Westminstenders: Extension or No Extension

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2019 08:26

Johnson has sent a letter he said he never would asking for an extension.

We now wait to see what the EU come back with.

It's likely to be a technical extension. At best.

France are really not happy with the idea of an extension and Macron is flexing his muscles with the EU at the moment. He has been prepared to upset all the other EU countries as he proved with blocking progress on accession to the EU for Northern Macedonia and Albania this week. Macron is fighting his own domestic battles.

It looks as if Johnson now has a majority for a deal. What that deal will ultimately look like will be dictated by the Withdrawal Agreement Bill which sets out implementation of the Withdrawal Act.

However, with the DUP firmly offside the chances of a vote of no confidence go up. As do the chances of an election.

And its also worth pointing out that whilst the WAB is legally binding if we have an election and Johnson gets a majority, then there can always be changes made to domestic law. (implementation of the WA rather than the agreement principles of the WA agreed with the EU).

Thus any 'assurances' over workers rights and regulatory standards are only as good as long as this parliament...

Wonder how much it will take the DUP to turn again to BJ

The DUP are otherwise occupied. They're off to Stormont to sit among themselves and talk to the walls in the hope this will stave off abortion and equal marriage.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 13:39

Were you there on Saturday? Oh didnt realise not being on a march robbed me of my ability to have an opinion, is anyone else expected to meet that requirement or just me as a Corbyn fan?

Did you hear the chants of Where's Jeremy Corbyn? He was in Liverpool campaigning

He cannot unify his own party, let alone the nation. The only party leader that is not willing to ignore either side of the referendum, wasnt that the original bitching point? What about us the 48% Now like with the cult of Brexit that unless its the Brexit I voted for (not me personally obvs) then its not Brexit, if Corbyn doesnt do exactly what I think he should be doing then hes useless [eye roll]

Hoooo · 21/10/2019 13:42

Corbyn as leader has been a godsend for the tories and brexshitters.

Any decent leader would have got off the fence and decided on a policy on brexshit.

If there is a GE labour will be annhilated.

DGRossetti · 21/10/2019 13:43

Wonder how much it will take the DUP to turn again to BJ

The problem he has is that they simply won't believe him. So anything he offers has to be in writing and something that actually gets delivered. They aren't going to fall for anything less.

So the question is: what can BJ promise them that is within his gift to deliver ?

And since he is leading a minority government that has lost at least 9 of the last 9 votes, I'm really struggling to think. Especially as I suspect Dominic Cummings is not the sort of guy who uses carrots when sticks are cheaper.

I'm guessing the Boris tactic is to try and scare the DUP into siding with him. I wonder how that'll work out ?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 13:45

Any decent leader would have got off the fence and decided on a policy on brexshit.

They have a policy disingenous to suggest otherwise

Those of you who want Corbyn to pivot to straight Remain (which he will in a PV vs a Tory deal) and if he cant time travel and become a die hard remainer from birth then he's just fucking useless, what do you think Labour should put on the literature in the constituencies that voted leave a straight 'Fuck You' or do you want them to be a bit more tactful?

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 13:46

Crikey and this is before any amendments
MPs need time to study this, to check the twisty weasels haven't sneaked anything in

Beth Rigby@BethRigby

NEW: Hearing from sources on opposition & govt side that WAB expected c6pm tonight after urgent Qs & statements.

Sources tell me it’ll be about 100 pages long

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 13:47

Some on these threads are just as bad as Brexiters, just the opposite side of the coin, you'll be equally to blame if we crash out, just keep that in mind

Hoooo · 21/10/2019 13:47

Corbyn is a lexiter.

To say anything else is disingenuous.

MockersthefeMANist · 21/10/2019 13:48

Heard one Brexit Tory MP say the HoC could easily scrutinise the WAB before Oct 31 by working day and night like his constituents do.

DGRossetti · 21/10/2019 13:49

The DUP are otherwise occupied. They're off to Stormont to sit among themselves and talk to the walls in the hope this will stave off abortion and equal marriage.

Oh, nearly forgot that. What's the score there ? Stormont hasn't been recalled (or whatever the term is) has it ?

If it doesn't happen by midnight, what's the next step ?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 13:49

Corbyn is a lexiter.

Thank you for proving my point hoo ffs

So what if he's a Lexiter Hoo? He has abided by the motions decided on in conference

DGRossetti · 21/10/2019 13:52

Corbyn is a lexiter. To say anything else is disingenuous.

I wonder what other words could be subsituted for Lexiter and make the same political (if not semantic) sense ?

"man"
"Londoner"
"allotment owner"
"cyclist"
"over 60"

?

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 13:54

If BJ / Cummings / JRM weren't so focused on posturing & electioneering & being general clever dicks,

then the WA would probably be on a smooth path to passing by now

Hoooo · 21/10/2019 13:56

Lifelong labour voter here.

I will not vote labour whilst he is leader.

I don't trust him. He is intellectually very average. A good constitutuency MP, I'm sure, but leader??

Nope.

Hoooo · 21/10/2019 13:57

Conference?
Ha.
Momentum love in you mean?

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 13:57

Hmmm.

The Andy Fisher resignation letter had a sentence in it that stated Mr Fisher had spent vast amounts of time and energy on Corbyn's personal project - Lexit.

I think it's almost pointless to analyse what might have happened if this personal project had been abandoned.

It keeps me awake at night enumerating the different paths that might have been taken.

Sadly, we are where we are.

Which looks uncannily like 'fucked'.

Which is a shame.

I, personally, detected a gear-shift in Labour accounts on Friday evening. It was as though pennies had dropped - and there was something close to panic.

We are in a very tight spot now. It's frustrating. But here we are.

prettybird · 21/10/2019 14:00

Did you hear the chants of Where's Jeremy Corbyn? He was in Liverpool campaigning

Funny, I was sure I saw him in the HoC on Saturday. Confused

Tanith · 21/10/2019 14:00

“I don't trust him. He is intellectually very average. A good constitutuency MP, I'm sure, but leader??”

...and then I look at Boris Johnson and Jo Swinson and I remember that there is worse out there.

tobee · 21/10/2019 14:00

I don't want Corbyn to pivot to remain.

I want him to resign. I don't care if people say it's all the fault of MSM or Tony Blair or whatever. He needs to go.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 14:02

Funny, I was sure I saw him in the HoC on Saturday.

He was, Liverpool was after Grin

thecatfromjapan · 21/10/2019 14:03

I think Johnson is doing anything and everything to get a GE.

We're not at the stage where he drops his pants and shits in the middle of the chamber - but we're close.

He's positioning for the electorate he wishes to target in a GE - & he's bullying Conservative MPs (and the DUP).

He needs to make sure a CU amendment doesn't pass - or it's game over. Not just for his Deal, probably for a GE, too.

Hoooo · 21/10/2019 14:03

...yes.
Except bojo isn't the leader of a party I've supported all my adult life.
I also did not vote for bojo to be leader and therefore PM.
I'm sure there are tories who are horrified by bojo but I'd bet my left arse cheek they will still vote tory in a GE

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 14:04

WTF - I thought checks were only in the GB to NI direction, not NI to GB as well
WHY ? Confused

A red tape burden for any small NI business that "exports" to GB

  • and that is now what it looks like: exporting to a foreign country

Is this inherent in the WA "frontstop", or are the govt playing silly buggers, just to have a concession saved that they can give to the DUP ?

Stewart Wood@StewartWood

The #Brexit Minister Stephen Barclay just confirmed to me in his @LordsEUCom^ evidence that, under the Govt's proposals,^

Northern Irish businesses sending goods to Great Britain will have to complete export declaration forms.

but if there is No Deal:

Lords EU Committeee@LordsEUCom*

@DefraGovUK Minister George Eustice explains why it might not be viable for small businesses to trade across the border on the island of Ireland in a #NoDeal #Brexit
