So...5 more years of tory "rule"?

It's looking like a tory win (however small a majority that may be...)

For those of use on the front line dealing with those who the tories and their supporters deem disposable, what plans/strategies are you putting in place for yourselves and your family?

I wanted to leave the UK after the EU ref - my country isn't what I thought it was - but dh said no and now we are too old and the dc are at critical stages of their education so...

Add to that frail elderly family members so that's that.

Aside from stockpiling food and meds (I would urge all those with chronic conditions to do so...) and stop all but basic spending, what can we do to mitigate the horrors that are about to unfold?

I will plan for my job in the homelessness sector to become even busier while my pay stays pitiful. We are lucky that we have a lot of equity in our house and could move elsewhere but I refuse to leave my lovely city (which will hopefully remain Labour at least) while there is so much to do for people. And if that sounds like I'm a martyr, sod it - I'm as far from that as is possible but I actually give a shit about the people who aren't as fortunate as we are - which we haven't always been.!

BlackeyedSusan · 11/12/2019 08:54

Look after each other.
Donate to food banks.

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 08:55

I run a foodbank.

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 08:57

I also have 3 other voluntary roles.
But I'm 1 person.
And it feels like SO many people simply do not care about schools, the nhs, the vulnerable.
Like nothing bad could ever happen to them or their families!?
It's so depressing.

Scaremongering Hmm

And no, I'm not a Tory worshiper. But to describe the events that follow if Conservative win is bonkers.

Same old drudgery, not a horror show though

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 08:59

Well I think the privatisation of the nhs and more underfunding of education and demonising of the poor snd vulnerable is horrific.

Obv some won't agree.

@Stinky can I ask what the most valuable donations in terms of need are for food banks? I want to include things in my donations that are overlooked or in shortage but I don’t know what they are.

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:01

Your local one should have s shoppinglist on their website but from experience we are always short of:
Uht milk
Uht juice
Tinned fish
Tinned meat
Tinned Rice pudding
Sponge puddings
Tea
Coffee

Thank you x

What evidence is there that it'll actually be made private?

And how on earth can you consider voting for someone who sympathises with terrorists and comes up with ridiculous ideas like 4 day working weeks, and McDonald's workers on 30K

Mrsmummy90 · 11/12/2019 09:03

I'm genuinely scared for tomorrow's result. I depend heavily on the NHS and am so scared of it going private. I also live next door to a food bank so see a lot of poverty stricken people that need help that the Tories just won't offer.

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:04

Corbyn supported the peace process and as such met with the IRA (as did bill clinton and john major...)
The only party to openly support terrorists is the tory party wirh their C&S deal with the political wing of the UDF....
But don't let facts get on your way....

Thank you @Stinkyeddie

Echobelly · 11/12/2019 09:07

DH wants to move to Canada... I'm not leaving everything I know and love for anything short of existential threat to our lives! I agree it's mostly going to be more drudgery, for us at least. But I recognise far worse for less privileged people. Xmas Sad

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:07

mummy
I've been trying to be positive but...
The cognative disonance is scary.
Ch 4 dispatches have proof the tories have met with US big pharma.
But no one seems to care about proof and fscts anymore...
It's all soundbites and fb posts (most of which originate from Russia or the US)

OP posts:
Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:10

I sadly think you will be in for a nasty shock echo

5 more years of drudgery?

Or 5 more years of the UK moving to a far right dictatorship??

Check out p.48 of the tory manifesto!

They plan to totally change the courts and rig them with their picks. Rather like the US.

I'm staggered that this ^ hasn't got more traction.

The UK as we have all known it is finished.

Sorry. Bit doom mongery today :(

MrsMaiselsMuff · 11/12/2019 09:16

I can't believe people are describing the effects of austerity as 'drudgery'. Must be nice sat in that ivory tower.

If you're doing well, if you're comfortable and have no financial or health concerns that's awesome, I hope things continue that way. If that is your position, then can I ask you to vote for a party that will help those who do not have that security? Women living with a violent partner, who cannot leave because refuges have shut down and benefit cuts means she can't afford private rent. Cancer patients waiting over two months just to start life saving treatment. People in mental health crisis who cannot get any support.

Vote for a party that values everyone.

GlassOfPort · 11/12/2019 09:17

What evidence is there that it'll actually be made private?

There is evidence that Johnson has been meeting with US lobbyst to discuss access of US companies to NHS services.

John Major (not exactly Corbyn's greatest fan..) famously said that "The NHS is about as safe with Johnson as a pet hamster would be with a hungry python".

Labour would introduce a 4-day working week over a decade, if they are able to form a majority government, which is not going to happen.

So, to answer you original question, I am voting Labour as I am hoping that a hung parliament will stop the tories from inflicting more damage to schools and hospitals.

In the meantime, I have set up a direct debit with the Trussel Trust, so I can contribute a little to mitigate the effects of those policies.

MistiMorning · 11/12/2019 09:17

I'm leaving on Friday. Kids have dual nationality, no reason to stay. Think Johnson will win but a hung parliament although better will just lead to another election and more desperate right wing targeting of anyone who is not British enough (including British people).

Not my country any more.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 11/12/2019 09:18

Stinky, I've seen people that favour the courts having reduced powers against the state. They think it's about terrorists and their human rights. They don't realise it's actually their own rights that are being usurped.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 11/12/2019 09:18

Don’t be too sure.
Labour could still win.

And then it’s paradise for the many not the few.

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:19

Sorry misti bon voyage x

I'd love to believe that but as upthread ^ the right wing msm has made lying so normalised no one can seem to tell the difference anymore...

DH already has several offers of jobs abroad and if things get much worse in the NHS then I think we will have to look at those as options as otherwise burnout is a real problem. He's already had to start looking at his set up for taking on more private work because the situation on just doing the nhs work is untenable and the solutions currently given by the government are unworkable and in some cases probably illegal Hmm
We are both lucky in being very employable internationally but we wouldn't take that move lightly. My mother is heavily reliant on the care system and due to her dementia moving her is not really a viable option however I am aware she doesn't have that many more years left but I worry about the pressure the system is under. We pay for her care but there are real shortages in staff across the board.
