Westminstenders: Extension or No Extension

Johnson has sent a letter he said he never would asking for an extension.

We now wait to see what the EU come back with.

It's likely to be a technical extension. At best.

France are really not happy with the idea of an extension and Macron is flexing his muscles with the EU at the moment. He has been prepared to upset all the other EU countries as he proved with blocking progress on accession to the EU for Northern Macedonia and Albania this week. Macron is fighting his own domestic battles.

It looks as if Johnson now has a majority for a deal. What that deal will ultimately look like will be dictated by the Withdrawal Agreement Bill which sets out implementation of the Withdrawal Act.

However, with the DUP firmly offside the chances of a vote of no confidence go up. As do the chances of an election.

And its also worth pointing out that whilst the WAB is legally binding if we have an election and Johnson gets a majority, then there can always be changes made to domestic law. (implementation of the WA rather than the agreement principles of the WA agreed with the EU).

Thus any 'assurances' over workers rights and regulatory standards are only as good as long as this parliament...

Fluffy - yes, I'm 100% sure they would vote for a PV Grin

boatyardblues · 21/10/2019 08:36

Were the Labour Party to move back in that direction it would be a different story.

I can’t stop thinking about all the politically homeless centre ground voters who are crying out for a credible option they can get behind. What is it that stops the likes of Keir Starmer and other moderates making a new party? Is there a lot of wealth and infrastructure in the established parties that you can’t get traction without?

We've got to find humour from somewhere, pretty.

If BoZo wants to avoid comment he shouldn't say something so stupid!

MangoSalsa · 21/10/2019 08:51

Think that’s been tried a few times already boatyardblues. Including recently.

6 months ago I sent Letwin an email thanking him for the work he was doing on behalf of "the people", and had a reply within the hour from his phone.

I also sent JRM one, telling him exactly what I thought of his antics and shenanigans. I never did get a reply ....

I believe JRM to be a extremely dangerous figure in politics today, the power behind the throne, with an extreme hard right agenda which he has no intention of putting before the electorate.

He runs Bojo, and having such an amoral figurehead for prime minister is allowing this to happen.

The news today of impending prosecutions for working against the Government abroad should act as a clarion call to all sane, responsible people about just how far the Tories have lurched to the extreme right of the political spectrum, completely vacating the centre ground.

With an ineffective opposition these are dangerous times.

Butterymuffin · 21/10/2019 09:03

boat there is money that comes from being the 'official' opposition, as well as the next largest party etc. I remember it being discussed when the Lib Dems were decimated in 2015 because of the implications that the SNP would now benefit financially from the gain in seats instead of them. Plus there is the benefit of the existing infrastructure, a network of grassroots activists, and of course the brand power of the name. Plenty of voters won't look any further than seeing 'Labour' (or whichever party name) on a ballot paper.

Remind me how many votes Johnson has won again Hmm

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 21/10/2019 09:07

Morning all. I'm braced for another week of political rollercoasting. Mini bercows has a play date this morning with his girlfriend then we are decorating for Halloween as distraction therapy.

Parliament’s rules, Erskine May, seem clear that the Speaker cannot allow ⁦

fedup21 · 21/10/2019 09:12

When do they start today-when might we know what they will be voting on?

Anybody want to suggest to the clientele of the Barmy Arms that Our Cuntry [sic] Needs Patriots To Dig Pick For Victory?

Joanna Cherry being excellent on Sky News. Saying that she's instructed her legal team to take a light touch in the continuance of Benn/BJ case as it's a distraction (as we've discussed here) because the EU has accepted the extension letter, however childish BJ had been in the optics of sending it (spin from Cummings, as she put it).

Interestingly, she said that the Court might continue it again as BJ could still try to frustrate the Benn Bill, eg if they say Yes and/or for a different period than that requested (which is allowed for within the Benn Bill).

She is wonderfully succinct and manages to communicate clearly without being verbose Smile

As a faithful lurker of these threads even I know he tried just so he could say that he was prevented from bringing it before the commons....

So is Peston really that obtuse?

Why are the excellent people like Joanna Cherry and Keir Starmer not in charge instead of Bozo the Clown and his entourage of also rans? Sad

JustAnotherPoster00 · 21/10/2019 09:24

So is Peston really that obtuse?

Because of access to No10 I think he and Kuenssberg having become nothing more than government propaganda mouthpieces

MangoSalsa · 21/10/2019 09:25

Does the British PM have to wear a scruffy blonde ceremonial wig In 2192 tayto?

prettybird · 21/10/2019 09:28

I was looking at Sky's Brexit Countdown banner and thinking it was wrong Shock - currently says 10 days and 14 hours and x reducing Wink minutes - taking us up to midnight on 31 October Confused

Then I remembered the clock change this weekend, when we get an extra hour as the clocked go back Blush

prettybird · 21/10/2019 09:30

Tayto - dh had sent me that too and I was just about to post it myself Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 09:30

The proposed ERG law will only criminalise opponents, not ERG supporters frustrating the ruling of a British court:

Daniel Kawczynskii@DKShrewsbury*

As almost fluent Polish speaker I am doing all I can can to convince Polish govenemt to veto extension of Article 50.

Others working on Czechs and Hungarians.

One of these will veto I predict.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 09:31

< his spelling, not mine >

taytosandwich · 21/10/2019 09:32

@MangoSalsa I think they should have to wear a sexy grey wig, bold lipstick and gold trouser suit in the style of TM. Maybe Boris could start the trend!

fedup21 · 21/10/2019 09:32

One of these will veto I predict.

Really-why?!

BigChocFrenzy · 21/10/2019 09:33

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall

If reports are correct that EU will grant extension only until February, it is time frame which will really only permit a general election.

If it happens, pressure on Opposition to grant one will be immense.
