Brexit

So...5 more years of tory "rule"?

Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 08:50

It's looking like a tory win (however small a majority that may be...)

For those of use on the front line dealing with those who the tories and their supporters deem disposable, what plans/strategies are you putting in place for yourselves and your family?

I wanted to leave the UK after the EU ref - my country isn't what I thought it was - but dh said no and now we are too old and the dc are at critical stages of their education so...

Add to that frail elderly family members so that's that.

Aside from stockpiling food and meds (I would urge all those with chronic conditions to do so...) and stop all but basic spending, what can we do to mitigate the horrors that are about to unfold?

OP posts:
Stinkyeddie · 11/12/2019 09:24

wonky
It's hard isn't it?
But...if you and your dh have the skills, I'd go :(
Dh and I have left it too late

@youcanonlydraftthefuture

*Scaremongering

And no, I'm not a Tory worshiper. But to describe the events that follow if Conservative win is bonkers.

Same old drudgery, not a horror show though*

May not be a horror show for you. But for others it really actually is.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 11/12/2019 10:17

How the hell is a record number of food banks in one of the richest nations on earth not a horror show?

ChaiNashta · 11/12/2019 10:32

I agree, we'll need to look out for each other, especially the most vulnerable in society.
We had quite a lot of donations for the harvest assembly at my DC's school. I was thinking at the time that it would be a good idea to have Food Bank operated donation bins in schools (like they have in supermarkets) and perhaps a used uniform donation bin too.

AlphaJura · 11/12/2019 11:10

A used uniform bin would be a great idea. I've struggled before and had to ask for any unclaimed lost property. I asked at my local council about school uniform grants and apparently they don't do them any more. They said go to the local Lyons club who just humiliated me by offering food tokens? Not much help to me at the time. Most council uniform grants have been axed. I did hear that Jeremy Corbyn's constituency is the only one still offering the full grant.

Morgan12 · 11/12/2019 11:20

Omg I'm so sick of people saying 'how do you know the NHS will be privatised?'

Erm, because it's happening already?
Because the Tories are a bunch of capitalist pricks?

Do some research. Honestly it doesn't take long. Stop letting other people tell you and fo find out yourself!

And thank you so, so very much for fucking us all over. Hope your grandchildren and great grandchildren will be proud.

I can only hope this week means the death of the union.

Danetobe · 11/12/2019 12:17

The average worker in Denmark works less then 32 hours a week and earns over to 50k (£). Denmark equivalent also regularly has a surplus of money at the end of the year.

A 32 hour working week and a proper salary for mere McDonald's workers is perfectly possible.

Don’t be too downbeat. It’s so close in many constituencies. If everyone can vote tactically we can absolutely deny the Tories a majority... but we have to ditch tribalism. Vote for the candidate most likely to beat your local Tory. Pinch your nose if you have to.

FFSSSS · 11/12/2019 14:21

I'm in the middle of applying for a visa so that my DH can move here from Australia. It seemed like the best way was for him to come here. But the entire time I'm wondering if I should go there instead (despite the heat, higher cost of living etc).

MockersFactCheckMN · 11/12/2019 15:16

The word is the postal votes are a boost for the Conservatives.

The TV & Radio vox pops suggest there is a swapping of some working-class tribal Labour voters who are Brexity enough and don't like Corbyn to vote Tory, against which there are the middle-class small-c conservatives who are appalled by Johnson and may vote tactically.

Post-2015, there was a detailed piece of research from the Fabian Society about the mountain Labour would have to climb to regain power by recapturing the middle-ground. Momentum came along and threw that in the bin, assuring us all they had a cunning plan to energise the dissaffected and apathetic, who would rise up in their thousands the way revolutionaries persistently predict, to no avail.

We seem to have a few more young folks, especially students, on the register and voting Labour, but they are a declining demographic who can never replace the old dyed-in-the-wool unionised Labour voters dying off with time.

Johnson will be found out. Brexit will go on and on and on. The Conservatves will replace him and reinvent themselves like they had nothing to do with it, and a Labour Party that abandons the centre in favour of evangelical socialism will always fail, not that it will stop the evangelicals from calling for it with their constantly re-wiped goldfish memories.

Roll On Death.

frumpety · 11/12/2019 17:04

Do they count the postal votes before election night then Mockers ?

MockersFactCheckMN · 11/12/2019 17:56

Do they count the postal votes before election night then Mockers ?

Absolutely not. Don't think they're allowed to open them. But they will note where they're coming from, what sort of wards with what sort of voting records. It's all scuttlebutt.

The text-book election that shifted at the 'last minute' was 1970 when bad trade figures and a poor performance by Wilson on Panorama is credited with shifting enough votes for a Heath majority. All that happened in the week before the week of polling Thursday.

otter Are you friends with an Aaron on FB? He posted that exact post, word for word Grin

SheOfManyNames · 11/12/2019 20:59

I am in the process of applying for Irish citizenship, but it's a bit of a nightmare as my parent has no state ID! (no passport and doesn't drive, doesn't want either). I would feel much better if I knew I still had the right to live/work in the other EU countries.
I am lucky in that I am in a secure job in a sector that will always need staff. So personally I think I will be OK, better off than many.
My disabled family members may not be though.

amd4578 · 11/12/2019 21:39

Jesus Christ... get a grip, i don't personally like either of them but the tosh that is coming out of your mouths is laughable... Stock piling food??? for what?? in case Brexit increases the price of tuna by 20p a tin..

If the Tories win it will be a maximum of 4 years until the next election. In the grand scheme of things that is a minuscule amount of time and if everything does go tits up then im sure labour will come in and save us all..

Its actually like some people believe they are going to wake up and the country will just be in flames..

ListeningQuietly · 11/12/2019 21:50

This election - no matter what the outcome - will solve nothing

I will lay money that there will be another one within a year
it will not "resolve Brexit" --because that is impossible

I have my suspicions about what will happen over the next week depending on the outcome
none of it is pretty

am considering moving abroad to a more open country
