Exit poll

Con majority of 68.

65 seats regarded technically as still too close to call. But that could mean an even bigger majority.

Blyth Valley has seen a 10% swing to the cons in line with the exit poll. 1st shock of the night

@ChrisLeslieUK

We warned this would happen. We tried everything we could to prevent the hard-left self-indulgence within the Labour Party. And now the country will pay the price. I’m so sorry too few within Labour took a stand with us, when it would have mattered.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 13/12/2019 02:50

Yes I’m pleased for Rosie Duffield.

FoldyRoll · 13/12/2019 02:51

Ruth Smeeth kicking OFF

DippyAvocado · 13/12/2019 02:52

The Tories have taken Redcar, Burnley and Ynes Môn from Labour, as well as West Bromwich West and Bishop Auckland.

Can't believe how well BJ's tactics in the North have paid off. It looks like votes for the Brexit party have saved Labour in quite a lot of other northern towns.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 13/12/2019 02:53

Yep, if you can, emigrate

If you can't, you're probably fucked

Please don’t Big Choc. There are people on here including those caring for sick and disabled family members for whom emigration is simply not a possibility. We are just going on to to get on with it as best we can. Being told we are ‘probably fucked’ is extremely unhelpful for those of us who are already sick with worry.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 02:54

cons have westminster.

umunna 13k lab 11k cons win with 17k.

WOW, what is happening in NI

First, the Alliance beating the DUP in North Down,

Now John Finucane beat Nigel Dodds (DUP) Shock

Is NI generally showing a swing away from Unionism to the moderate Alliance and the Nationalists - maybe because of changing demographics -
or are the DUP being punished by Unionists for having made such a hash of protecting the Union ?

The DUPes pushed hard for Brexit thinking it would wreck the GFA and put off Irish reunification ....

Well, that's what happens when you get into bed with hard right Tories
They kick you out onto the cold hard floor

tobee · 13/12/2019 02:56

cons have westminster.

In more ways than one.

Hmm tactical voting in Wokingham

Dusty01 · 13/12/2019 02:57

Both candidates came in to talk to sixth-formers. DH said the sixth-formers preferred IDS (depressing)

Gosh that is depressing. Faiza is brilliant. She's passionate, intelligent - so much more but too tired to articulate ...that says a lot about the place. We've thought about moving there ... but I've always had my doubts and what you've just said strengthens them.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 02:57

BCF DH says Alliance are current up 18.9% in NI.

I think we know why.

wherearemychickens · 13/12/2019 02:58

Nigel Dodds gone.

DippyAvocado · 13/12/2019 03:00

Lots of electoral pacts between the other parties to take seats away from the DUP in NI I believe?

Dusty01 · 13/12/2019 03:00

The whole things a mess really isn't it. That's what it looks to my tired mind now.

I like Beth Rigby. Wish I could have remembered word for word what she said about our politics and our country changing dramatically as a result of this election.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 03:00

Good riddance to Nigel Dodds. Hope the intransigence was worth it!

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/12/2019 03:01

Nigel Dodds lost to Sinn Fein in N Belfast

Looks like DUP will lose their majority in HOC (Radio 4 coverage)

tobee · 13/12/2019 03:01

Needed chocolate but could only find some Cadbury's Palm Oil special. Jealousy thinking of a certain someone's Lindt Drawer. 🤨

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 13/12/2019 03:01

Why did Chuka run in a safe Tory seat?

Hazardexhausted · 13/12/2019 03:02

Birmingham seats should start rolling in now.

FoldyRoll · 13/12/2019 03:03

Completely agree, SingingBabooshkaBadly. What we don't need is even more 'I'm alright Jack' and punching down.

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 03:05

Nigel Dodds lost to Sinn Fein in N Belfast

Increase in number of abstentionist MPs increases size of effective Conservative majority by 1... Wink

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2019 03:05

LDs have 3 candidates for leader now...

Hugh Evans@HughCHEvans
Lib Dems just lost a seat. Con gain Eastbourne. #GeneralElection2019

Stephen Lloyd had the whip removed by the LDs and was an independent until the election was called when it was then reinstated (i didn't realise they had). He was pro a deal not revoke.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/12/2019 03:06

@red What do you see as the key difference 2017 / 2019 GEs ?

May being exposed as such a robotic campaigner - and hence BJ hiding in fridges etc ?
or her being a Remainer whom Leavers didn't fully trust ?

Tory 2019 campaign going all out deception and big lies ?

Or all those months when Remainer MPs blocked every attempt at any kind of Brexit ?

Corbyn, dim as he is, didn't change

tobee · 13/12/2019 03:11

Beth Rigby (and my Dh) say in 2017 that May was rubbish, and that Corbyn was unknown. Plus brexit for those extra months.

Just thinking, Labour might need a long, dark night (or months) of the soul, but what's LibDem excuse?
