Westministenders: Can you tell your Rs from Elbows?

This week Mark Sedwill has resigned (or was he pushed?) and David Frost (chief brexit lead) was appointed National Security Adviser in a move that enraged Theresa May. The former prime minister felt that his appointment was unprofessional and that was a political appointment not an independent one and that he lacked experience. Of course in terms of national security we still haven't had that report on Russia and I don't believe The Intelligence and Security Committee has yet been named (not sat since Johnson was appointed as PM).

We have passed the deadline for extending transition and we have now apparently said that negotiations on the end of transition will finish at the end of September.

The bill ending Free movement of people has been signed, amongst much fanfare by the Conservatives saying they have delivered on the Referendum promise. However we might have up to 3million Hong Kongers who we are willing to allow into the country which might not go down too well with those who were unhappy with 'unrestricted EU immigration'.

We also have the demonstration of utter incompetence, outsourcing and lack of coordination and communication from central government and local government in the covid-19 crisis. A national scandal that isn't being properly reported by the press and leave you with the very large question of who is this government serving? If its contract with Deloittes over testing didn't require them to report positive tests to Public Health England, what was the point in the testing? How can this be consistent with 'The Government’s new approach to biosecurity will bring together the UK’s world-leading epidemiological expertise and fuse it with the best analytical capability from across Government in an integrated approach.' and will provide real time analysis and assessment of infection outbreaks at a community level, to enable rapid intervention before outbreaks grow.?

The growing feeling that Brexit is being exploited by this government for personal interests and those of big business at the expense of the general public is one which was feared and grows harder to argue against by the day.

"
In fact the one thing which might unseat the Tories is an English independence party. Maybe Farage still has mischief to make ?"

I think the current Conservative party is the Independence party. So many UKIP members have joined them.

JeSuisPoulet · 09/07/2020 21:04

Although usually anyone not buying there is not welcome to sit on "their" pub benches in "their" garden... Hmm

JeSuisPoulet · 09/07/2020 21:06

Farage is still loitering with intent though. He's just been back o'er the pond to raise a few bob for something-or-other remember? I don't think he was there to hold Trump's hand through the pandemic somehow.

prettybird · 09/07/2020 21:12

Support for English independence is apparently growing, according to a recent poll - but unlike the independence movements in Scotland and Wales, it is amongst the older and more right wing wonder why? Hmm

Poulet
Farridge just needs to think a new party name as some nasty people rather ruined his last idea [snigger]

People in Spain, Italy, France and Germany would all prefer travellers from other countries over those from the UK

COVID risk - this govt's cockups have reported around the world

The Independent's front page shows one of their reporters who has been recently arrested - and then assaulted - in the USA:

"journalism is not a crime"

< well it may be in the USA, if you report what Republicans don't want people to know >

England is going through a bout of national insanity. Sadly, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

The only way I can see Scottish Independence NOT happening is if WM comes up with a fully federal offer that gives equality - enshrined in law - to all regions. That means Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland getting an equal say over trade, tax and foreign policy.

I also think things are going to shift very quickly with a massive depression around the corner.

JeSuisPoulet · 10/07/2020 08:08

Liz Truss really didn't read the room on global embarrassment, did she?

Chris Grayling??? Chairing the intelligence and security committee? The mind boggles. Again.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/09/chris-grayling-expected-chair-isc-intelligence-security-committee

Not entirely as boggling, as it's not surprising, but still disappointing. No UK participation in the EU vaccination programme.

JeSuisPoulet · 10/07/2020 08:14

Laughable that this govt thinks it could roll out a vaccine faster www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jul/10/uk-has-opted-out-of-eu-coronavirus-vaccine-programme-sources-say as we opt out of the EU vaccine programme.

JeSuisPoulet · 10/07/2020 08:16

Snap MShip. Grayling...wow. Another blow for our national security. Seeing a theme here starting with Cummings, anyone else?

JeSuisPoulet · 10/07/2020 08:20

Also, these MP's do know that they've allowed themselves to visit a barber now, right? I mean Sharma just needs to get the clippers out but do I understand Bozo needs his cut to the perfect amount of messy.

Snap prettybird

PawFives · 10/07/2020 09:56

Yes, why would someone proven to be as inept as Grayling will be in charge of something as important as national security?

PawFives · 10/07/2020 09:56

Extra ‘will’ in there

TheMShip · 10/07/2020 10:04

Sabrina, pretty, I love that letter. Worth posting twice!

In times gone by, the UK creating a situation where Africa turns to a communist ally rather than a Western one would most assuredly not have been received with champagne corks by the US.

Funnily enough, I can't see team Trump caring.

China has been quietly buying up Africa for decades. My friends DF who lived in Kenya till a few years ago noted how much building material was being supplied from China all over the continent.

It's been US/UK policy since WW2 to ensure Africa never achieves enough stability to be able to get fair prices for it's resources. Seems that might be coming to an end. (Worth noting that "Public Enemy #1" Gaddafi was a bit proponent of pan-African unity and put his countries money where it's mouth is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Man-Made_River ) . I've heard it asserted many times that a properly organised irrigation and agricultural infrastructure around Lake Victoria (which would involve close cooperation of several countries) could grow more than enough grain to feed all of Africa.

It's not so much that Europe has shat on Africa for centuries. It's that it's continuing to do so with the US at the helm.

Peregrina · 10/07/2020 10:37

I noticed how much reconstruction was going on in Cuba a few years back, and how virtually all the bags of cement stacked up said Made in China on them. It was when Obama was in office and the US was warming towards Cuba, and that would have been a golden opportunity to get US materials in, and help cement their position.

Jason118 · 10/07/2020 10:38

Cement their position, very good GrinGrinGrin

Peregrina · 10/07/2020 10:39
