I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

Just watching Johnson's speech.
FFS you are not in the school canteen
his name is not JVT - he is a senior Government adviser and professional

DGRossetti · 20/10/2020 17:23

@prettybird

Confused Andy Burnham only became Secretary of State for Heslth in 2009, after the Staffordshire Hospital scandal had come to light and after the first full-scale investigation (carried out in 2008) and he was the one who launched a further independent inquiry into the care provided by the Trust Confused
I wonder if Clav and Louise have ever been seen in the same room together. Dredging up a Whatabout story is usually Clavs tactic.

Or maybe they are tag teaming ?

ListeningQuietly · 20/10/2020 17:25

Don't know about Andy Street's Brexit views but I remember him stacking shelves in my local Waitrose one Christmas season (standard form for head office staff to pitch in) and he was making a right mess of it Grin friends who worked there were wincing

QuentinWinters · 20/10/2020 17:27

Police must be worried about how to enforce this against the wishes of local leaders - they may not attempt it ?
Police forces police by consent i.e. they act for the public not for government. They are accountable to the PCC for performance (PCC can hire/fire the chief constable) and the Home Sec for the funding. The PCC of GMP is Andy Burnham. So I can't see the police enforcing these rules. Non-enforcement of restrictions makes it all pretty pointless to have tier 3 tbh.

He also managed to fail to get John Lewis (his old outfit) to save the Grand Central JL opened in 2016.

Why on earth do we have an army then ?

Also, don't bullets have a use-by date ? Surely better to off a few bolshie civilians than have to pay to safely dispose of outdated ammo ?

prettybird · 20/10/2020 17:32

As dh has just pointed out, Burnham is the only English politician who has successfully dealt with a pandemic: swine flu in 2009, when he was Secretary of State for Health.

As an aside, Nicola Sturgeon was Health Secretary in the Scottish Government at the same time Wink

QuentinWinters · 20/10/2020 17:36

Why on earth do we have an army then ?
Eh? Not sure what you mean?
The principle of policing by consent is really important (and why we have so many police forces) but not many people understand it.
The army work for the government. God help us if BoJo decides to send them in to enforce this.
Scary times.

SabrinaThwaite · 20/10/2020 17:39

Is this right? Pippa Crerar reporting that Johnson has withdrawn the £60m funding for Manchester and cut it back to £22m?

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 17:41

Yes.

They are going to try and pick off individual councils within greater manchester one by one instead.

Cos no one in greater manchester commutes in a different area to the one they live in.

In this case (unusually Smile) I mean exactly what I say.

I bet Boris has a tattoo saying "Tonypandy" somewhere.

colouringindoors · 20/10/2020 17:44

Angry £22 million instead of the original £60 million offered?! All because Burham asjed fir £5mill more?! Utterly shameful!

colouringindoors · 20/10/2020 17:45

apol, rage typos

Sostenueto · 20/10/2020 17:47

Well u can bet that the Tory led council's will get a lotta lolly and the labour ones won't in Manchester. If that happens ( and it will) there is going to be such outrage believe me!

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 17:47

Simon Jack @bbcsimonjack
Biz leaders describe "terrible call" with PM & Gove. "Unbelievable disresepectful to concerns of business". PM said COVID had created "too much apathy in business" to get ready. No update on state of talks. Gove described process as "like moving house"....1

..a bit of disruption but soon get used to bigger better house". Another said -"more of a lecture". Small business groups pressed for transition vouchers to pay for extra prep which Gove agreed to take up with HMT. Another "Felt like a box being ticked - "yes we've spoken to biz"

King Boris.

And Burnham literally found out via social media Angry

Peregrina · 20/10/2020 18:07

How can we show our support for the people of Greater Manchester? Don't forget if Johnson gets away with this, he will try it on elsewhere - the only people he is interested in is himself and a few cronies.

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 18:10

My principle memories of the guy are that he was in charge of health during the Mid Staffordshire hospital deaths scandal.

You memory is terrible (or rather your googling skills are), because Alan Johnson was health secretary at the time.

Maybe they all look the same ?
the80sweregreat · 20/10/2020 18:32

Do a fund raiser for Manchester ; someone in the media needs to pick up on this.
The red nose charity did one for the NHS , someone needs to do one for the people who are being screwed over.
Come on you footballers and other celebs!

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 18:37

Right wing social media is desperately trying to smear Burnham over the Staffordshire scandal, so I think we all know where Louise gets her "memories" from.

I've never been a particular Burnham fan tbh but quite honestly my folding chair is now planted firmly in the Burnham camp and I have my supply of popcorn at the ready.

QueenOfThorns · 20/10/2020 18:56

I’m absolutely fuming this evening. We asked for £5m more when the offer was £55m and so they’re giving us £22m??? I don’t know why I’m shocked at this, but this is like a toddler having a tantrum. What are all the people affected by this going to do? Shock

So glad I voted for Andy Burnham, he’s done an amazing job uniting this region and we need an example of proper leadership in this country at the moment (by country I mean England, obviously).

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2020 18:58

Smears seem all this Tory govt know, when they see a problem

Shame for those of us who remember the pre-Thatcher Tory party
Even the old bag herself had a mostly talented govt and was very competent herself if you like the ruthless approach
(until the later years, when I think her judgement deteriorated several years before the Alzheimers was diagnosed)

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2020 19:05

I fear that incompetent govt in the Uk (and elsewhere) will fall back on authoritarianism

and turn a crisis of public health into crises of democracy, national divisions and civil disorder

However, red and I were considered ridiculous by some on another thread for our fears of what govt reaction to Covid might do, not just Covid itself.

Too many at the extreme positions - the denialists and the doomsters - want an authoritarian approach by the govt to force their particular wishes on everyone else

BJ is incoherent enough that both seem to think he would choose to enforce their particular pov
They don't seem to realise that he could U-turn any time and use force against them the next day

GhostofFrankGrimes · 20/10/2020 19:10

Meh. Tories gonna Tory. I’m old enough to remember the “managed decline” of Liverpool.
