New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

BCF Victorian Darwinism in plain sight.
The irony is Bridgen himself would be well to the left on the evolutionary line up.

derxa · 05/11/2019 18:58

Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit Minister can't or won't answer a simple question about Labour's position on Brexit. It was nothing like that. KS answered clearly and competently but he knows that his party leader doesn't believe in Remain. That was the problem.

And people were betting which party was going to split first, Labour or the Tories?

There are cracks, if not a full split. The Tories gave basically split from their one-nation, sane wing represented by MPs like Grieve, Hammond, Bebb, Soubry, Wollastan.

Icantreachthepretzels · 05/11/2019 19:04

Trending on twitter (where Andrew Bridgen has now reached the dizzying height of No1) #torystory

twitter.com/search?q=%23ToryStory&src=trend_click

People are making their own posters about the suffering they experienced under the tories and are sticking them up in their local areas. I think there are a fair few posters on here who could tell very similar tales.

derxa · 05/11/2019 19:05

Neither the fire brigade or the residents of Grenfell are to blame (and certainly aren't stupid) because crooked builders and local councils short changed them.
Those poor people. Sad

dontcallmelen · 05/11/2019 19:06

Chanel four news & the huge increase in food bank use, on at the moment.

Mistigri · 05/11/2019 19:08

Pretzels what a fantastic post

thecatfromjapan · 05/11/2019 19:11

Dusty I'm sure you were just fine.
Absolute respect to you being out there.
Canvassers are the absolute backbone of the election.
You're a 🌟.

thecatfromjapan · 05/11/2019 19:12

Yes, fantastic post, Pretzels.

And #ToryStory on Twitter is worth a look.

Grinchly · 05/11/2019 19:13

Here here Pretzels 👋

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2019 19:31

"those things happen to other people not people like me" is the mentality that some have.

I echo what pretzel says. In an extreme disaster situation NO ONE knows exactly how they will handle it until they are in that situation. As much as you can rehearse for it, you don't know what you will do until it unfolds. Nasa spend years training astronauts for disaster situations to keep them calm and able to respond effectively to a situation based on the advice from others and what they can see themselves. And that relationship of trust in others on the ground as well as their crew mates is utterly essential. We trust authorities for a reason. If that breaks down, that's when we get incidents like Columbia. It is a universal principle.

I note that Mogg apologised but Bridgen defended him AFTER that.

And there in lies the point. It's like Trumpisms. The point has been made and even if there is a reverse ferret its then 'out there' for others to agree with no matter how dreadful it is.

Get used to it as its a pattern we will see. And it's to cover for other issues (note the stuff about blocking Russia today).

Plus its a way of diverting from other parties starting to take control of the narrative.

A couple of journalists have pointed out that Labour were winning the narrative war all weekend and the Tories were all at sea.

So ignore the dead cats and focus on what narrative others are setting. No matter how awful the moggie is.

I'm told Sir Mark Sedwill made the decision to block the publication of HMT costings of Labour policies this afternoon after a lengthy conversation Sir Tom Scholar

Comes after John McDonnell raised concerns in call with Scholar

Javid understood to be furious about it

tobee · 05/11/2019 19:31

Brilliant pretzels!

I'm always so impressed by posters for insight, erudition and knowledge on here. Feel like lucky to be here. Don't say that enough Smile

TheMShip · 05/11/2019 19:32

Pretzels that was fantastic. You should be writing this stuff for publication, your passion shines like a spotlight.

Can we all try contacting Led by Donkeys about #ToryStory? It's something they could get behind or mentor others to help organize in a bigger way?

SwedishEdith · 05/11/2019 19:38

Just listened to the Bridgen thing. How, precisely, are the Tories going to continue their 'people against parliament' approach when they clearly detest the actual people?

After 35 years as MP for the Cynon Valley constituency, I have given my final speech in the House of Commons. I am very sorry to be leaving as I have so much unfinished business to attend to. This is not the end, just another chapter in my life! #Westminster

@Icantreachthepretzels - you forgot the very poor building regs- which need reform ...... but that will make buildings more expensive, so less profit for the developers

Nick Conrad leaves BBC Radio Norfolk in bid to become MP

Broadland Conservatives are yet to declare who will be standing for the seat.

The group said it would not comment until after Wednesday's hustings.

Mr Conrad, 34, began his media career at the age of 14 working as a junior sports reporter, making him the youngest radio professional in the country at the time.

He joined the BBC 12 years ago and also writes a weekly column for the Eastern Daily Press newspaper.

The father of three was recognised for his outstanding contribution at the Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Friendly Awards in 2016.

But he came under fire in 2014 when he said women should "keep their knickers on" during a live debate about a high-profile rape case.

He apologised for the comments and no further action was taken by Ofcom, the radio industry watchdog.

A lurker popping up to applaud pretzels. A fantastic post.

BestIsWest · 05/11/2019 19:45

Where do they find these people?

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 05/11/2019 19:47

@TheMShip could they be tagged into it on Twitter? I'm not on twitter so don't know how it all works but I'm guessing it's possible to do?

Mistigri · 05/11/2019 19:47

They find then in the same sewer that the BXP are mining for potential candidates.

"Stoke North [BXP] parliamentary hopeful Daniel Rudd used the term ‘gimmi-grunts’ on Twitter and says people who move to the UK just ‘take what they can’. He also shared a video purportedly showing Muslims attacking Hindus in another country with the caption ‘Just another day in London.’ The candidate, who says in his Twitter bio that he wants to ‘change politics for good’ also made a comment about stopping animal testing and carrying it out on remainers instead."

But he came under fire in 2014 when he said women should "keep their knickers on" during a live debate about a high-profile rape case.

No way. Is that for real? He can forget about Norfolk Woman’s vote, then.

Sebastian Payne @SebastianePayne
The bellwether of #ge2019: north east Wales. If the Tories win Clwyd, it means they’ve broken through the ‘red wall’ of traditional Labour areas and could be set for significant gains in the north, midlands and beyond.

My latest @FinancialTimes column
[]t.co/S37jL0h]]

What is the 'red wall' of seats?

"The wall starts on the north coast of Wales, goes through Merseyside and sweeps across to Humberside. Behind the red wall are dozens of seats that would have 20,000 Tory majorities if they were in the south of England."

Why is Boris Johnson focusing on seats behind the 'red wall'?

Because he has no other choice. The Tories are set to lose seats to nationalists in Scotland, liberals in England and socialists in cities. Brexit-supporting areas are the only obvious gains.

The theory of this is people want Brexit mire than they hate the Tories.

Which is an interesting one...
