The Supreme Court case continues
(ruling possible Friday but likely Monday)

The new NI proposal is bollocks and Johnson didn't get why until it was discussed in Europe.

There was a press conference in Luxembourg which looks good for Johnson.

Johnsons approval ratings are up.

And we are making no obvious progress to anything but no deal...

Iain Watson @iainjwatson
Breaking: i am told @jeremycorbyn will make a statement to the @UKLabour NEC this morning to try to defuse @tom_watson row and kill off a confernce vote on abolishing the post Abolition of dep leader post remains on the formal agenda

Jennifer Williams @jenwilliamsMEN
One MP on the Watson situation: ‘It’s completely insane. The only explanation is they think an election is imminent, we’ll lose, and Jeremy is toast and they don’t want Tom in interim control. So, amazingly, they’re actually undermining Jeremy at the same time.’

They say there’s a rumour neither Corbyn nor McDonnell knew about it, although that could just be ‘convenient cover’. ‘Either way we’ve already wrecked the beginning of our own conference.’

‘Some optimistic folks suggest this is all to distract from the Brexit row, which is like blowing up your house to draw attention away from a room that needs painting.’

(And potentially blowing yourselves up in the process.)

Matt Chorley @mattchorley
The start of Labour conference could only get worse if it emerges a frontbencher has been private messaging pictures of himself in paisley pyjamas with his knob out

Still time yet!

Paul Brand @paulbranditv
BREAKING: Jeremy Corbyn has submitted alternative motion to NEC to try to neutralise the Tom Watson issue. Kicks question of Deputy Leader into long grass. Seems representations by other senior Labour sources have persuaded him to try and seek unity.

Oh great! So they had to persuade Corbyn to take a stand?

Are people still defending the current Labour Party as being serious about power?

What a fan-fucking-tastic day for Johnson! You know, Boris Johnson. Remember him, Labour?

thecatfromjapan · 21/09/2019 10:29

For the Labour Party nerds, TSSA and Unison have weighed in against this.

'
Strong statements from TSSA and Unison attacking Jon Lansman and Unite’s attempts to purge Tom Watson. What larks.'

Songsofexperience · 21/09/2019 10:33

Oh god. And I was hoping Corbyn might FINALLY go and make room for a realistic option as LOTO.

Songsofexperience · 21/09/2019 10:42

Incidentally, looking up some of the new manifesto proposals I think the 32 hour week would be an utter disaster.
The 35 hour week wasn't a success in France. I'd personally tell Labour to steer well clear.

Songsofexperience · 21/09/2019 10:45

Rent control and inclusive ownership funds seem more or less in line with what's in place in many EU countries, esp Scandi (though perhaps more flexibly)
The private school campaign I'm not sure about. Sounds populist to me. I don't necessarily like Eton and what it represents but a wholesale nationalisation of independent schools seems ill thought-through.

TheABC · 21/09/2019 10:50

I am wondering if and how the Tories can top this conference mess. It beggers belief.

thecatfromjapan · 21/09/2019 10:51

I wouldn't worry too much about the working week stuff, Songs.
It'll be in the form of various tax incentives to reduce hours, I would guess. We're waaaay off a 4-day week.

Cheery predictions by the Mirror:

pamperramper · 21/09/2019 11:19

I've seen online that there are predictions that there will be big problems with using the Internet if there is a no deal Brexit (or to a lesser extent with a deal)? And that companies will be at risk of going under.

Think the move to oust Tom Watson is over isn’t it? Not happening from what I’ve seen.

The move is over. But how about the resulting damage?

Bearbehind · 21/09/2019 12:37

Well, I did say last week I wait and see what Labour and Corbyn do at their conference to try and understand why anyone in their right mind would support them - it’s not going well so far!

What a fucking shambles.

And ever the spineless JC hasn’t actually solved the TW problem and come out in support of one side or the other, he’s just kicked the can down the road, just like he’s always done with Brexit.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2019 12:40

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall
The withdrawal hasn’t calmed things, some are now on the warpath: “Yesterday evening there was an attempted coup d’état in the Labour Party. Neither the Party Leader nor any of the Shadow Cabinet were informed of the planned strike against Tom Watson...”

Just when I had decided to vote Labour despite my loathing of Corbyn and the hard left..........

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/09/2019 13:18

The Tory party have given Labour as near to an open goal as they will ever get. Yet the Labour Party are busy hacking each other in the shins and locking team members in the changing rooms.

Do they really think the Tories are sitting on their hands doing nothing to prepare for the inevitable GE whilst Labour bickers.

TheMShip · 21/09/2019 13:32

In other Brexit related news, the Mail on Sunday has notified Jo Maugham that they'll be publishing his private address tomorrow. He's had death threats this week, to put this in context. He's just tweeted that lawyers have been instructed. Expect an injunction.
