Westminstenders: Going, going, cummings

As expected he's fucking off and leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces in January. But it does look like he was eventually shown the door and left with a cardboard box. As he should have been months ago.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Johnson needing an image change, like the shape shifting creep he is, to one that fits more with the incoming Biden Administration. In other words hes got some serious sucking up to do...

... Meanwhile in Brexit land we are going into yet another final week of talks.

Many expect Cummings departure to signal 'the cave in'. The Eu say we havent moved enough and the uk say the EU wants us to do all the moving... Except the EU have done lots of moving. Barnier is still looking for a groundsman to level his field to play. We have yet to work out we aren't Canada and distance is important to trade.

Of course if we don't get a deal, that Pfizer vaccine in Germany that we want, might be hit with delays and extra costs we just can't afford.

DGR
I am well aware that rejoining is not an option.
Too many EU members will flick their teeth at a UK application after the way our Ministers have behaved for the last 4 1/2 years

but a grovelling we will join the single market and obey the rules, how high do we need to jump?
would probably produce a rapid trade deal that got the shops filled again.

And frankly any UK MP who voted against it might be met with pitchforks if Christmas and New years are ruined

Pan2 · 17/11/2020 16:38

I think rejoining depends entirely on the economics of each state. IF UK trade would boost the Italian economy it would be agreed to in Italy, by the required govt ministers.

I mean, which country in the world would needlessly impoverish it's own country??

DGRossetti · 17/11/2020 16:38

Hmm

I'd much rather we had a 3 point plan, even if point 1 is "make a 3 point plan". The only way to neutralise the Brexiteer poison lies in "antithesis". So having plans, and sticking to them would be the biggest difference. And intelligence, of course.

Tanith · 17/11/2020 16:54

"I wonder about Tom Tugendhat or Tobias Ellwood?"

Have you taken your eyes of Hunt, who is definitely positioning himself and has been for a while?

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 16:58

Jeremy Cunt broke the NHS by not reversing Lansley.
And boy oh boy would Starmer bring that up every day.

It would HAVE to be somebody who was not in Johnson or May's inner circles

DGRossetti · 17/11/2020 16:59

One of the more informed corners of the internet. Sure some here probably follow

TonMoulin · 17/11/2020 17:05

I think the idea that we have brexiters and Remainers is out now. The U.K. has left the EU. This is done (and dusted). Trying to view and talk long those lines just antagonise brexiters who are still scared to see brexit escaping them. And pushes them and us towards a harder brexit.

The question is what sort of brexit are we going to get. The hard brexit or the soft version?
Does the government have a choice at all there?

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 17:08

At the moment the choice is between
Very hard
and
Extremely hard
because we are still in Transition Limbo.

I am a remainer in that I've not ever been shown the benefits of leaving
you cannot serve Sovereignty for supper

TonMoulin · 17/11/2020 17:17

LQ just leave me dreaming we could have a soft ish brexit!!,

Stomp away Wink

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 17:20

TonMoulin
Trust me, I would LOVE there to be a happy ending
but I just cannot see how we get to it from where we are.

Am enjoying the Phil Moorhouse video linked by DGR
(and LeClerc in France keeps reminding me to listen to Phil)

DGRossetti · 17/11/2020 17:28

I did like the suggestion that the EU would simply sub it's fishermen for a few months while the UK sinks into a no deal morass.

Meanwhile, I keep coming back to the determination by he Obama administration that brexit would actively harm US interests. (We can reflect on the fact that Cameron was in possession of that knowledge before the referendum later).

I'm curious as to how that was calculated. There's the obvious (allegedly nuclear equipped nation that is US ally undergoes radical shift in international relationships). But that's just something you deal with. Doesn't make it a "harm" to the US.

I can't see problems with Ireland being a "harm" either.

Assuming I am correctly interpreting harm as going further than "a bit of a nuisance". My neighbour playing music at 1:00am is a nuisance. My neighbour setting fire to his - and possibly my - fence is closer to harm.

Peregrina · 17/11/2020 17:28

Who exactly is Phil Moorhouse?

Having watched the video though, I can well believe that Johnson has promised contradictory things to the various factions, and now time is running out on him.

As for fishing - yes. Who was it who was blathering on this morning or the other day about how we would need to rebuild the industry? Which of those fishermen who sold out previously want to restart? An unlooked for advantage might be that no one fishes in UK waters, and this gives fish stocks a chance to recover.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 17:34

Peregrina
Not sure but he'd fit right in on these threads Smile

mrslaughan · 17/11/2020 17:58

DGR - I don't think I saw anyone answering your question about why the fishing industry is all of a sudden standing up and saying , the governments plans are going to destroy the industry?..... as I understand it , the plan for shipping goods to the EU involve you lodging your paperwork 48hrs (at least before shipping) . Unfortunately as the vast majority of our product is live or fresh. If it's not caught, you can't do a manifest - and fish stored for 48hours - well as you can imagine it's an issue.
Apparently Scottish fisherman are looking at Registering their boats in Ireland to circumvent this......I am not sure if that will work.

It's not like we haven't been yelling about things like this......

I have been busy all day , but just looked at Twitter and am amused to see that Johnson's comments with regards to devolution has made Wales see independence as the way forward.
I mean I knew he would be a disaster, but he really has surpassed even my expectations of completely fucking it up.....

DGRossetti · 17/11/2020 18:00

Who exactly is Phil Moorhouse?

No idea, but he seems to have a good grasp of affairs and picks them apart quite well.

Not quite our own "Beau" (by the way, followers of the Fifth Column friend might be shocked to hear the beards been trimmed ....) but there are certainly some points of reference.

bellinisurge · 17/11/2020 18:10

Beau has trimmed his beard!?

52andblue · 17/11/2020 18:10

@prettybird:

'I think Peregrina got it: BJ likes to set one group against another and has no sense of when and what is appropriate, other than giving himself the figleaf of a sense of authority hmm

So as a result and however much backtracking he does , he's handing out ammunition to the devolved nations, in particular Scotland but also Wales and NI, left, right and centre'

Yes, I see that.
I just didn't think he was quite that stupid (which perhaps makes me stupid myself as there's been plenty of evidence of idiocy from him!)

DGRossetti · 17/11/2020 18:12

@bellinisurge

Beau has trimmed his beard!?
Yup. With a video about why ...
TheABC · 17/11/2020 19:07

Shock if there's beard-trimming about, we are clearly in the end days.

tobee · 17/11/2020 19:13

They can't go for a Major type to replace Johnson surely? Been there, done that with May?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 17/11/2020 19:32

JC reinstated.

ListeningQuietly · 17/11/2020 19:38

@GhostofFrankGrimes

JC reinstated.
I'll wait to see the detail before commenting further
Zixxy · 17/11/2020 20:06

I am Irish born. Lived in UK for many a year, and loved it. A very tolerant and kind people IMO.

But spilling my beans now, this Brexit thing is just so disappointing in so very many ways. I doubt anyone realises the downsides now, only the jingoistic crap of the ERG types. They need culling.

So UK is out. I personally and with no vitriol at all am very sad about that. UK and ROI developed a great relationship together in the last few years, and HMQ was welcomed in Ireland with open arms.

Leaving Covid aside, I can't see a rapprochement happening anytime soon. Such a waste of all that has gone before now.

Feeling a bit meh tonight, as you can see.

bellinisurge · 17/11/2020 20:12

JC can fester in his little antisemitic corner and not be any real threat.

tobee · 17/11/2020 20:38

I was pondering whether he'll cause more harm in or out? Out and is he a martyr for the left? I feel he'd probably be more easily forgotten out but not sure.

Wish it had been more of a decisive Kinnock/Hatton moment.
