Westminstenders: PreGrades (Minority Report comes to the UK)

In Aug 2020, London, DC's prototype 'PreGrades' launched from the education department stops plebs before they go to university, reducing the social mobility rate to zero percent. Social mobility is predicted using specialized mutated humans, called "Teachers", who "predict" grades by marking shit lots of course work and exams over a period of years. Would-be social climbers are knocked down in a computer algorithm which distorts reality and hits the disadvantaged hardest. Central government is on the verge of adopting the controversial program nationwide by applying it in all departments from the DWP, the Home Office, the Department of Health and the Department of Justice to predict benefit fraud, getting sick asylum seeking and crime before it occurs.

DC's vision of the future is based on excellence being genetically ingrained into the elite but he must sell this vision to the unsuspecting public in a series of public votes which rely on the idea of the 'undeserving'. Little do they know that they too will be the victims of this plan until a mysterious bug appears and only the wealthy and well connected are able to get hold of adequate PPE and they are no longer able to buy bog roll nor retire to Spain as they had previously and endless queues for pizza form near Kent.

LQ : I'm sure that most but not necessarily all 6th form colleges will use discretion: but the sad fact is that discretion will be required Confused

....as opposed to the young people automatically continuing on at the school that knows their capabilities and being able to sit the "required" missing exam(s) alongside other subjects (or even NVQs). Most of our secondary schools also have good relationships with local colleges of FE and some of the young people may go there for a particular subject/vocational qualification (although I recognise I'm speaking from a privileged urban perspective, where it is feasible to get to a local college of FE from school Wink)

DGRossetti · 16/08/2020 14:26

Not with a bang, but a whimper ...

DGRossetti · 16/08/2020 14:28

discretion is a way of saying discrimination with fewer letters ...

ListeningQuietly · 16/08/2020 14:28

TBH the 6th form provision in this county covers all bases
BUT
they only have enough seats for one cohort of children.
If loads of older ones are coming back to retake they cannot cope

I must admit I was thinking that the 6th form/FE colleges would honour places anyway regardless of the grades, but for some who were deemed to have failed, a chance at a proper exam might help them out.

I am pretty sure that any competent teacher can quickly work out where a student's ability really lies. I know some local secondary schools used to wait until half term before setting for maths, because they couldn't rely on SATS results.

Pepperwort · 16/08/2020 14:44

I also bought on a hill. The Netherlands has one of those nervous-jokes-that-aren’t-jokes about relocating their entire population down into Germany. I like the dutch, they get stuff done Sad.

ListeningQuietly · 16/08/2020 14:47

Peregrina
Peter Symonds always has more applicants than places so has always been strict on the GCSE rules
BUT
Places like City College in Southampton only have capacity for a few kids to be retaking their GCSEs
and if the algorithm goes wrong there could be LOADS

at the same time as they are trying to do social distancing
at the same time as kids who would have gone into retail jobs are going to stay at college Sad

Peregrina · 16/08/2020 14:52

But they won't be able to rely on the GCSE rules if the A level debacle is repeated. Theoretically there will be some admitted with grades that they haven't earned, who might not be able to cope with the work and others refused places who could easily cope with the work.

I would hope that colleges would have the gumption to look at the CAGs and teacher assessments before withdrawing places.

ListeningQuietly · 16/08/2020 15:19

TBH the A level colleges will cope.

My concern is far more for the "left behind" people who have been unsupported over the last few months.

Now that its abundantly clear that the NMW is utterly ignored by a lot of employers (clothes manufacture, food processing, farming)
their options and horizons are narrowing.

Its raining today so they will stay home
but they are getting angrier
next Thursday needs to be planned for by competent people

not a skill so far demonstrated by this government

Peregrina · 16/08/2020 15:28

Yes, well - they either vote Labour or don't vote at all, so why should the present Govt. give a damn about them? If they start rioting, they can be locked up.

I know I am horribly cynical.......

ListeningQuietly · 16/08/2020 17:03

You are all individuals Grin

TatianaBis · 16/08/2020 17:43

@yoikes

tatiana We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Perhaps students from schools/colleges that provided decent online provision will be fine. Sadly, that doesn't apply to my ds1 nor thousands of other dc around the country. Ds1 is a conscientious student and has been working/revising hard over the summer hols. He still had 4 months of no/patchy provision. I think some kids have just given up and written this academic year off. I know several of his peers have left college.
My feeling is that with humanities you can catch up the work by reading and doing the notes yourself from the textbooks. New topics are variations on what you’ve done before.

I did a humanities A level from scratch in 10 weeks.

It’s more problematic with sciences for example - if there’s a topic that hasn’t been covered - it may need to be explained by a teacher (unless you’re super bright and you can teach yourself from the text book which some can).

TatianaBis · 16/08/2020 17:44

Yes we’re all individuals.

Er I’m not.

Shh.

When that actress became the mayor of Aberystwyth she did a free open air showing of the film and then walked on stage to say
right, you've seen me in the buff. no more jokes

and according to friends there she was very good as mayor Smile

The government is in danger of turning "probably won't vote for you, or at least not until I'm much older" to "definitely won't ever, ever, ever vote for you bastards"
TatianaBis · 16/08/2020 17:59

😆

TatianaBis · 16/08/2020 17:59

I was laughing at Listening’s post. ^^
