Brexit Arms - Out with the old and in with the new

It’s time again for another Brexit Arms thread to see us into Christmas and beyond.

Well what a week it’s been!!

Boris has now completed his first week and he’s been busy. New conservatives have been sworn in, the Queens Speech yesterday shows promise (aware that the proof of the (Xmas) pudding is in the eating) and Boris’ Deal is going to be voted on today with the results being around 3pm I believe.

Meanwhile, on the other side all four wheels have definitely fallen off the red bus and were very nearly joined by a garden gate and a car door. Oh dear!!

Anyway, I have added a few more Christmas decs to the pub and popped the fairy back on the tree (it took a nasty tumble)

We are now good to go.
Cheers all 🍷🍷

Ps. If anyone wants to volunteer for outside catering that would be👍🏻

I'm afraid the referendum result exposed some pretty ugly fault lines, Autumn, and they were not confined to just one side.

I do think some people are pulling back from the extreme positions they felt driven to take in the 42 months since the result, and that's welcome, but there are those who will never be reconciled.

DuckWillow · 31/12/2019 10:11

An early Happy New Year to everyone. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year but finally we have a majority Government. Looking forward to progress now and a focus on stuff other than Brexit....which should be easier now there’s a majority.

I’ll be looking at stuff other than Brexit because of my DS who is autistic and who still needs a lot of support. I’ll be looking for investment in social care and mental health support. At the moment CAMHS and Adult Mental Health are appalling unless you can pay privately.

I hope that Brexit will just happen on plan and want the Conservatives in power for the next 10 years to iron out any issues. No point in a Government change in the early post Brexit years. It all needs to shake down and get organised first.

AutumnRose1 · 31/12/2019 10:15

Parliament reconvene on 7th

I always hate the Xmas period being soooooooo long but even more impatient for normal things to resume soon!

howabout · 31/12/2019 10:20

Lily “What really really irritates me is the lazy assumption that educated = intelligent and uneducated = thick.”

Very difficult to challenge because those who believe this have convinced themselves they are superior to all dissenters. Even if they are not convinced of their own superiority they will cite some "Expert" to venerate.

(Failed to bite my tongue and had this exact conversation in the other place yesterday)

My favourite through the looking glass is when people cite education = intelligence in one breath and then accuse Boris or even Domonic Raab of being thick.

SingingLily · 31/12/2019 10:28

Let them, Howabout. On that basis, they will continue to underestimate Boris and he will continue to surprise them.

There are both strategic and tactical advantages in being underestimated. It's often the most effective cover while you are busy Getting Things Done.

DuckWillow · 31/12/2019 10:37

Never underestimate Boris.

It annoys me when I see Boris Johnson compared with Donald Trump for example.
There is a world of difference between them educationally and in intelligence too. I’d also say a huge difference in emotional intelligence as well although Boris could do with lessons on “keeping it zipped up”.

I am first to say I don’t particularly like either Boris or Trump but that goes for many politicians tbh. I don’t underestimate Boris and as such I will hold his Government to account if they don’t deliver on some of the social stuff promised in the Manifesto.

howabout · 31/12/2019 10:40

Very true Lily Brew

Looking forward to a good few years of dull politics.

SingingLily · 31/12/2019 10:50

Well, here's something to cheer you up. Today's leader in the FT:

"How Britain can prosper after it leaves the EU"

That's right, the arch-Remainer FT has finally declared unconditional surrender and is ready to embrace freedom.

SingingLily · 31/12/2019 11:31

Here's an interesting snippet from The Times:

'Neither Ms Rayner nor Ms Long Bailey has formally announced her intention to run but in setting out her pitch yesterday, Ms Long Bailey announced that she was supporting Ms Rayner to become deputy. However, Ms Rayner is being urged by her allies not to reciprocate when she announces her own campaign. One source said: “It’s clear what Rebecca gets out of Angela’s support but not clear what Angela gets out of it. She’ll walk deputy either way. But if she backs Rebecca she’ll be dragged into the hard-left warfare.”

Based purely on anecdotal evidence, my Momentum rellies didn't buy into my view that democracy depends on the presence of a functioning Opposition, aka a credible alternative government-in-waiting. They found the notion of choosing as a leader "someone who is electable???" not only baffling but faintly risible. It's more important, apparently, to choose a leader on the basis of ideological purity and so it's RLB for them all the way.

I'm thinking that Angela Rayner, who strikes me as having common sense even if I don't always agree with her politics, might be better advised to sit it out this time and wait for next time. Even as deputy.

howabout · 31/12/2019 11:47

Not sure sitting it out is an option for Angela this time.

I get the impression the real contest hasn't started yet. There has been very little noise from voices outside the Corbyn shadow cabinet.

howabout · 31/12/2019 12:03

Just read the FT article.

As I feared the headline is somewhat more optimistic than the text itself - clickbait to peddle the same old doom and gloom. Sad

Interesting that it isn't peddling the myth that the answer is for 100% of the population to be Uni educated tech millionaires. Therefore fully in support of increasing the minimum wage and levelling up. Makes a refreshing change.

AutumnRose1 · 31/12/2019 12:37

Early Happy New Year all 🥂

DustyDiamond · 31/12/2019 12:40

Morning all! Brew

Great summary of the political rollercoaster of 2019 Lily 😍

The beginning of a new decade!
So much to look forward to & a genuine feeling of optimism about the future 🙌
(From a personal perspective as well as all things political)

Also agree re 'uneducated' vs educated - it's an annoyingly lazy & reductive stereotype beloved of far too many people 🙄

Anyhoo!

Lots of love & Happy New Year to all fellow Armers 🥂 🍻 🥳

I'm throwing goodwill & good luck vibes like confetti up into the ether & wishing everyone happiness & love 😍😍😍🍷🍷🍷

SilverySurfer · 31/12/2019 13:41

Hi, hope you all enjoyed Christmas/the holiday and wish you all a very happy new year.

Let the countdown begin!

Songsofexperience · 31/12/2019 15:58

I may sound a bit grinch-like but my gut feeling is that things won't be as good as leavers hope nor as a bad a remainers fear. It'll all be a bit beige in the end.

Songsofexperience · 31/12/2019 15:58

*as bad as

XingMing · 31/12/2019 16:09

Happy New Year to one and all! May 2020 bring a quieter and more conciliatory approach to life and politics, as well as health and happiness.

SingingLily · 31/12/2019 17:24

Before the fireworks start, all the very best to you and yours for the New Year. I wish you health and happiness.

DuckWillow · 31/12/2019 17:34

My thoughts entirely songs....I like your thinking about “beige”.

Am certain it’s not going to the hell that Remainers think nor the wonderful blue skies that some Leavers think. I know that people on this thread are realistic and not “blue skies” folk but there are some out there who blame all the ills of the land on the EU. I think those are the people who will in for a shock when life doesn’t change.

Meanwhile some Remainers need a reality check about the doom and gloom stuff. My only priorities apart from food is the supply of some medicines and stuff we can’t stockpile but it seems that’s all in hand now so all should be fine. Again these Remainers will be in for a shock once we leave and all stays fine.

time4chocolate · 31/12/2019 22:20

Evening punters 🍷🍷🍷

Soz for going awol since Xmas Eve, had a lovely Xmas day and Boxing Day then we all went down with the lurgy, only just feeling compos mentis today (on the plus side I may have actually lost a couple of pounds so I have some wiggle room for chocolate that hasn’t been touched yet😊).

Big thanks to Singing for keeping everyone well fed and watered🍷🍷

I have no idea what, if anything, has been going on politically or otherwise but will catch up on posts on here now.

Have put some party poppers and left over crackers at the end of the bar 🎉🎉🎉.

Wishing a happy new year to you all 🥳 🥳🥳

Ps. I have nominated myself for crappiest landlady of the year award 🥇😁

Happy new year to you all.

SingingLily · 01/01/2020 07:16

Good morning, and a very Happy New Year to one and all!

We may have to wait until 11pm on 31 January for Big Ben to mark the moment when we legally leave the EU but here in the Brexit Arms, the bells are ringing out for 2020, hope and optimism.

Here's what we are leaving behind, courtesy of Conservative Home.
It's The Story of 2019. With emojis.

Theresa May pledges Brexit by 29 March 114 times but fails. DEFEAT. 😩
She promises it by 12 April but fails. DEFEAT. 😩
She says she is not prepared to delay beyond 30 June. She fails. DEFEAT. 😩
She says that the Euro elections must not take place. They do. DEFEAT. 😧
The Conservatives come fourth with eight per cent. DEFEAT. 😱
The Conservatives drop to about 20 per cent in the polls. DEFEAT. 😱
She resigns the leadership. Boris Johnson wins.^ VICTORY^. 😁
Boris gets Parliament prorogued. The Supreme Court overrules. DEFEAT. 😲
The Tory 21 rebel and he loses his majority. DEFEAT. 😲
An extension is forced on him by the Benn Act. DEFEAT. 😱
He loses control of the HoC timetable. DEFEAT. 😱
He promises Brexit by 31 October, do or die. The HoC says no. DEFEAT. 😱
He seeks a general election and loses the vote. DEFEAT. 😩
He seeks it again and loses again. DEFEAT. 😩
His poll rating and the Conservatives’ goes up. WHAT? 🤷🏻‍♀️
He cuts a Brexit deal with Leo Varadkar. WHAT? 🤷🏻‍♀️
He presses for an election a third time. WHAT? 🤷🏻‍♀️
The SNP, then the LibDems, then Labour let him have it. OOPS. 🤦🏻‍♀️
He wins the election by a landslide. COMPLETE, TOTAL, UTTER VICTORY. 💙💃🏼🕺🎉💙

I'm looking forward to the day when we can review The Story of 2020.

Till then, here is the Arms' world-famous hangover cure to fortify you as we meet the brave new day. It's the full English: eggs, Wiltshire bacon, your choice of Lincolnshire or Cumberland sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, black pudding (from Lancashire, of course - the best!), lashings of well-buttered toast and copious mugs of Yorkshire tea. Please help yourselves.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Happy New Year everyone.
And thanks for the breakfasts, drinks, banter and memes.

I don't usually post here anymore after being bullied by Bearbehind, LeClerk, Bellini et al whenever I posted.
That is all behind us now and the new, blue government will bring hope to the whole country.

The nightmare is almost over. 31 more days. 👏👏👏👏👏😀😀😀😀

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 01/01/2020 10:12

Happy new year brexiteers!

The countdown begins! Grin
