Brexit

GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 11:10

Just that really! The General Election is on, either 11th Dec or a few days before but it's going to happen now that Labour have agreed. Tactical voting websites are being prepared as we speak.

If you are a remainer, who will you vote for?

(And if any leavers lurk here, will you vote for Tories or Brexit party?)

Quite. Calling oneself a 'democrat' is a fairly fluid thing.

There was nothing democratic about the referendum.

Jaffacakebeast · 29/10/2019 13:20

Life long lab voter here, leaver. I will vote for Tory, while dying a little bit inside

averylongtimeago · 29/10/2019 13:21

Right now, unless you are a true blue Brexit supporter, the only thing to do is vote tactically.

So you have issues with Corbyn?
Not keen on the Lib Dems after the coalition?

Think: which would be worse?
Labour or labour plus libdems or Boris the liar and the right wing Tory
Party in for 5 years.

5 years to go for the hardest Brexit possible.
5 years to sell off the NHS.
5 years to have a bonfire of workers rights, food standards and environmental protections.

I’m really conflicted. I’m a remainer but I also believe we’ve had the vote and brexit should now happen as it was voted for and that how democracy works wether it’s the outcome I want or not.

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 13:21

OP here. An interesting response.

I'm surprised by the number of people who don't seem to be voting tactically based on their constituency. Also surprised remainers are considering wasting their vote.

I am remain and utterly anti-Tory / anti-Austerity. Though I can't stand Corbyn, and wish Kier Starmer was leader, my feeling is the Tories are strides ahead at the moment.

So to those who are worried about Corbyn being in no. 10 if Labour did manage to reverse the predicted polls and actually gain over the Tories, they would almost certainly never get a majority, and we would therefore (best case scenario) have a coalition / minority gov supported by Lib/Green/SNP etc. This form of gov would satisfy me because

  1. The Tories / Johnson would be OUT
  2. Corbyn wouldn't have enough power to do any of the very extreme things people are scared about. But the country would start to head generally in the correct direction- left and back towards the centre after years of Tory destruction.

Many of Labour's policies are centrist and popular (NHS, transport, education) and these would be supported by a left/lib parliament. The more extreme things that people are scared of (eg closing the city of London) would never be voted through.

So, remainers- lets vote tactically! Based on our constituency, and ultimately against Tories! 💪🏽

I live in a very safe Labour seat in London. Which way should I vote? I want to vote lib dem as I'd like to revoke, but is there any point in such a safe seat?

London seats will be hugely volatile at this election so voting in 2017 won’t be an especially good predictor.... I noticed a poll in Finchley & Golders Green constituency recent in the BritainElects website had LibDems winning the seat with a decent majority on a 37% swing... normally a Tory seat with Labour breathing down their necks. Another poll suggested LDs and Tories neck and neck in Cities of London & Westminster.

gottastopeatingchocolate · 29/10/2019 13:22

You know you can vote for a party's policies, not just their leader, right?
I agree with this. The party leaders and the media are pushing us more and more to focus on the personalities of the party leaders. Don't let's fall into that trap.

For those who are opting to spoilt their ballot paper - while I respect your choice, I wonder what that will achieve? You might as well stay home in the warm, surely?

BUT - to those who choose not to vote, I urge you all to reconsider. Your vote matters, and your vote counts. I suspect the choice of a mid December election is deliberate in hoping to keep the turnout low. There is nothing more frustrating to me than people who tell me they are remain/leave and then go on to say that they didn't vote in the referendum. If they had, the result might have been different - and would certainly have been more representative.

Brexit IS a big issue, and will undoubtedly be at the forefront of people's choices, but each party will be sending out their manifesto, so we can all be informed about the bigger picture. Bear in mind that it is unlikely at this stage that one party will have a massive majorty, so any policies that you are worried about, look to the other parties to see if they will support them. Where two or more parties are on the same page, the policies are more likely to be supported.

I personally will follow the tactical vote websites closely, as I am in a very marginal seat and I want the current Conservative MP out. This tactical vote information will be readily available on line - anyone who says they don't know how to vote tactically, just google!

Our FPTP system is no longer fit for purpose, in my opinion. But if you look at the parties in order of preference, it might help you decide which way to vote. For example, the worst case scenario for me would be Conservative/Brexit party alliance, so I will vote any way that prevents that, pretty much. (That's easy to say as my only real voting choices are LibDem, Labour or Green). For those saying that talk of such an alliance has gone quiet... I suspect that it would, given that the conservatives wouldn't want to put off potential Conservative voters who might struggle to support the Brexit party.

I really hope that people don't succumb to apathy and resentment of the personailities involved, and get out and vote.

WarwickLife · 29/10/2019 13:23

@averylongtimeago I couldn't agree more

Remainer, traditionally a Labour voter. So fed up with Corbyn being worse than useless on Brexit, but have a decent and pro-Remain Labour MP so would probably, reluctantly, vote labour again. If they put a second referendum in their manifesto that will clinch it. Don't trust Lib Dems and never in a million years would I vote Tory.

crankyassnoperope · 29/10/2019 13:29

Ach, reading all of this has just made me donate to the Labour party. I guess that's no bad thing.

Good news for Labour voters too, the Office for Budget Responsibility has announced that it plans to publish revised economic forecasts on 7 November.

TatianaLarina · 29/10/2019 13:30

Labour Remainer, I’m voting LD.

As things stand a vote for Labour is a vote for Brexit - and it will be explicitly used as such whichever Brexit favouring party gets in. We have been told repeatedly that X number of people voted for Brexit at the last election via their party.

FishesaPlenty · 29/10/2019 13:30

Lifelong LD voter in a Lab area and I'm going to have to vote Labour this time I think.

Knowing the local 'man in the pub' I'm worried Labour will lose enough votes to BXP to give the Conservative a chance.

TatianaLarina · 29/10/2019 13:30

Absolutely labour as I support jezza 100%

Kin ell.

TorchesTorches · 29/10/2019 13:31

I am a remainer abs will be voting tactically. In my constituency the current labour mp is strongly anti Brexit and votes in the way i would like in Parliament. She also does lots of other good stuff. She is sadly probably deluded in her understanding what a woman is, but i will hold my nose and vote for her as Brexit is a more important issue and she has a good majority . If she steps down i will reassess.

GlassOfPort · 29/10/2019 13:31

Remainer, immensely frustrated by Corbyn's lack of leadership over Brexit and anti-Semitism.

Having said that, I will probably vote Labour because there are still plenty of decent people and good MPs in the party. I also don't think that Corbyn's policies are hard left, as many of them (no university fees, state ownership of energy companies) are very mainstream in the rest of Europe.

Grafittiqueen · 29/10/2019 13:31

There's no one I can really vote for. I won't vote Conservative for obvious reasons. I don't trust Corbyn over Brexit, it's obvious he is a leaver but too much of a fence sitter to come out and say so, so a vote for Labour would be a vote for brexit imho. SNP just want independence and Scexit and Brexit are two cheeks of the same arse, so no way am I voting for more constitutional upheaval.

Even if the greens were standing in Scotland, they're just the eco wing of the SNP so no vote from me.

I may be forced to vote Lib Dem, but not happy over their stance on women's rights, specifically our right to single sex spaces.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/10/2019 13:32

I’m really conflicted. I’m a remainer but I also believe we’ve had the vote and brexit should now happen as it was voted for and that how democracy works wether it’s the outcome I want or not.

It's NOT how democracy works. And doubly not how UK democracy works.

Beveren · 29/10/2019 13:32

Lib Dem. Used to be conservative, but Johnson is a total no-no.

TatianaLarina · 29/10/2019 13:32

My Tory MP is one of the few strong anti-Brexit Tories prepared to vote against the government. But she will likely lose her seat.

InMySpareTime · 29/10/2019 13:33

Remainer, usually a floating voter but will vote Labour this time.
My current Tory MP takes no notice of his constituents (replies with proforma letters or emails and always toes the party line despite representing a remain constituency).
Labour candidate is currently leader of the council and very on the ball with local issues.
It was a safe blue seat but has become much more marginal lately, certainly swingable if enough people turn out.

JacquesHammer · 29/10/2019 13:36

Will vote tactically for the candidate most likely to beat the Brexity Tory in my constituency

Yes this.

TatianaLarina · 29/10/2019 13:37

It’s NOT how democracy works. And doubly not how UK democracy works.

It’s how Nazi Germany worked. Referendums being an easily manipulable popular vote to give fascism/proto-fascism the veneer of democractic mandate.

How anyone can call the last referendum democratic given the corruption we now know was involved, I’ve no idea.

TheSultanofPingu · 29/10/2019 13:39

Same dilemma as me Fishes. It's depressing isn't it!
And for the poster who couldn't understand any remainers voting other than libdem, would you be happy with your constituency being run by the Brexit party?

Ellabella989 · 29/10/2019 13:40

Remainer and will vote Lib Dem

Hazardd · 29/10/2019 13:42

I'll be voting tactically which in my area is likely to be labour.

Just like to point out that Tories have created unprecedented medicine shortages.

To anyone who votes tory or any "remainer" who has the luxury to throw a tantrum and not vote... Your contributing to far right cunts.
