Westminstenders: Operation Shock and Awe

The government is launching its get ready for the end of transition campaign which has been dubbed a 'shock and awe' campaign.

In this campaign we will learn all about what Brexit means and what amazing opportunities lie for having increased customs and borders, beaucracy and increased costs. Bet you are all really excited and looking forward to this.

We will also get a 'Farage Garage' in Kent to cope with these wonderful opportunities in traffic jams. This will be something that businesses throughout the country will be super excited to plan for in their socially distanced Zoom meetings or across warehouses with their face masks on. And banks will be delighted to see an uptick in applications in CCJs and debt reconstruction plans.

It will be a super fun time for the under 30s who have zero hours contracts, worked in retail or hospitality. Or should I say 'worked'.

Meanwhile the right to a jury trial has been binned due to 'long covid delays' which are shorter than they were several years ago. The NHS isn't getting the funding it expected, and waiting lists are longer than ever with no way to clear them. The plan to build more hospitals seems to have disappeared with the Nightingales. Many councils are about to go into insolvency and be taken over by accountancy firms. The civil service is being dismantled and conservative loyalists with no experience being put in charge of important functions of state. Communications with the press are being 'streamlined' to make them incredible of holding power to account and only able to repeat government public announcements.

Anyone looking forward to Christmas? When you write a letter to Santa remember to add 'visa application form', 'a sleeping bag for use at Dover', 'tinned tomatoes' and 'packets of seeds to grow your own' to the list.

Brexit fatigue by 2019 and the misguided view that johnson could make it all go away.

Peregrina · 24/07/2020 21:51

Yes, Brexit fatigue was certainly a factor. Maybe also the belief that it won't be as bad as feared. Why people believe a liar like Johnson though is beyond me.

I think the issue with JC (from a life long labour voter), was that he couldn't portray himself as a capable leader to the non believers. IIRC a poll of labour policies before 2019 showed a lot of support amongst voters, but when JC was added in, support declined. As a leader he was shit I'm afraid.

mrslaughan · 24/07/2020 21:59

Ghost - I am not saying that didn't happen - and that may have effected labour supporters, but plenty rejected him for a whole host of reasons.
I wouldn't say I am of the group that thinks he should duck off to the allotment as he's an MP and his constituents still have faith in him. However he keeps picking his head up and undermining the new leadership - and that I have issue with.
I would have quite happily voted labour to keep Boris out, but I am in pig in a blue Rosette territory so voted for the ex Tory Mp in the hope that he would get in as an independent. Unfortunately that didn't work..... he had been a good constituent MP and we now have a completely useless Tory - who is also still a councilman in Essex...... so not surprisingly we now have no representation..... he doesn't even bother to answer letters.
I would love to see the UK move to PR - but that's never going to happen with the Tories- and I am not even sure with Labour.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 24/07/2020 22:09

JC is entitled to defend himself against all the shit that has been slung at him. If the right of the party dont like it then they should have thought of that before they started undermining him. But of course they thought simply installing a centrist leader would be enough to turn the electoral tide. How wrong they were.

People continue to support JC because he represents social democratic values. Something neither of the 2 main parties currently do. If the left have been disowned by Labour dont expect them to remain politically homeless (now where have I heard that phrase before?).

Peregrina · 24/07/2020 22:18

I keep hoping that Johnson will destroy the Tories.

If only Patel could have done something about the ‘terrible injustices’.

Oh, wait...

I can’t quite believe she’s had the gall to tweet this.

Priti Patel
@pritipatel
Deeply saddened by the passing of Paulette Wilson who dedicated her last years to highlight the terrible injustices faced by the #Windrush generation.
Together we must continue on her mission to right the wrongs.

@GhostofFrankGrimes with corbyn at the helm, rightly or wrongly, labour lost support in droves - worst electoral defeat since the 1930s, long standing labour areas turning tory despite 10 years of austerity and neglect. It's clear he still has support in the party but he's poison to the general electorate. Too much baggage, too many questions about anti-semitism, perceived disloyalty to the crown etc Who knows how much of it was fabricated by the press, but
fact is swing voters in the south east and midlands were scared off and that's who labour need to attract to have any chance of winning unless they are actually happy being in opposition !

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/07/2020 09:51

The austerity and neglect has been pinned on the EU not the Tories. That's what happens when you have a predominantly right wing euro sceptic press.

Pepperwort · 26/07/2020 21:42

I know the other thread has started, but the consistent complaint about JC that I heard was that 'he's a communist'. It reminded me strongly of McCarthyism in America. Politics has swung so far to the right that central policies can be painted as extreme left, and become so dumbed down that looks matter more than policies. Between that and anti-semitism he never stood a chance.

ListeningQuietly · 27/07/2020 13:09

I never said Corbyn was a Communist
I said he was an idiot Grin

Pepperwort · 27/07/2020 15:44

Sending tweets addressed to ‘comrades’ certainly did nothing to stop the label. No one wants lessons from places that kill their own people so eagerly. No one here anyway.
