Westminstenders: Political vacuums are very bad things

Johnson has been notible (once again) but his absence.

Whilst we appreciate he has been ill and has a new baby, we are in the midst of a national crisis and a sense of leadership and guidance from our prime minister has been lacking.

And its not gone unnoticed.

Not just by the press. And not just by opposition. Nor NHS and care managers. But on the ground where it matters.

The lack of the sense of seriousness has dissipated. The sense of duty to country to behave. The idea that it will some how be all over this week when it doesn't appear to be the government strategy. The total lack of policy for a week whilst it's become clear bit by bit that these things have been under discussion and decided upon prior to the supposed key meeting on Thursday from the announcements from the regional assemblies. All in favour of a TV stunt tomorrow night.

Let's see how that goes.

The grandstanding isn't a substitute for detail and substance in a crisis. And we still have the looming show down at the end of June over extension of transition. More optics. More lack of practicality at a time when things will really be on the brink.

The next month will be telling and we hit the wall of economic reality which will bring the whole world crashing in on the lives of so many people.

This is the calm before the storm. Enough the sunshine. Enjoy the time with families. Before this is over everything will have changed for so many.

This is just the start of things unravelling and it needs someone to take control and draw up solid blueprints for all our futures. Is a man who is so frequently awol from where he is supposed to be and doesn't take commitments and responsibilities seriously, really the man for that?

Churchill had a vision for the country that cited housing as our second social service, the NHS being our first.

Will Johnson manage to some how forge out so grand new venture which gives the resource and rewards it deserves to the NHS (beyond lipservice and empty platitudes and clapping, that recognises the importance of social care and can stop the almost inevitable coming wave of homelessness and unemployment

And can he do it without selling us off as a basement bargain to the us?

The consolation prize especially under FPTP of not getting the government you voted for, should be to get an opposition willing, capable and determined to hold the winners to account. Then at least there's a balance to the system and the majority of people can feel listened too.

The Tories were pretty shit in opposition as I recall.

Bloody hell, BJ's Mad March Hare letter on care homes Shock

Basic general knowledge and common sense should have told him that
a) institutions are breeding grounds for infection
b) the elderly are usually the most vulnerable to everything

==> c) Care homes serve up victims on a plate to COVID

  • even when other governments have taken precautions that he didn't

At last a functional leader of the Opposition to hold this govt to account
and hopefully push them to perform better, now the free ride is over

Songsofexperience · 13/05/2020 15:10

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes. I know we're only virtual acquaintances but it does mean a lot! X

Meanwhile, back in the mists of time, the UK gets another slapdown from SCOTUK

www.rte.ie/news/courts/2020/0513/1138082-gerry-adams-uk-supreme-court/

The UK's highest court has said Gerry Adams was imprisoned illegally by the British government when he was interned without trial in the early 1970s.

The Supreme Court has quashed his two convictions for trying to escape from Long Kesh Prison.

(contd)

I wonder how much compensation Mr. Adams will be due ?

One tiny bright spot in this crisis:

NI politicians are agreeing together on what is safest for NI,
the hard right Darwinists in GB and the USA:

https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0427/1135152-politicians-in-northern-ireland-warn-against-impatience/

First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill were speaking after weekend reports that compliance with social distancing has reduced.

In their daily press briefing, they both warned that it is too early for restrictions to be lifted.

"Now is not the time for government, for businesses and for individuals to gamble with peoples' lives,
and we need to proceed cautiously and make sure we are doing everything we can to avoid another spike occurring,"
Mrs Foster said.

"It is not the time for impatience to get the better of us. No one should act as if coronavirus has been beaten, it hasn't, and we still have some way to go."

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 16:06

How long before BJ resigns?

I expect Govey has ordered one of them there JML knfie-sharpeners. But we cannot go on like this, and his blunt refusal to consider the extension because "The British People want certainty" may get him what he wishes for if enough of the Class of 19 vote with the opposition.

DGRossetti · 13/05/2020 16:12

I'm guessing Boris will have a fridge somewhere that desperately needs an interior inspection and would rather "die in a ditch" than reappear in the HoC and eat humble pie.

That being the case, what sanctions - if any - would be available.

We already know that the penalty for contempt of parliament is cessation of chocolate rations, so I think it might be an hour on the naughty step ?

yoikes · 13/05/2020 16:19

I always imagine Rees Mogg and Gove chanting invocations over a dusty amulet in some pyramid shaped room...
May their Gods damn them!

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 16:20

The apposite questions are about what the Govt. did before March 23. All questions of this nature are met with the protestation that they are not doing that anymore so that's alright then.

The plan may be for Handcock to be BJ's fag and whipping-boy, but this aint Eton.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 16:58

BJ has responded to Starmer's letter, and it looks like he wants to nitpick with a QC and former DPP.

'How dare you not ask the question I answered' seems to be the gist of it.

Hello Hooray, what a nice day for the Eton Rifles.

DGRossetti · 13/05/2020 17:13

BJ has responded to Starmer's letter, and it looks like he wants to nitpick with a QC and former DPP.

Did he return to the Commons then ?

DGRossetti · 13/05/2020 17:17

Starmer fan club growing ...

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/pmqs-keir-starmer-boris-johnson-interrogation-coronavirus-a4439686.html

There is a terrifying quality to Sir Keir Starmer’s weekly interrogation of Boris Johnson. He doesn’t raise his voice, nor display anger; he just calmly, chillingly, dissects the facts he has assembled for the jury.

His face is dispassionate, pitiless even, the expression of a prosecutor who has sent down bigger villains and merely wonders how long before the pathetic wretch in the dock trips himself up and realises the game is up.

(contd)

mrslaughan · 13/05/2020 17:28

I need to catch up on the thread - but anyone else watching the briefing. Jennrick just delivered a shameless advertisement for Taylor Whimpey
Absolutely disgusting
I have filled in my first BBC complaint.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 17:32

Jennrick just delivered a shameless advertisement for Taylor Whimpey

A little glimpse of our post-Brexit Trumpy future, with plenty of sweetheart deals with anyone who bungs a bob in Tory party coffers.

DGRossetti · 13/05/2020 17:35

Hello Hooray, what a nice day for the Eton Rifles.

..And the public gets what the public wants; but I want nothing this societies got I'm going underground ...

DGRossetti · 13/05/2020 17:46

One for the nerds ...

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 17:46

With an old school tie and a reference you can cover up crimes in their defence....

Oh dear. It seems BJ's accusation that Starmer was quoting selectively was, er, can you guess....?

bit.ly/3dKcMga

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 13/05/2020 17:52

So the press were briefed that it was S1, but Starmer was actually quoting from S7.

Now this could be a good old-fashioned muddle, or do we have a Labour leader who has read Machiavelli?

Playing with the big boys now, BJ.

dontcallmelen · 13/05/2020 18:11
