RedToothBrush · 04/08/2020 18:10

The government is telling pharmacists and drug manufactures to stockpile drugs ahead of the end of transition on 31st December.

In the middle of a pandemic.

What could go wrong?

I noticed that headline too on the BBC for the reasons that people have mentioned.

The article explains (and Sky has done the same) that part of the reason is that large numbers of people have withdrawn themselves from the workforce, hence are technically not unemployed. Confused

So the hostile environment at the DWP has worked Angry What's the point in signing on for JSA if there are no jobs, you are "over-qualified" but you just get hassle to apply for anything and everything yet you have sufficient savings that you don't get any money (after the 6 months contribution based JSA) anyway Shock. I've been in that situation. (Actually, I didn't get that far: I just signed off even though I didn't yet have a job).

Very interesting article DGR .
I had to read your comment about dictionaries and thesaurus 3 times to work out what could be funny about the word!
I agree its attitude and curiosity to learn. If your parents don't have that and shut you up when you ask difficult questions, I guess you stop asking quite quickly.

prettybird · 11/08/2020 12:11

That's great news about your ds Yoikes Thanks

He's a credit to himself Star - and to you Thanks

IDS in particular has transformed his U-turn into a car crash. He praised Boris Johnson's article exulting the withdrawal agreement and ridiculed the idea of debating the agreement at length on the grounds that it had been examined in detail already, but now says bits of it were "buried in the fine print" – to the tune of a £160 billion liability for the UK.

Sorry forgot to refresh the thread. I meant the sugar article.
Some people may have 'withdrawn themselves' as working when the schools are closed was basically impossible?

Speaking of not doing detail

Thank you pretty ☺ I'm super proud. He really is a fine young man even though I say so myself

He is a foodbank volunteer and a very good friend to his mates...he is one they all come to for advice (!) He also tutored most of them through their history gcse ☺ one girls mum came up to me on results day last year and said "xxx got a 6 thanks to xxx!"
He is a far better human being than I am!

BigChocFrenzy · 11/08/2020 12:59

Well done to MiniYoikes
Brilliant that it's down to his personality;
that young man could go far - and we certainly need more talent in the HoC and govt too, all parties

prettybird · 11/08/2020 13:00

It's wonderful when our dcs start to turn into fine young people and get recognised as such. Ds won a sporting award recently which, once it went up on the public website, I shared on my own FB timeline with a "proud mum alert", but also said it was good to see his hard work recognised. They said he was "one to watch for the future" Grin (I'd post it on here if it wasn't too outing even though his surname is different to mine Wink)

yoikes · 11/08/2020 13:04

That's fantastic pretty congrats to your ds x

Is Stilton cheese even popular in Japan?

So why so obviously say one thing a few months ago and the opposite thing today?

The answer is obvious: they didn’t read it.

AuldAlliance · 11/08/2020 13:49

All power to these DCs' elbows.

prettybird Don't worry about the odd insertion of my name. A lot of people have trouble understanding me... Wink

DGR Your parents sound quite amazing.
Cutting library services is such a good way to prevent people expanding their knowledge and honing their decoding skills. That way they can be blinded with bollocks about how you're saving stilton when you're actually driving the country into the ground.

Poulet Belatedly: I'm so pleased for you about your date. After an extremely difficult marriage, I'm very reluctant to get into another relationship (not that there is much chance of that, what with CV on top of everything else).
I will vicariously cheer you on from the singles' sidelines Smile.

Right, back to work. 37° heat not conducive to anything much...

https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2020/07/18/brexit-is-the-politics-of-continual-disappointment-in-pursuit-of-a-new-despair/

Brexit is the politics of continual disappointment in pursuit of a new despair
that can be blamed on anyone but a Brexiteer.

This is the politics of modern populism.
And there is no point seeking to constructively engage with it,

because it will deny any and every position it ever held if it suits it to do so

Iain Duncan Smith has spent days ranting about the Brexit Bill. But this video proves he didn't even want to debate it

https://www.indy100.com/article/iain-duncan-smith-brexit-debate-parliament-9658836

"if there is anything about this arrangement that we have not now debated and thrashed to death, I would love to know what it is”

And where is the media that holds him to account ?

Once, at least the BBC would have. But since they've sold their soul to the devil, there's nothing.

DGRossetti · 11/08/2020 14:32

Quite upset to discover Britain no longer has a National Cheese Board.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/uk-japan-trade-deal-stalls-over-trusss-stilton-demands/11/08

...
Britain sold £18 million of blue cheese – mainly Stilton – around the world last year, but only £102,000 worth to Japan, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
...
UK government figures suggest that a trade deal with Japan might add 0.07 per cent to Britain’s GDP in the long run, compared with the loss of 5 per cent of GDP growth associated with the UK leaving the EU single market and customs union.

(contd)

I did query the use of "per cent" rather than the symbol, but have to agree with my initial instinct that it's the only way to make zero point zero seven in any way impressive.

(Drifts away ina daydream of enticing Iain Duncan Smith to invest his billions in a bank account bearing 0.08% interest ....)

Peregrina · 11/08/2020 15:54

The answer is obvious: they didn’t read it.

And they forgot that it's now an international agreement, which you don't just scrap if you find you don't like what it says.

Well, by publicly bleating about it, IDS has told the world to beware:Britain.

Unlike the US, which has a degree of protection from a rogue president, the UKs safeguards, being crap unwritten aren't any use against a doggedly determined division of dim dipshits as Boris and his boys.

I

quiteathome · 11/08/2020 17:02

For goodness sake

When people who are responsible for the lives of millions of people use the excuse 'did not read it' for something that is so important.

It is ridiculous.

If you have this excuse in a proper job you would be sacked
