Westministenders: No Australia Don't Have A Deal

RedToothBrush · 04/02/2020 16:47

Since Friday, far from letting things calm down, Johnson has doubled down stating that if we can't have a Canada Deal (which the EU says wouldn't be equal because we are much closer than Canada geographically) we will go for an Australia Deal.

This is the latest rehash of a managed no deal package up as something else which the EU have already repeatedly said no to.

So we are on track for no deal.

At the same time Johnson has got very excited about American food and how its great. Almost as if he wants no deal wit the EU to force a shitty bad deal with the us through.

Johnson and his chronies have also been trying to undermine journalistic transparency by blocking access to the lobby to some media outlets in a move that makes us look like a tinpot dictatorship. Fortunately there was a mass walk out of journalists but it remains to be seen how long that can be maintained.

Far from being a clean slate to move forward from its already proving that nothing has changed and old divisions are as deep as ever, if not worse...

Faithless Electors

The government has no confidence in the people and has decided to elect itself a new people - B Brecht

HesterThrale · 06/02/2020 19:20

Best for Britain has decided on 'negotiating aims' for 2020.

Therefore, we commit to championing the following aims for the negotiations:
Secure reciprocal freedom of movement with the EU.
Maintain EU environmental, consumer and trade regulations.
Defend workers’ rights, human rights and recourse to international legal protections.
Commit to reciprocal security and policing arrangements with the EU.
Maintain cross-border co-operation on science and technology and study programmes for students.

Sounds good to me.

Sounds good to me too Hester, but Johnson won.

Police believe CIRA planted bomb intended for 'Brexit day' attack

Police believe the Continuity IRA (CIRA) was responsible for a bomb found attached to a lorry in County Armagh on Tuesday morning.

It is thought the device may have been intended for a Brexit day attack.

Police said they first received a report about an explosive device in a lorry at Belfast docks on 31 January - the date the UK left the EU.

In a call to a media outlet, it was claimed the lorry was due to travel by ferry to Scotland.

I profess not to understand island of Ireland politics but if Brexit in its current form looks more likely to bring about a united Ireland, why would Continuity IRA be upset? Isn't it more likely the UDA would be choking on their weetabix?

BigChocFrenzy · 06/02/2020 23:00

It's probably not about Brexit as such:
The Provos used to pick big days, like NYD, to get bigger headlines

Imustchangenamesoon · 07/02/2020 00:10

I know it's late but insomnia bites.

There is mayhem going on in ROI regarding Sinn Fein because they covered up murder and atrocities. They are riding high in the polls just the same, but that is the right on student types who haven't a clue what went on before and don't want to know. If they knew like the rest of us they would just walk away.

I do realise that this is a British website, but Sinn Fein are in NI also. Like the DUP, did nothing for three + years and to be honest, a plague on all their houses.

ROI has to deal with these people SF now. Awful stuff, but the kids do not understand what went before.

Sorry, just a bit of a rant.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2020 07:48

The rise of SF is nothing new and should surprise no-one.

SF as an island-wide political and electoral force has been inevitable since the most significant developments in Irish politics for many decades, namely the announcement of the Ballot Box in One Hand and the Armalite in the Other approach of 1981 and the Anglo Irish Agreement of 1985. For many voters, the word 'resulting' should feature in that sentence - 'the resulting Anglo Irish Agreement'. From then on, SF has been inching further and further away from the armalite, with growing support on both sides of the Border. The momentum is firmly on the side of the ballot box now and people are prepared to look at SF policies that address the here and now. Irish people have been weary of politics hinging on questions along the lines of 'Where were you in 1921/ 1980?' for several decades.

Mockersisrightasusual · 07/02/2020 09:15

I suppose you could ask at what point Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are absolved from their crimes in the civil war?

The fascinating thing is how SF have been able to pull off the trick of passing off the likes of McDonald and O'Neill as anything but photogenic frontwomen for the blokes in balaclavas who are still in charge in the shadows.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2020 10:45

BJ gets a spanking ?
He hasn't yet twigged how to keep in Trump's good books: do absolutely everything he orders,
especially about buying American (even if the American product is not yet ready)

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/boris-johnson

Downing Street has sought to play down the significance of a
difficult phone call between Donald Trump and Boris Johnsonn* over the UK’s decision to allow Chinese company Huawei to help build its 5G network.

Trump was reported by the FT to have been “apoplectic” about the decision taken by Johnson,
and the phone call last week was said by one official to have been “very difficult” and tense.

Mockersisrightasusual · 07/02/2020 11:16

This from a man who conducts official business on his unsecured and undoubtedly hacked Chinese-made phone.

ContinuityError · 07/02/2020 11:27

Trump was reported by the FT to have been “apoplectic” about the decision taken by Johnson

Anything that sends blood pressure sky high could have “interesting” consequences for an older obese and supremely unfit person?

Mockersisrightasusual · 07/02/2020 11:29

And we've chosen a new ambassador to replace the one he shafted.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-51413307

No-Nonsesne takes no shit Welsh girl. Basically, we've sent Nessa to sort him out.

DGRossetti · 07/02/2020 11:30

Meanwhile, in Middle Earth ....

www.theregister.co.uk/2020/02/06/chinas_mobile_google/

A consortium of Chinese phone makers are to create alternatives to Google's dominant Play Store, reducing their reliance on America tech and building another potential source of income.

(contd)

Google must hate Trump (we don't hear too much over here about Californian separatism, but it is "a thing" ...). He is single handedly giving the entire Chinese tech industry an incentive to develop a non-Google android. With an added incentive for a lot of non-Chinese experts to help. Who knows, I might revisit the oath I swore after "the Blackberry incident" (second volume of my memoirs) to develop for mobiles again.

Bearbehind · 07/02/2020 12:23

They are riding high in the polls just the same, but that is the right on student types who haven't a clue what went on before and don't want to know. If they knew like the rest of us they would just walk away.

Isn’t this just the kind of attitude that made Leavers dig in so hard?

Students are perfectly capable of finding out what went on before and if they chose not to, or chose to find out but still support it then that’s up to them.

Saying ‘if they knew they would walk away’ is just saying your opinion count for more than theirs isn’t it?

And look how that ended with Brexit

DGRossetti · 07/02/2020 12:52

No-Nonsesne takes no shit Welsh girl. Basically, we've sent Nessa to sort him out.

Interesting. I wonder where the real power is now, then ?

If I had to create a photofit of the ambassador least likely to impress Trump and his cabal, it would be a woman (naturally) who has gained a high level of respect from the UN (which he hates).

Managing to find a combined package and get our own Blond Bombshell to appoint her ambassador speaks volumes.

Songsofexperience · 07/02/2020 13:09

Indeed, I like her profile but I wasn't expecting that. It's basically the anti Fromage.

Peregrina · 07/02/2020 13:11

My thoughts about the new Ambassador too, DGR - a woman, an absolute No-No for Trump, even though she appears from what I read to be very competent.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2020 13:17

"Students are perfectly capable of finding out what went on before and if they chose not to, or chose to find out but still support it then that’s up to them."

SInn Fein are the political wing of a terrorist organisation that bombed, maimed, murdered, tortured, kidnapped thousands of people, in NI and in GB

Yes, I will judge and condemn any Irish students either ignorant enough not to know what SInn Fein / IRA did, or psychopathic enough not to care

Current Nazi supporters choose not to bother finding out about the Holocaust, or not to care about the 6 million
I judge them too and I refuse to pander to their hurt feelings
They are entirely to blame for their decision to vote neo-Nazi / far right

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2020 13:21

Sounds good news about the UK ambassador to Washington - a professional diplomat with a competent track record

BJ didn't give in and appoint Farage, or any other of the Brexiter figures who have been suggested

One of several decisions where he hasn't toed the US line
Let's hope he continues to ignore those tiny Trumpian fingers wagging at him

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2020 13:28

I accept that British security forces often broke the law during the Troubles, caused many miscarriages of justice and even committed several war crimes

However, the IRA were far worse, because their entire "armed struggle" ignored the rules of warfare and war crimes were their typical modus operandi

That's a completely separate matter from my opinion that Ireland should never have been partitioned - under threat from the British govt of mass murder -
and that it will inevitable reunite in the medium to longterm.

Mockersisrightasusual · 07/02/2020 13:30

The UK only ever sends experienced professional diplomats to its embassies, although Blair did give a few placemen and women cushy numbers in the high commissions.

Trumpy does indeed have a problem with any confident woman who stands up to him. Could be fun.

Bearbehind · 07/02/2020 13:31

They are entirely to blame for their decision to vote neo-Nazi / far right

But my point was, as with Leavers and Brexit, you can ‘blame’ these people all you like but it doesn’t stop them having the right to their opinion.

ListeningQuietly · 07/02/2020 13:32

Looking at the biog of Karen Pierce, I suspect its been done despite Johnson being PM rather than because of it.
The UK and US civil servants both know that the only way to get decent long lasting outcomes while we have two such vain buffoons in the public seats
is to have rock solid back office staff
