Westministenders: No Australia Don't Have A Deal

RedToothBrush · 04/02/2020 16:47

Since Friday, far from letting things calm down, Johnson has doubled down stating that if we can't have a Canada Deal (which the EU says wouldn't be equal because we are much closer than Canada geographically) we will go for an Australia Deal.

This is the latest rehash of a managed no deal package up as something else which the EU have already repeatedly said no to.

So we are on track for no deal.

At the same time Johnson has got very excited about American food and how its great. Almost as if he wants no deal wit the EU to force a shitty bad deal with the us through.

Johnson and his chronies have also been trying to undermine journalistic transparency by blocking access to the lobby to some media outlets in a move that makes us look like a tinpot dictatorship. Fortunately there was a mass walk out of journalists but it remains to be seen how long that can be maintained.

Far from being a clean slate to move forward from its already proving that nothing has changed and old divisions are as deep as ever, if not worse...

I can't see BJ resigning either. Power is addictive. Remember how people said that Trump would walk away from the presidency?

DGRossetti · 16/02/2020 17:40

The BBC will be a terrible loss. The Tories are attacking a relatively impartial media

The key in that sentence is "relatively". Relative to what ? I have lived through years of accusations of BBC bias from both sides and generally thought it was in the middle.

Until Brexit - when it was clear to me after the they were taking a pro line.

That's when I lost interest. Fare thee well BBC. You've gone the way of all sycophants. If you had known of Perillos, you would have known what was happening.

Songsofexperience · 16/02/2020 17:45

My thoughts exactly.

Songsofexperience · 16/02/2020 17:46

They mistook impartiality for cowardice.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2020 17:51

Songs
Brexit merely followed on from Climate Change
allowing Nigel Lawson to spout about science morning after morning was what put me on guard
Brexit was just the coup de grace

the BBC needs to re learn that balance accuracy

DGRossetti · 16/02/2020 17:54

the BBC needs to re learn that balance accuracy

Why ? The damage is done. As DF often used to say, "The time to save money is when you have money".

The BBC is doomed. Maybe the only people who can't see it (and you can understand why) are the BBC. This is Thatchers revenge from beyond the grave.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 18:03

I'd be happy for the BBC to continue - but financed only by ads or subscription, not via the licence

My main objection has always been against a flat rate tax for a non-essential

Even the poorest are forced to pay 150 quid when they are struggling to pay the rent or school uniform, even food
The most vulnerable women in particular are harassed and face prosecution; some have even been jailed for non-payment

Those who want the BBC should bloody well pay for it themselves
Stop forcing everyone else to fund your personal preferences Angry

(and I've thought that for 40 years; it's not because of the crash in BBC professional standards since 2010)

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 18:06

It was clear to people on this thread that the BBC was biased in favour of Brexit. But not to the Tories. The morning after the election, there was someone from the Telegraph on the Today programme, to tell the BBC to its face that it would lose the license fee because of its anti-Brexit bias. He was angry and out for revenge.

malylis · 16/02/2020 18:13

People on both sides accuse the BBC of bias.

Its a sign its pretty hood at being impartial.

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 18:27

Not necessarily.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 18:41

No, when so many say it's crap, maybe it is just crap

malylis · 16/02/2020 18:45

When so many say its crap for directly onflicting reasons then maybe it isn't.

prettybird · 16/02/2020 18:52

I have lived through years of accusations of BBC bias from both sides and generally thought it was in the middle. Until Brexit - when it was clear to me after the they were taking a pro line. That's when I lost interest.

That happened to me in 2014 when the BBC decided that "impartiality" meant "Better together" equalled 3 parties each getting to make their case for Better Together and only one party getting the chance to make the case for Yes. Despite the fact that the Greens were also pro-Indy and there was a whole group of Labour supporters who were pro-Indy (not that the BBC acknowledged them).

And Gordon Fucking Brown given an uncritical platform immediately before the Indyref. Angry

And bloody Nick Robinson completely misrepresenting Alex Salmond as having "not answered his question" (he had, repeatedly and directly / it just want the answer that Nick wanted) - as was confirmed in a complaint after the event. Angry

Scotland now has the lowest percentage of TV licence holders in the UK. I'm sure it's not a coincidence Hmm

squid4 · 16/02/2020 19:08

BBC were editing less hungover historical footage into live versions of Johnson, and editing out laughter when he spoke.
That is hardly impartial.
There were no equivalent "accidents" of editing which made Corbyn look better - correct me if wrong.
They have a female time lord though - proof of their left wing bias Hmm The appearance/existence of anything that isn't white and male is apparently left wing now. Hmm Hmm

I cancelled my licence during the election and feel a bit mixed now, I am certainly not sympathetic, but should we let the tories dismantle the BBC as well as the NHS etc... (I also miss the attenborough stuff...)

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 19:12

They've been hugely cowardly and irresponsible over climate change and Brexit. Unforgivable. But are in many ways great. Cummings has apparently said he wants a Fox news for the UK. We will miss it terribly and will never get it back. And it's yet another kick in the teeth for soft power / reputation.

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 19:15

If Cummings is in favour of the World Service, as he says, he won't be talking about on honest, impartial World Service.

Peregrina · 16/02/2020 19:22

Johnson will not resign. He is too arrogant.

No, but don't forget that the Tory party is ruthless when it comes to getting rid of a PM who they think is a liability. How that will work with a party stuffed full of right winger sycophants, I am not wholly sure, but I do expect a blood letting in the fullness of time.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 19:45

If enough people want the BBC to pay the subscription, then the BBC will thrive
Maybe cut out all the moronic game shows, sport etc,
so just news, current affairs, documentaries, drama

Demanding that the poor be forced to pay for the entertainment of the privileged is very cloth-eared, especially atm

Ending the licence fee would be a popular move for BJ:
At a stroke, save most families 150 quid per year in compulsory expenditure

it would cost the govt nothing and might even bring in a useful couple of billion, if the can sell off the BBC

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 19:48

So far BJ is popular, over 80% approval rating with Tory voters

I doubt if he'll be in serious trouble unless the economic effects of a hard / No deal brexit hit
So, not before some time next year
Maybe not then, if he can divert blame, or use another crisis - a useful war, or virus .....

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 19:52

A licence fee isn't essential. I haven't had a licence fee for the past 13 years.

bluehighlighter · 16/02/2020 19:53

Radio 4 is free to the listener. Will be a great loss. Together with the rest of BBC radio.

malylis · 16/02/2020 19:58

Lots of BBC output would be a great loss. But it has to be said that terrestrial tv is dying.

I'd pay for I player and BBC radio over Amazon Prime/Netflix and the big players, Disney et al know that the BBC would be a strong competitor if allowed to operate world wide.

malylis · 16/02/2020 20:01

In fact just think of the number of hit shows the bbc has started since Netflix and Amazon started putting out original content. I think the been has managed more sure fire hits.

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2020 20:05

Sorry but I have to fundamentally disagree

Kids TV - no advert, no selling
BBC4 / OU linkups
PROPER historical analysis

nobody will pay for them
but they will miss them when they are gone
and NO commercial broadcaster will replace it

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE analyse what you are binning before you do

BigChocFrenzy · 16/02/2020 20:09

If their output is that good, then they'll do well as a subscription service like the others
or paid for by ads

The problem is that people who don't want it and / or can't afford it are being forced to pay, or being dragged through the courts if they pay their rent or something instead

There is no justification to force others to pay for the entertainment & current affairs of the often more privileged
