Southend seems ready Grin

southendnewsnetwork.net/news/uk-government-announces-pubs-will-be-able-to-serve-beer-in-pints-again-after-january-31st/

Brexit Britain received another huge boost from the government today after a senior cabinet spokesperson confirmed that all pubs in the United Kingdom will be allowed to serve beer in pints again once the nation leaves the European Union on January 31st 2020 at 11pm.

In another surprise development, all road signs across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland will display distances in miles.

Brexiteers have reacted with excitement to the news that these imperial measurements will once again take pride of place over their Europe-inspired metric equivalents.

David Fuch-Weet told us, ‘It’s a victory for the will of the people.’

It still feels like a bad dream that I want to wake up from.

Southend seems ready

That is excellently funny DG Grin

Oldandsad · 27/01/2020 10:22

What does PMK means?
Feeling very sad, just want to bury my head in sand forever :-( brexit coincided and resonated with my personal crisis, feel like there is no place where to hide from it all. Cannot believe someone can actually celebrate it.

And hopefully no one will be be forced any longer to round down their height to centimetres on a vertical bacon slicer.

Tinselette1940 · 27/01/2020 10:30

PMK stands for placemarking

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 27/01/2020 10:38

DGRossetti Grin that made me chuckle.

Peregrina · 27/01/2020 10:41

PMK then got corrupted by someone's autocorrect to Place Mat King or some such, and the we had Plaice Mat King etc. and then we started posting pictures of cats........

The BBC is going to have a special news bulletin at 10pm on Friday. I am really glad that I will be out of the country.

Somewhere (Guardian maybe) someone made comparisons with the celebrations at the end of the War, pointing out that for some who had lost loved ones and been bombed out of homes and businesses it would have been quite hard to celebrate. Even those though, would have been able to be glad that no one else was going to suffer in the same way. With the Brexiteers crowing and gloating - many of them will suffer even if they think they won't. I really won't have any ears for their complaints.

PatienceThreadbare · 27/01/2020 11:10

@Oldandsad, you are not alone. Many of us are struggling. My heart goes out to you.
I wish I had something useful or positive to say, but this week feels utterly heartbreaking to me. For some reason the enormity of what we have lost has hit me afresh today.
I think I am here because it helps me to feel less alone.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to these threads.

DGRossetti · 27/01/2020 11:11

Somewhere (Guardian maybe) someone made comparisons with the celebrations at the end of the War,

Especially in May, as countless thousands were still fighting (and had yet to die Sad) in the Far East.

Peregrina · 27/01/2020 11:24

The VE day commemorations this year are another thing that the Tory Government have botched. The Bank Holiday is due to be shifted to 8th May - nothing wrong with that in itself - but they didn't decide until too late, so diaries and calendars all show the Monday as the May Day holiday, and Bank Holiday events have already been booked for the first weekend. It's not as though the date of VE day wasn't known.

You have to wonder how people who can make a mess of something relatively simple are going to negotiated 45 years worth of new trade deals in 11 months.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 11:48

I will land in the UK 10pm on 31st Jan 2020. Just in time to be at home when the clock strikes 11pm.

Then the champagne cork is popped in memory of grandfather.

Peregrina · 27/01/2020 12:12

Unless of course, your flight is delayed or you find yourself stuck in a traffic jam on the M25.

My grandfather fought in WW1 - he would have had absolutely no time for this triumphalism. Like many men of his generation, the horrors of it were something he could not bring himself to talk about.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 27/01/2020 12:14

Will you be celebrating something MysteryTripAgain?

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2020 12:15

Mystery
You must be flying in from the EU with freedom of movement to be clear of an airport terminal within 1 hour of landing Smile

Oldandsad · 27/01/2020 12:22

@PatienceThreadbare thank you. For me it is the second change: first was when the Soviet Union collapsed. If felt like loosing my country (which if course it was), but I was very young and full of life back then.

Peregrina · 27/01/2020 12:24

Really Mystery ought to make a point of going to the non-EU gates and queue there. Especially if flights have come in from places in the Far East and South America and stonking great queues have built up. It will be what you voted for, so get in some practice.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 13:29

No checked in luggage to collect and arrival airport is 20 minutes drive to my home.

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 13:35

Why if flight arrives in UK before 11pm?

Especially if flights have come in from places in the Far East and South America and stonking great queues have built up

Flight departs from the Netherlands.

It will be what you voted for, so get in some practice

Fine. Sit in business class lounges at someone else’s cost. My new contact is based on hours door to door.

Dapplegrey · 27/01/2020 13:39

Oldandsad - were you sorry when the Soviet Union collapsed?

dontcallmelen · 27/01/2020 13:48

PMK, thank you as ever to Red & all other contributors nothing to add just sadness mixed in with worry
