Westminstenders: a feature of the system not a bug

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2020 16:02

Tests on the new queuing system in Kent have revealed that lengthy tail backs are a feature not a bug.

We should get used to them because thats normal not the system malfunctioning, but the planned system working as designed.

Today we have found out that there's no money left. The economy is fucked. And tomorrow we will probably all be in T3 with the Isles of Wight, the tip of Cornwall and inner Westminster the only places left in T1.

Christmas has apparently been 'saved' though. Well if you are dumb and lacking in functional brain cells its 'saved'. Trade for Christmas is already thoroughly goosed and indoor family gatherings may come with a extra side of covid. The BBC have done an epic job of 'doommongering project fear' style graphics on this wonderful subject.

Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly fucked.

All joking aside, I read the link, and it's absolutely appalling that any country is planning this for anything other than dealing with a natural disaster, severe weather event etc. That the UK has basically done this to themselves because of intransigence and arrogance is actually shocking.

I suspect a great deal of this is theatre to scare the EU into thinking we are serious.

wewereliars · 03/12/2020 17:50

Well they're scaring me

mrslaughan · 03/12/2020 18:15

Tesco CEO on sky news talking about difficulty moving food across the boarders after Brexit. Calling for clarity on how the boarders for work..... so maybe people will start to pay attention (not the government that would be too much to ask... I mean the general public)

ListeningQuietly · 03/12/2020 18:25

Talking to a client today who import landscaping products from the continent
well they don't
but their wholesalers do

it still astonishes me how many people are oblivious of the fragility of the JIT supply chains

FFS
Baked beans are made with
imported tomatoes
imported beans
imported sugar
imported steel for the tins
imported paper for the labels
imported glue for the labels

Depressing when I have to admit that Mandy talks sense

TheABC · 03/12/2020 19:16

If we have a No-Deal in Jan, what do you think the fall-out will be like, by February?

At this stage, I have moved on from the will-they, won't-they deal to the political fireworks that will follow.

ListeningQuietly · 03/12/2020 19:44

TheABC
I admit to having no clue about what the aftermath of No Deal will be
because I've made the mistake before of presuming that the UK Government decision makers were sentient beings.

I know what should happen
I know what a rational decision maker would do
but I have NO IDEA what Johnson's team will do

Greektome · 03/12/2020 19:48

I suspect there's a plan, which involves them removing as much money from the UK as they can, as quickly as possible. They've made a good start.

LouiseCollins28 · 03/12/2020 20:16

@FatCatThinCat

That's Gavin Williamson's opinion by the way, not mine. I think as a country we're complete knobbers compared to everyone else.
That really does say it all. Nothing further need be added IMO

Who the fuck summoned Mandelson out of the seventh circle of hell? Envy

LouiseCollins28 · 03/12/2020 21:42

I’m not usually first to critise the current government so forgive me if someone has posted this before but this one has got me riled, one rule for one, one rule for the rest of us, totally disgusting IMO

its so Evan Davis and his husband can still weekend in France while he sucks up to Johnson on Radio 4

but yes
Brexit was ALWAYS about protecting the rich
and screwing the poor

LouiseCollins28 · 03/12/2020 22:16

I have to confess I haven’t listened to Today in something over 2 years, I used to be an avid.

I wasn’t really making a point about Brexit, more about a government who are looking after their own circle, which they shouldn’t be. I’d be angry about any government doing this, but the one we have is doing it, so I’m angry with them. schapps (or should that be Green) is a toad.

ReturntoSpamfritters · 03/12/2020 22:20

This. Then I'm presuming riots if there's not enough food in the shops. Then general strike? Would be nice. Then govt flees with all the cash and leaves us to pick up pieces OR doubles down, brings in army and police to keep order. Repressive regime? I dunno, we've not been in this situation before.
Pepperwort · 04/12/2020 07:15

Who the fuck summoned Mandelson out of the seventh circle of hell?

I think people need to start growing up and recognising that politics is not a good area for personality politics. Mandelson had the grace to be an elected MP at least. Does he still live here? If so he has the right to an opinion and it is sensible. As for Johnson, the question we clearly need to ask ourselves is what would be popular among the most vocal. This is where personality politics, instead of a focus on building and administering a country, has led us.

Peregrina you do realise that the need to build local talent is exactly what many of us have been saying about every economic sphere, as globalism enabled an exclusionary race for the an ever-decreasing circle of the most advantaged to take over everywhere?

GaspodeWonderCat · 04/12/2020 07:20

But would the Police and Armed Forces remain loyal to the Tory Govt? The Police have been shafted for last decade. The Armed Forces have just got a big wodge of money for big boys toys ... But every member of the Police/Forces has parents/family members who are going to be going through food shortages/medicine shortages/social unrest ...

Did I mention that I am tired of living in 'interesting times'?

Pepperwort · 04/12/2020 07:28

In a general socioeconomic collapse everybody looks to their own interests. Groups form, because groups are more powerful than individuals, and then break up, find interests elsewhere and reform. Depends if and where there are alliances, identities and collective interests strong enough to hold people together, as centralism and populism fails to do. Women will be in trouble as usual. Look to the post-Roman collapse.

Pepperwort · 04/12/2020 07:45

Believe it or not this is what the systems of distributed government set up post-world wars were deliberately designed to avoid! Scared? I’ve been scared for years.

TatianaBis · 04/12/2020 08:19

Mandelson is former EU trade commissioner as well as ex cabinet minister, he’s had very sensible things to say about Brexit and trade as well as the Labour Party. So has Alastair Campbell.

Whatever one might have thought of them at the time, it’s clear they’re way ahead of the current crop of Tory dolts.

DGRossetti · 04/12/2020 09:01

So, still no-deal then.

uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-bill-idINKBN28C28C

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain stands by clauses in legislation the government has admitted breach a divorce deal with the European Union, a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday, repeating they were necessary to provide a legal safety net.

(contd).

DrBlackbird · 04/12/2020 09:11

Having read Johnson's words... through his 'official spokesperson' that he is confident and comfortable that we would be OK without a deal I feel utterly confident too. I mean, why wouldn't that be enough to reassure anyone?

The really annoying bit will be when if there's a deal, the press will all be triumphant and fawning over Johnson's fantastic negotiating skills. Regardless of how crap the deal is or how badly trade is affected.

borntobequiet · 04/12/2020 09:15

Dr Angela Raffle on the Today programme talking about lateral flow tests, to be used when visiting care homes. (Some councils are worried about the reliability of these tests when administered/supervised by poorly trained staff.)
Dr Raffle gives a long and detailed explanation as to why they should be concerned, and finishes by baldly stating the the Government (specifically Johnson and Hancock) have made false claims. It's worth a listen, just before 8 am as far as I can remember (will be on Sounds a bit later I expect).

Peregrina · 04/12/2020 09:18

Peregrina you do realise that the need to build local talent .....

Yes, and even when I posted, I asked myself what had stopped our Premier league and Football Assoc from building local talent before hand? Short terms gains and £££ I imagine. It can't be lack of talent because there must be literally thousands of youngsters who play football. It wasn't the EU either.

DrBlackbird · 04/12/2020 09:22

And if there is no deal DGR will there be silence from the press on the repercussions? Probably...

DGRossetti · 04/12/2020 09:27

@DrBlackbird

And if there is no deal DGR will there be silence from the press on the repercussions? Probably...
All the press have been lubing the country up with talk of pizzas and making it feel like some sort of world Monopoly championship.

But unless I have missed something, there was a statement a while back from the EU that - regardless of negotiations - the IMB goes.

I suspect Team UK have "forgotten" that. Much like a class hopes a parent "forgot" they said they'd only let you on your xBox if you tidied your room. And that just as the congratulations are being doled out, someone says "...and of course you remove the IMB, as we mentioned two months ago ..."
