning, but the planned system working as designed.

Today we have found out that there's no money left. The economy is fucked. And tomorrow we will probably all be in T3 with the Isles of Wight, the tip of Cornwall and inner Westminster the only places left in T1.

Christmas has apparently been 'saved' though. Well if you are dumb and lacking in functional brain cells its 'saved'. Trade for Christmas is already thoroughly goosed and indoor family gatherings may come with a extra side of covid. The BBC have done an epic job of 'doommongering project fear' style graphics on this wonderful subject.

Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly fucked.

Look after yourself squid.

A thing that particularly concerns me at present is the number of friends and acquaintances who are seriously ill.

I have asked myself more than once if they are more ill because their treatment has been delayed because of covid, which was done to protect the NHS - which in turn was necessary because the Tory government has spent ten years running down the NHS.

Clavinova · 05/12/2020 11:15

Do elaborate on your "opinion"
John Shirley knows his stuff.

John Shirley employs drivers from Eastern Europe and beyond - now these drivers will have to return to their home countries every 3 or 4 weeks - and stay in hotels paid for by the company on their rest days - instead of sleeping in their cabs for 3 months at a time.

"New European Union regulations could make life easier for truck drivers, who have seen their wages fall and touring schedules become busier than ever."

“Driving a truck used to be fun,” says André Bergner. “But nowadays I’m only doing it for lack of alternatives; the open borders have wrecked so much,” he adds while leaning against his 40-tonne vehicle."

"As reported by Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, Bergner is hinting at his fellow drivers from Eastern Europe who are on the road for wages a lot lower than his."

"According to a recent proposal by EU transport ministers, drivers need to stick to a 45-hour break outside the trucks after being on the road for six days. This means drivers would have to return home or stay in a hotel near their current location. In Addition, the proposal envisages the same pay for drivers operating in the same place, irrespective of their origin."

"According to DW, EU officials also want to end continual tours abroad lasting several weeks because these are set by making a 7-day break in the drivers’ home countries compulsory."

Eastern Europe and beyond
Perhaps I should say Eastern EU and beyond.

For nuclear medicines - we were told that the government has 6 month air freight contracts in place for radioisotopes etc but I will believe that when I see it. The refrigerated stuff like insulin I have no idea.

Peregrina · 05/12/2020 11:25

My DB is not in good health, and takes a lot of medicines each day. All of them are made elsewhere - some come from Italy, some came from Denmark are two places that I remember. There are probably a lot of people of his age on a similar medical regimen, and that is going to mean a lot of air freighting stuff to bring it all in.

Remind me why Brexit is a good idea.

The refrigerated stuff like insulin I have no idea.

September 2019;
"With a backup to the backup, insulin makers say they're primed for Brexit."

"Pinder Sahota at the world’s biggest insulin maker Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi’s Hugo Fry have rebuilt operations to withstand the most turbulent of events."

"The two companies told Reuters they had spent millions of pounds stockpiling millions of packets of insulin - used to treat diabetes - inside Britain and building new shipping and air freight routes."

"Their plans, formulated over three years"...
“We’re preparing for the worst-case scenario, the most extreme.”

"[shipping] routes that we’ve opened up are Denmark to Immingham and Netherlands to Immingham.”

"Novo Nordisk, Britain’s biggest insulin supplier, has tripled its warehouse capacity to hold 18 weeks’ worth of stock - 3.8 million packs that piled high would stand 12 times the height of the London Shard skyscraper."

"Eli Lilly of the United States and France’s Sanofi, the country’s second and third-biggest suppliers, have similar stockpiles."

[quote Clavinova]Erm, am I wrong, but didn't Switzerland have Freedom of Movement for EU citizens, even though they weren't in the EU? So Truss is boasting about how wonderful it is for a UK citizen to be visa free for 3 months, instead of for an unlimited time.

Quite a few conditions for EU citizens;

"EU citizens living in Switzerland longer than 90 days" -
"Any EU/EFTA citizen who wishes to stay in Switzerland for more than 90 days/three months must register with the Residents’ Registry Office in their Swiss canton. You must apply for a residence permit within 14 days of arrival in Switzerland. If you will be working, the residence permit doubles as a work permit. If you come to Switzerland as a student, with independent means, to retire, or to be with your family, you must apply for a residence permit for non-working purposes."

"You have to show that you have enough money to support yourself while you’re in Switzerland. In addition, you must have appropriate health and accident insurance. By law, you must take out health insurance with a Swiss health insurance company. Students also need to have proof that they have been admitted to a recognized educational institution."

Looking for work -

"Type L EU/EFTA short-term residence permit: for up to a year. If you have a work contract for less than 12 months, the permit lasts as long as the contract. (Remember, if you’re from an EU-25 state you don’t need a permit if you’re working for less than three months.) This permit is often used when coming to Switzerland to look for work."

Self-employed -

"you have to prove that you can support yourself financially and have adequate insurance cover."

www.expatica.com/ch/moving/visas/switzerland-visas-for-eu-citizens-443220/

Quotas on Romanian and Bulgarian workers up until last year;

Discontinuation of quotas for Bulgaria and Romania.
"Starting 1 June 2019, Bulgarian and Romanian nationals will benefit from full freedom of movement. For permanent residence in Switzerland, they must either be in possession of a Swiss employment contract or sufficient financial funds."

www.bdo.global/en-gb/microsites/tax-newsletters/ges-newsletter/july-2019-issue/switzerland-discontinuation-of-quotas-for-bulgaria-and-romania

Local hiring preferences -

"2017 - ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland will start phasing in a new system of local hiring preferences from July, as it tries to head off a clash with the European Union over immigration quotas."

"The new system requires employers to post job openings to employment offices in sectors where the jobless rate hits 8 percent or more, the government said on Friday. The trigger level falls to 5 percent from the start of 2020."

Breaking news:

This Swiss require EU citizens moving to Switzerland under Freedom of Movement rules to comply with the rules of Freedom of Movement.

You do know that those are the EU rules for of Freedom of Movement within the EU don't you?

SabrinaThwaite · 05/12/2020 12:00

Still wondering how John Shirley employing EU drivers affects the amount of new customs paperwork that will be required from Jan 1st?

Clavinova · 05/12/2020 12:03

You do know that those are the EU rules for of Freedom of Movement within the EU don't you?

So why is the UK described as a 'hostile environment' if EU rules require EU citizens to apply for a residence permit within 14 days and prove they have enough money to support themselves?

Clavinova · 05/12/2020 12:18

For nuclear medicines - we were told that the government has 6 month air freight contracts in place for radioisotopes etc but I will believe that when I see it.

"The Royal College of Radiologists"
"Update on radioisotope imports Friday 25 October 2019"

"Over the summer, the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) worked closely with suppliers to map radioisotope imports and ensure these products could be flown into the UK in the run-up to Brexit."

"DSCH has confirmed to that as of this week (week commencing 21st October) all imported radioisotopes destined for UK hospitals should be entering the UK by air."

"The Department has been running operational testing at East Midlands Airport to ensure smooth logistics as radioisotopes move from plane to lorry transport, and officials have assured us these tests have been completed successfully. They have also assured us that suppliers have catered for the need for more transport driver capacity coming out of the airport."

"It is reassuring that Government has recently been working closely and successfully with suppliers to implement contingency operations in the run-up to Brexit."

Bloody hell. You really can't see the difference between EU rules if you want to live in another EU state and deporting your own citizens to the other side of world? Shock
Clavinova · 05/12/2020 12:43

So, in Feb 2019, there was 6 months' worth of Irish cheddar in the UK. In March 2020, following a pandemic, there were issues with food supplies.

The same company;

November 2020;
"Cheese and butter producer Ornua Foods UK is investing £3 million at its Staffordshire Moorlands headquarters on the back of ‘strong growth’ during lockdown."

More TL;DR cut and paste from Clav. I'm sure they'll have to "pop out" soon so it'll pass.

Reading C&P dulls my wits

Completely. Clav, can you stop carpet bombing these threads with massive quotes, please?

Post the link. Let people choose to either click on it or ignore you. You’re making the thread unreadable.

Apparently we have difficulty deporting homeless EU citizens as well.

There was no need for FatCatThinCat to copy all of my post on Switzerland.

BigChocFrenzy's lengthy c&ps were not appreciated then? Is she allowed back?
TatianaBis' c&p on John Shirley?
DGRossetti needs to edit his c&ps?

One for you to ignore

I will - Femi repeats multiple false facts and disingenuous misquotes from twitter - I don't pay him much attention.

bellinisurge · 05/12/2020 13:03

Repeats false facts. Example please.

Articles from 2019 pre COVID are really irrelevant now
because the whole transport / medical situation around the world has rather changed since then.

Unless you have up to date reassuring links
please save the space on the thread for actual typing not C'n'P

John Shirley is one of the few people in Dover still filling out C88 and T2 and C5
he therefore knows better than any politician how it will be from January 1st

ListeningQuietly · 05/12/2020 13:10

And in other news
Fingers and toes crossed that this will work
it would be so positive for the whole world

That is what I was referring to. However Covid has changed the landscape and I have not heard anything further to those reports back in 2019.

I'm not going to trawl through his twitter feed now - numerous tweets and video clips trying to prove that Nigel Farage wanted to stay in the single market for example - all disingenuously edited (I took the trouble to find the original interviews) - where Nigel Farage said he didn't want to stay in the single market (or be the same as Norway) had been edited out.
