No, not yet, but soon. Just 24 more sleeps until we legally leave the EU at 11pm on 31 January and finally enter the transition period after what seems like centuries of argument, dither and delay. We do so with hope, optimism and a determination to be a good friend and neighbour to the EU, but for now, no one said it better than Winston Churchill.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”

The Pub Rule is the same as it always was: all welcome but only if you leave goadery outside. The first drink is on the house.

I worked across Leigh and Wigan for a good few years and we always said that the people would vote for my cat if we put a red ribbon on him.
Well, not any more. For Leigh to go Tory is staggering.

Labour leader contender Jess is claiming to have a post graduate diploma but guido Fawkes reckons she left after the first year and never finished the course.

And Wong Dailey's House is in the poshest part of Manchester.

Neither are working class.
Not that their class should have anything to do with it. People will vote for a credible, competent leader, not someone useless just because they claim to be working class. These voters are not thick.
Look at Boris. People from wc areas voted for him.

I too like Lisa Nandy. I think she is credible but I don't think she will win.

As for Lady Nugee claiming to be wc. It beggars belief. Her husband is a high court judge. I hope Boris sorts the courts out.

howabout · 18/01/2020 16:14

Neddie who is your preferred candidate?

Sir Keir has so much baggage from his time as DPP and Shadow Cabinet he would self destruct taking the remnants of the party with him in his mess of carefully triangulated contradictions. The only thing that might prevent this would be him being so incredibly boring no-one notices. Tbf the latter may be the more plausible scenario.

I think any of RLB, Jess or Lisa would be a much safer bet.

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 16:38

Hi all. Pint of Best and a Cheese Ploughmans please. Whilst the I''m so wc from the politicos is rather tedious, I've come to the conclusion that the hugely annoying and very smug Emily Thornberry would make the best Opposition Leader.

Whilst I prefer Jess n Lisa as 'people' and politicians - HoC needs a very strong Opposition Leader to keep in check those in Govt and Ms Thornberry has the ability to do that. As well as keeping her own Party a bit more in line and therefore more cohesive and stronger.

Doesn't mean I have to like the woman or much of what she does.

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 16:53

What difference does it make who's leader really? I assume it will be Starmer, he seems to be way ahead.

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 17:02

Nice - of course it matters who's in opposition if you prefer a strong democracy. Starmer may be ahead now, doesn't mean he'll always be, it's a long race.

Can I get you a drink - it's a virtual Pub (we do actually know that) so you can order what you like and it will get mustered, Have you a pref for Labour Leader or is it something you couldn't give two shinies about?

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 17:12

But leavers don't prefer a strong democracy, as I said. They think democracy is an inconvenience or 'dither and delay' or treason. They want Boris to just get on with it. Whatever that means.

Remainers might want a strong democracy but I'm afraid the election result put paid to that - with that majority they could vote for everyone to bow down to a photo of Boris every morning and it would get through.

howabout · 18/01/2020 17:19

Disagree completely.

Majority Govts with decent Opposition make for strong Democracies.

Cameron / Clegg style marriages of inconvenience where all convictions get junked so as not to rock the boat plus centrists who can't agree what they think about anything in Opposition make for 10 years of austerity and mess.

The Election result tends to suggest the majority agree with this view.

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 17:19

Really? Is that really what you think about people who voted Remain and people that voted Leave in 2016? Is everything in your perception of Life, etc so rigid and either one or the other, or just this?

Genuine question.

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 17:20

Previous post addressed to Nice.

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 17:20

Does make me smile wryly though when leavers keep trotting out that stuff about the need for a strong opposition.

Unless I was hallucinating i'm sure I even heard Boris say it! Such a load of hypocritical BS.

howabout · 18/01/2020 17:22

Nice you are indicating you prefer no Govt at all?

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 18/01/2020 17:26

You are wasting your time here Hate. It’s quite clear that you are trying (to no avail) to have a articulate and nuanced conversation with a very fixed thinker. The two positions are incompatible for a worthy or gainful dialogue. Smells like a load of old arse to me...

Wine for hate.

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 17:36

Thanks Epic - seeing as i'm here anyway it's just pub chit-chat so no waste of time really. I'm more 'marvelling' that the shortened versions of mine and Eddies names are Hate and Nice.

howabout · 18/01/2020 17:38
Wine I just came in for a swift one while cooking the dinner.

Either you are very young, exceedingly unaware of how democracy & parliament function in this country, or are just being provocative for the sake of it

I am as yet undecided 🤔

Am inclined towards thinking it's a load of old Arse though, as Epic said

TheGhostOfEpicPast · 18/01/2020 17:43

“I'm more 'marvelling' that the shortened versions of mine and Eddies names are Hate and Nice.”

Haha, true! Very ironic! Lol 😉

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 17:47

No need for the nastiness, no need at all. You might have missed my post where I offered my sympathies for your business going bust Epic?

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 17:47

If you don't like or agree with what I post just ignore it

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 17:52

Either you are very young, exceedingly unaware of how democracy & parliament function in this country, or are just being provocative for the sake of it

Instead of the lofty tone you could try to explain to me?

HateIsNotGood · 18/01/2020 17:56

Nastiness? Where please Nice? No one has been mean to you, just offered you a drink, asked who you would prefer as Labour Leader and asked you, in response to your own statements about Leave and Remain voters, if you really believed that.

Now sit yourself down, have a drink (all are available) and stare at the fire a bit, I've just thrown a log on it. Or you can stay standing at the door occasionally shouting through it. We won't call the Police on you, just get on with it, have a good night, knowing full well it's a new day tomorrow.

Here's a Pisco Sour for you, one of my fav drinks.

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 18:05

Nastiness -

No need for it

“Am just about to watch this mornings hustings.

Desperate times = desperate measures! Lol! Truth be told, I’ve been so distracted lately, I have ignored politics. It’s been marvelous! I admit to being very lazy and catching up here instead! Blush

NiceGuyNeddie · 18/01/2020 18:29

you are indicating you prefer no Govt at all?

No, but I think people in this country are used to being very complacent politically and they are going to need to become a lot more visible and audible to counter the dangerous mob that's just been elected

AutumnRose1 · 18/01/2020 18:30

Howabout “I just came in for a swift one while cooking the dinner.”

That sounds so many shades of wrong. 😂
