As expected he's fucking off and leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces in January. But it does look like he was eventually shown the door and left with a cardboard box. As he should have been months ago.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Johnson needing an image change, like the shape shifting creep he is, to one that fits more with the incoming Biden Administration. In other words hes got some serious sucking up to do...

... Meanwhile in Brexit land we are going into yet another final week of talks.

Many expect Cummings departure to signal 'the cave in'. The Eu say we havent moved enough and the uk say the EU wants us to do all the moving... Except the EU have done lots of moving. Barnier is still looking for a groundsman to level his field to play. We have yet to work out we aren't Canada and distance is important to trade.

Of course if we don't get a deal, that Pfizer vaccine in Germany that we want, might be hit with delays and extra costs we just can't afford.

I spoke too soon about the food shortage thread. I think some sort of alert to the belligerent BeLeavers must have gone out, with special mention for some very diligent operation of Ctrl-C-Ctrl-V.

Strangely though, the ratio on the vote hasn't moved very much - those BeLeavers need to call for reinforcements, they haven't got anywhere near the halfway mark, which as we know means Total Defeat Grin

DGRossetti · 18/11/2020 17:06

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-11-18/brexit-creates-jobs-for-customs-staff-in-eastern-europe-india

U.K. companies are turning to cheaper overseas labor to complete their post-Brexit customs paperwork, creating jobs in countries such as Romania and India due to a shortage of trained staff in Britain.

(contd)

Surely we have to get the voting to 52% Wink

DGR
Its been one of the recurring problems that Government ministers and their advisers did not understand the basics of customs clearance
and still don't
the basic difference between a customs officer
and a clearance clerk
still eludes many

and were not even into the joys of looking at small vehicle trade traffic
which will screw things up far more effectively than many realise

Grin Right now it's around 65-35 (in our UnBeLeavers' favour!) which must count as an overwhelming-overwhelming-overwhelming-150% majority Grin

2016: Brexit will improve your lives
2018: There will be adequate food
2020: If there isn’t adequate food we plan to do fuck all

GetAMoveOnTroodon · 18/11/2020 19:11

Such a depressing conversation with two separate hauliers today. One said none of their European drivers were prepared to come to the UK in December in case they got stuck here and couldn’t get back. Other said price of deliveries is already up 50% because demand is so high and it’s only going to get worse over the next few weeks

OchonAgusOchonO · 18/11/2020 19:51

A Trumpian bigly majority.

An interesting take on the propsed ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2030

www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/18/uk-ban-on-new-fossil-fuel-vehicles-by-2030-not-enough-to-hit-climate-targets

The author, nor the New Automotive thinktank quoted, quantify the statement below in any way so its very hard to evaluate its accuracy just from the article, but it did jump out at me:

"Road transport is the single largest contributor to the UK’s carbon emissions, yet little to no progress has been made reducing transport emissions since 1990, according to the thinktank."

Seriously?! I think I'm correct in saying that selling leaded petrol was still widespread in 1990, and certainly it was still legal. The idea that all the changes we have been required to make to cars and driving in the last 30 years have had no impact is astonishing to me.

ListeningQuietly · 18/11/2020 21:43

Louise
Lead has nothing to do with Carbon emissions.
Gordon Brown cancelled the Fuel duty escalator
so the cost of fuel relative to inflation has dropped
and the number of miles
and the total fuel consumption
and thus carbon emissions have risen significantly

prettybird · 18/11/2020 21:45

Lead emissions or lack of is not the same as reducing carbon emissions Confused

The number of cars on the roads has increased significantly since 1990 Confused

LouiseCollins28 · 18/11/2020 21:51

I get all of that. Fuel consumption per vehicle, per mile has to be lower than 30 years ago surely. I'm sure you're correct though that total miles driven and total number of vehicles on the roads have risen substantially.

ListeningQuietly · 18/11/2020 22:19

LOTS more cars
LOTS more miles
MUCH bigger cars
roadtraffic.dft.gov.uk/summary

Lead has nothing to do with Carbon

LouiseCollins28 · 18/11/2020 22:29

Indeed. I can't help thinking the "bigger cars" trend is an increasing problem. Interesting DFT stats, will be a very telling comparison when they release the 2020 ones.

The British Grenadiers

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these
But of all the world’s great heroes
There’s none that can compare
With a tow, row row row , row row row
To the British Grenadiers

None of these ancient heroes ne’er saw a cannon ball
Nor knew the force of powder to slay their foes with all
But our brave boys do know it and banish all their fears
Sing tow, row row row , row row row
For the British Grenadiers

When e’er we are commanded to storm the palisades
Our leaders march with fuses, and we with hand grenades;
We throw them from the glacis about the enemies’ ears
Sing tow, row row row , row row row
For the British Grenadiers

And when the siege is over, we to the town repair
The townsmen cry ‘Hurrah, boys, here comes a Grenadier’
Here come the Grenadiers, my boys, who know no doubts or fears
Sing tow, row row row , row row row
For the British Grenadiers

So let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those
Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the louped clouthes
May they and their commanders live happy all their years
Sing tow, row row row , row row row
For the British Grenadiers

Can someone explain to me:
What the British Grenadiers have to do with the price of fish, and
Why JRM shouldn't get a pasting for quoting the song in 2020?

The tune is basically a reworking of 'Wilhelmus van Nassouwe' (aka Wilhelmus, the Netherlands national anthem) filched from the Dutch, and commemorates a 1695 British grenadier victory over the French fortress of Namur in Flanders during the Nine Years War.

Comments section says all you need to know about why this particular song may have appealed to JRM.
FrankieStein402 · 18/11/2020 23:53

Fuel consumption per vehicle, per mile has to be lower than 30 years ago surely.

Only if traffic congestion hasn't increased. The dangerous levels of air pollution around schools near A roads is evidence of increased pollution.

FrankieStein402 · 19/11/2020 00:00

Just listening to 'today in Parliament', someone complaining that business' dont know what rules they will need to follow in 43 days - actually its 29 working days - and for planning purposes you normally ignore Christmas week and the week before new year - ie we're talking 22 working days.

Phoenix21 · 19/11/2020 07:01

Is it me, or is the govt trying to control headlines away from the Brexit/Covid clusterfuck?

This week we’ve had
Electric cars
Military spending
Scotland devolution

I’ve not seen much govt discussion on B, C or C(ummings).

Admittedly these days I only get my information from you good people, the trump thread and twitter (inc news headlines).

SabrinaThwaite · 19/11/2020 07:25

Remember those 50,000 new customs agents?

Westminstenders: Going, going, cummings
Greektome · 19/11/2020 08:30

How about training up UK workers? Wasn't that half the point of Brexit?

Greektome · 19/11/2020 08:31

Particularly cynical in the light of all those Covid redundancies.

Add to this an arrest from the Birmingham pub bombings and the saga of Diana’s BBC interview. (Nb I’m not saying these are of no importance, just that they seem oddly deflectionary right now).
TheElementsOfMedical · 19/11/2020 09:45

just that they seem oddly deflectionary right now

These tactics of wordclouds of squirrels work - just look at the food shortage thread for an immediate example.
