He's not opposed to a softer Brexit. His deal was created to a) keep the ERG on side and b) antagonise the opposition into fighting tooth and nail to stop it. Hence using them to blame for it not happening.

Two things against that are that Brave Sir Boris is utterly lazy and an utter coward. I sadly think he will take the path of least resistance, which is to stay in the current direction of travel.

ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy · 13/12/2019 13:43

I dunno. There's that saying, 'Keep your friends close but your enemies closer', which could be pertinent here.

Also, look who he wheeled out to try to persuade the public during the campaign (clue: not Francois or his ilk), does that show where his true direction is?

As we've all said, many times: Boris does what's best for Boris. If he's judged the mood to mean he should do a softer Brexit so he keeps his power for longer, then that's what he'll do. He's a chameleon / shape shifter (AKA slippery bugger).

I'm to keep some form of hope going, until it's kiboshed good and proper!

ListeningQuietly · 13/12/2019 13:44

Why are people thinking that Boris will no longer play to the ERG tune ?
The Tory party has expelled its whole soft side and IS the ERG Sad

borntobequiet · 13/12/2019 13:48

Hoping if BJ wants above all to be liked - his experiences on the campaign trail must have worried him - then perhaps he will feel inclined to keep his promises re investment in deprived areas, the NHS, and soon. But I’m not holding my breath.
My tactical vote made not one jot of difference in this safe Tory seat. Embarrassingly, other tactical voters seem to have gone the other way...my judgement is v unreliable.

I'm guessing some of the Jewish community weren't surprised by the result,

Esther 9 v 1:
And in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day thereof, when the king's commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them (but it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had power over them that hated them),

borntobequiet · 13/12/2019 13:49

Oh and thanks Louise, you’re a good egg really.

placemats · 13/12/2019 13:50

The Tory Party is now the Boris Johnson Party and the ERG can go do one because as an entity it is about relevant as Momentum.

Johnson now has carte blanche to do as he pleases.

Pan2 · 13/12/2019 13:56

Just low today - not up to analysing or blaming.

Reminded to much of being woke by dad in the early hours of a summer month in 1970 for him to tell me Heath had won. I was a crushed 9 year old. It's bit like that but different.

Pan2 · 13/12/2019 13:57

High Peak tory gain, by 600 votes. Damn.

ListeningQuietly · 13/12/2019 13:58

Pan2
I just watched the chaps acceptance speech in Buxton on FB .
He did not thank the other candidates.
Very poor form.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 14:00

Jesus, even Aaron Bastani can recognise good strategy now that he doesn’t have to pretend:

Aaron Bastani
@AaronBastani
This was always the prize for the Tories - the Brexit vote was never 52/48 - leave won in 400 seats. Yesterday the Tories cracked it.

PeninsulaPanic · 13/12/2019 14:00

@thecatfromjapan you're one of my very fave posters and I knew you were working your socks off yesterday and have every right to feel let down 😡

In no way did I mean to aim my post at you, or the large majority of lovely people on these life-preserving threads ♥

TheABC · 13/12/2019 14:01

I am now working on the assumption of worst-case scenario. If it turns out to be marginally less shit than that, I will be ecstatic. I truly believe Johnson will crash us out. It's only a question of when.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 14:02

High peak. The constituency where on the day before candidate papers were due to be in, the LD candidate said he thought LDs shouldn't vote for him to help Labour keep the seat

And there were 500 votes in it...

Cat I am a Labour Party member so will be voting in the leadership election. I think we need a leader or a deputy leader who understands working class communities, not just London based ardent remainer types, so definitely not Emily Thornberry. I personally like Kier Starmer but not sure if he would connect with working class voters. Lisa Nandy would be my choice, she's calm, thoughtful and measured, I also quite like Angela Rayner, just heard Lucy Powell on BBC News and liked what she had to say too. Not keen on Jess Philips who gets mentioned alot, think she's a bit marmite. I've said for months/years that Labour would lose Northern leave voting seats if it moved towards a second referendum so I was saddened but not surprised with the result. What are your thoughts on who the next leader should be ?

PeninsulaPanic · 13/12/2019 14:14

Thanks @RedToothBrush

Yes, the internal bickering and sniping has deeply soured proceedings within Labour, and some of the radical left have behaved rabidly. I've known that but still hoped it mightn't have the impact on the GE that it so obviously has. One way or another, at this point in history it seems inevitable now that we've swung to one extreme of the two possible alternatives, and it actually feels that basic. I was a kid in the 70s and I don't remember the way it played out other than how it impacted upon our family. Was a very tough context for us. Now I see how it happens and while I might have the resources to swim rather than sink (and only time will tell) I'm painfully aware that so many don't. I feel helpless for them, hence my difficulty in looking coolly at the facts. But I really appreciate your explanation, it helps Smile

Hmmmm

That's great! It starts with an earthquake,
Birds and snakes, an aeroplane;
and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn.
World serves its own needs, don't mis-serve your own needs.
Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no strength.
The ladder starts to clatter with fear of height, down height.
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
In a government for hire and a combat site.
Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry
With the furies breathing down your neck.

Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop.
Look at that low plane! Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, Common Food,
But it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself.
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed.
Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right, right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light;
Feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

Six o'clock. TV hour.
Don't get caught in foreign tower.
Slash and burn, return,
Listen to yourself churn.
Lock him in uniform and book burning, bloodletting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive.
Step down, step down.
Watch a heel crush, crush.
Uh oh, this means no fear; cavalier.
Renegade and steer clear!
A tournament, a tournament,
A tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
And I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine (It's time I had some time alone)
I feel fine

It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine (It's time I had some time alone)

The other night I tripped a nice
Continental drift divide.
Mountains sit in a line.
Leonard Bernstein, Leonid Brezhnev,
Lenny Bruce, and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly beans, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam, but neck, right? (Right!)

thecatfromjapan · 13/12/2019 14:20

Violet I honestly, genuinely don't know, as regards Labour leader. 😁 That's why I'm asking!!!!

I also think there's a difference between a. Who the members will elect b. Who i'd like c. Who might be a good, unifying choice within the Party d. Who might be a Leader that appealed to the U.K.

(D) is especially difficult because, my goodness, the UK is fragmented.

I, personally, do not feel excited by any of the front runners. 🤷‍♀️

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 13/12/2019 14:21

Quote fail but REM were obviously prophetic. It just came on amazon music and seemed appropriate.

As you were.

bellinisurge · 13/12/2019 14:22

Not really seen much of Lisa Nandy before - even though she's pretty near me. Seen her a lot on TV over the past few hours. She's good.

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 14:23

I am hoping Johnson's 'minor reshuffle shuffles Dorries off the front benches and back to the rear end where she belongs? Any chance?

Piggywaspushed · 13/12/2019 14:26

I'd like Andy Burnham back.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/12/2019 14:26

Pmk

Jess Phillips is not Northern. There are many excellent women politicians from the North and despite Labour's dismal defeat there are now more female Labour MPs, 104 in total than male Labour MPs, 99.
