As expected he's fucking off and leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces in January. But it does look like he was eventually shown the door and left with a cardboard box. As he should have been months ago.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Johnson needing an image change, like the shape shifting creep he is, to one that fits more with the incoming Biden Administration. In other words hes got some serious sucking up to do...

... Meanwhile in Brexit land we are going into yet another final week of talks.

Many expect Cummings departure to signal 'the cave in'. The Eu say we havent moved enough and the uk say the EU wants us to do all the moving... Except the EU have done lots of moving. Barnier is still looking for a groundsman to level his field to play. We have yet to work out we aren't Canada and distance is important to trade.

Of course if we don't get a deal, that Pfizer vaccine in Germany that we want, might be hit with delays and extra costs we just can't afford.

squid sounds grim. We're all indebted to you and your colleagues all over the UK in ways we can never repay.
pretty fab colour! And impressive flowers. Smile

Do you think the new evidence from REACT will cause any changes to school policy around infection prevention measures? I'm surprised it's from that young an age group tbh, would have thought the teens were a more obvious driver, but I guess it's more likely totally silent asymptomatic in younger children.

Very interesting results from the REACT-1 study released yesterday. There seems to be a clear reduction in swab positivity at the end of October (during half term)- driven by drop in positivity in 5-12 yr olds. This is prior to lockdown, and seems an England-wide trend. t.co/3FR03G3Tcm

If they were following the science - yes re;schools. But it's politically difficult- so I doubt it.

DGRossetti · 14/11/2020 12:47

Interesting, given recent events ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-54906863

A recently discovered archive of previously unseen letters, drawings and poems by Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney - two of the great post-war poets - has been acquired by Pembroke College, Cambridge, which will put them on public display.

(contd)

(((( Squid ))))
Its offensive that you are not being given testing and full support.
But frankly this government are offensive.

Interesting that US states are starting to order lockdown type rules

  • they can see that after January 20th the whole approach to COVID will change.
Hopefully that sanity will rub off onto the UK's politicians as well I can dream

Interesting times re Cummings (and finally goings, hurrah!)
Agreed that it is better to have him inside the tent...
Johnson is such a fool.
Love the Carrie Antoinette reference :)

Felixstowe port problems being reported all over the place now, but the Guardian has some interesting information on what's causing the issues:

"Felixstowe is struggling to provide storage for 11,000 containers of PPE belonging to the government. The backlog is filling 3o% of the inbound container space at the port."

ListeningQuietly · 14/11/2020 16:49

Indeed
its always been the elephant in the room of imports
where to put stuff

Justpassingtime1 · 14/11/2020 16:54

Well, well well. First the House Of Lords, then Cummings
I think we are seeing the start of the Brexit turnaround?

TheABC · 14/11/2020 17:01

There's definitely some political theatre going on, combined with the mundanity of contracts, office politics and reality hitting the Brexit project like the ground hitting an egg.

Remember, Johnson is no Vetinari (for Pratchett fans). He is a showman and the show is now on, partly for the USA but mostly for his party. It's hard to overstate how alienated most backbench MPs are from the cabinet - and they are the people who can dislodge him. There's been a lot of talk about a "reset" and Johnson is on notice that it's "second chance time". If Brexit proves to be as bad as predicted - with four years to prepare for it - guess who will get it in the next from the electorate? I can't see Tory voters being impressed by vaccine delays due to Government incompetance. I would also being willing to bet my private island (!) that Murdoch will spin it that way, after turning on Trump.

TheABC · 14/11/2020 17:04

Also Flowers for @squid4. It means fuck all when you are facing such a bad time, but I want to support you and your colleagues, if there's a practical way to do so.

ListeningQuietly · 14/11/2020 17:07

IMHO the best thing we can, as individuals, do for the NHS is

  • stay healthy
  • avoid COVID situations
so that the resources are there for people who need them and we each individually help keep the R rate down

I've been selected for the random sampling study so shall be carrying out my self test and sending the kit back on Monday.
I presume it will come back negative
because I've actively taken steps to avoid infectious situations for months.

I also noted the weasel attempt to blame the public.

"Pre Brexit stockpiling".

Peregrina · 14/11/2020 17:19

It's no surprise Felixtsowe is logjammed. We ordered some furniture a month ago, which has to be imported and were told then that this was where there could be a hold up.

A casual skim of the news seems to suggest there are additional issues that have exacerbated problems ????
pointythings · 14/11/2020 17:37

TheABC the thing I recall about Vetinary is that first and foremost he was competent. A very far cry from what we have ruling us right now.

mrslaughan · 14/11/2020 17:45

It appears there is serious problems with Farages garage...... some are suggesting it's on a flood plain.... certianly looks like given this photo

ListeningQuietly · 14/11/2020 17:50

MrsL
Yup, that area is notoriously wet - drivers will NOT like having to wade through puddles to get to the toilets

TheABC · 14/11/2020 18:02

@pointythings, I sometimes fantasize about Vetinari's actions re: Brexit. I have come to the conclusion if he were in power back in 2016, the Brexit question would have been put to a committee (and may have come up with sensible parameters). He definitely would have a plan in place for the Leave vote winning.

If he were parachuted in, now? Fuck knows. I suspect he would be having a drink in the corner with Barnier and reviewing all the various deals written over the years. And laughing.

pointythings · 14/11/2020 18:15

@TheABC I think that if he were really in charge, the scorpion pit might come into play.
