RedToothBrush · 04/08/2020 18:10

The government is telling pharmacists and drug manufactures to stockpile drugs ahead of the end of transition on 31st December.

In the middle of a pandemic.

What could go wrong?

Flowerful - you don't have to agree with everything that a politician does to admire a speech - or some of their policies.

Writing off a politician because you disagree with a couple of policies is how we ended up with Boris., and possibly why Jacinda may not win the election in the UK

mrslaughan · 13/08/2020 17:36

Sorry - brain fried , Jacinda is looking to win the election in NZ , not the UK.

Taswama · 13/08/2020 17:42

If only we could have Jacinda in the UK!

Who was the WME regular who used the hair on fire analogy ?
AuldAlliance · 13/08/2020 17:56

Is hair on fire not BCF's analogy? One I particularly appreciate.

borntobequiet · 13/08/2020 18:43

Hair on fire might be The Elements, possibly.

While reading the IDS 'small print/whoops!' article on Politics.co I spotted this in the corner of my eye.
www.politics.co.uk/comment-analysis/2020/08/06/forget-about-masks-the-real-covid-culture-war-has-only-just
The most visible problem, of course, will be economic. Returning to normality doesn't simply mean going back to pubs and restaurants, but also workplaces. Significantly, nobody is being forced to go to the pub, but some employees are being forced back to their jobs – even if they consider them unsafe. Hundreds of thousands of people with health risks or anxiety are now facing two unenviable outcomes: a situation where they cannot return to economic activity while their colleagues are, or where they are in fact dismissed from work altogether.

The former will breed a two-tier society where people are, through no fault of their own, trapped in a form of work paralysis, denied the pleasures and rewards of their jobs, and prevented from progressing with their careers. The latter will be a form of outright – yet lawful – discrimination, and could bring rapid poverty. Both will create not only a social stratification but also a monetary one, where those with fewer health problems or anxieties also end up richer and with better careers. Economists have talked of a K-shaped recovery, where some groups quickly rebound while others move in the opposite direction.

Welcome to the world of women of childbearing age, Jonathan Lis, the world where those who bear babies end up poorer, denied advancement in their careers, and if you are single and a mother, outright poverty.

There is a part of me that wants to tilt my head to one side and say, 'Cry about it'. It's as if the author has never heard of the Mommy Track.

flowerrful · 13/08/2020 19:16

It's not just a couple of policies though. It's absolutely fundamental. Would you want to live in a country where an actor who is acting someone racist (probably in a play which does that to show what a bad thing racism is) can get arrested and imprisoned? Where if you share your opinions on religion with your (non-religious) teenage child in private they can report you to the police and get you arrested? Where laws for encouraging the participation of women in management define women as anyone who says they're a woman? And that's just the beginning.

flowerrful · 13/08/2020 19:17

I haven't even bothered to mention the SNP wrecking the education system, and all the other disastrous and costly mistakes they've made.

Sostenueto · 13/08/2020 19:24

Dgd got into Kings College London thank goodness!. She got downgraded from teachers grades ( CAG) but still had plenty to meet offer and insurance ( which was higher than firm! Bristol)

ListeningQuietly · 13/08/2020 19:28

Has that Scottish legislation gone through or is it just at the proposed stage?
Just that lots of kite flying goes on

ListeningQuietly · 13/08/2020 19:29

@Sostenueto
CONGRATULATIONS to your DGD
so glad it all panned out OK

Jason118 · 13/08/2020 19:29

I'd divorce Nicola and marry Jacinda in a heartbeat Smile

yoikes · 13/08/2020 19:30

Huge congrats to your dgd sos
She has had so much to deal with and then Covid-19 too...you must be very proud x

mrslaughan · 13/08/2020 20:09

Hugest congrats SOS

AuldAlliance · 13/08/2020 20:19

Well done to your dgd, sos!!!

My post with the s-word in has remained up, so you can relax about accusations of male privilege, DGR

Sostenueto · 13/08/2020 20:27

Thank you so much all of you♥️
The journey to school was fraught because UCAS track crashed within 5 minutes, school had not sent email with grades so we had 40 minute journey worried sick! So glad she got in but her amazing well earned grades downgraded but at least they were very high to start with. ( Still high) Many of her friends were not so lucky and top unis were asked to be lenient but some top RGs were not!
Think this article explains. Small cohorts likely most independent schools of 15 or less were allocated their grades using cags and not so much rankings. They received a 5% rise in Top grades large cohorts like my dgds school only got 2%. (State school). But we knew that would happen anyway it was so obvious it would. Dgd not going to appeal because a) the school won't b) you have to pay for it. 3) it will take too long and would lose your place by the time they sorted it. 4) she got top RG uni and course she wanted so what is the point. I'm sure employers in the future will value her degree from said uni more than what her A levels were!

JeSuisPoulet · 13/08/2020 20:39

Jason, you're going to get a reputation Wink
Sad to say my dad appears to think Trump has a point re flushing loos Shock. We had a discussion earlier and I did suggest that buying cheap loo roll does mean you use more... however IMO the idea is that it's business driven rather than any faux pretence of giving a rats about the climate.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/08/2020 20:45

"Hair on fire" was invented by Elements but I have quoted it several times as it is excellent

mathanxiety · 13/08/2020 20:46

These are exam grades, not a finite amount of quantifiable items like apples to be shared amongst a set number of people.

The idea of a finite quantity that cannot be increased, aka 'the whack-a-mole theory of wealth distribution' is the operational assumption of the vast majority of people in the UK. It forms the basis of the entire political system.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/08/2020 20:47

Congratulations to your clever DGD, sos 💐
Thank goodness she wasn't robbed of her place

JeSuisPoulet · 13/08/2020 20:52

Yes and congratulations to all mini-enders!

BigChocFrenzy · 13/08/2020 20:54

The SNP and NS are far more competent than the UK parties,
which is an assessment I can separate from my personal opinion that Scotland would be better remaining in the UK

I notice that fervent Unionists throw any smear they can find at the SNP, instead of just defending Unionism
So my opinion of Unionists has fallen, even though I still think "better off in"

Also, after seeing so many GC feminists fawning on the far right, they've lost my support
Stopping the far right is priority #1 - "hair on fire"

.... Yes indeed It is why so many people are so fierce in denying things to others less fortunate
