The Supreme Court case continues
(ruling possible Friday but likely Monday)

The new NI proposal is bollocks and Johnson didn't get why until it was discussed in Europe.

There was a press conference in Luxembourg which looks good for Johnson.

Johnsons approval ratings are up.

And we are making no obvious progress to anything but no deal...

Louise, well how do you tell the difference between battery acid hitting a human and Holy water hitting a demon?

Joking aside, I'm not sure it's a good look for the Irish, but does reflect how poorly Johnson is viewed abroad.

It's depressing.

I’m wondering just how surreal the Conservative Party conference will be this year. God knows it was weird enough when TM had her bad throat and the writing fell off the wall. How will they be able to say anything sensible or truthful? (Answers on the head of a pin in mirror writing please.)

NotaRealLawyer · 20/09/2019 16:14

I can't think of an example* in my lifetime of such an utterly shambolic piss poor performance by Tory politicians, and I've seen some shenanigans in my day, across all sorts of political entities.

It's embarrassing. A bad joke on the world stage.

(*Not even the day Ken Clarke "forgot" that he was on the steering committee of the Bilderberger group.)

At least we will be spared the sight of BJ-Cummings dancing on to the stage Wink.....

...won't we? Grin

The Octogenarian Brexiteers who were actually alive during the war are amongst those glorifying it and hankering for a return to the Blitz spirit in the face of no deal. I have seen several posts exhorting me to grow my own and make jam like their mothers used to do, enough to make me want to stop!

At a study group I go to, there are two octogenarians both born in the same year. One voted Leave, one Remain. The Leaver extols the blitz spirit. But in both cases, it has to be pointed out, they were small children when the war started. How much awareness of politics does a 5 year old have? Even by the time the war finished they were only 11, coming up to 12. The adults would have shielded them from much of the worst.

My 96 year old MIL however, who was on war work, had opportunities not open to her before: interesting work, camaraderie and a good wage. She does not eulogise the war; she voted Remain. She talks instead about the poverty of the 1930s with a father in and out of work, even though he was a skilled man with a trade.

Can a blank sheet of paper be leaked?

It was £100 to attend Conference as an observer a few months back, I'm wondering if the price has gone down since then. Grin Deflation and all that.

p.s. I think RTB should run a fringe meeting.
I'm sure we will pack it out.

LouiseCollins28 · 20/09/2019 16:38

"Conference, please welcome the President of the United States....."

He wouldn't, would he?

That Flavible map is weird as it shows the most marginal seat in the country (majority of 31) not flipping
I guess because its looking at swing from Tory to Libdem
whereas it will only take 16 people changing to Labour for Royston Smith to lose his seat .....

If the UK were the US, keeping papers secret would be to achieve a nervousness in those around us ... who will we support, who will we sell out. And that would matter because the US matters.

Back on planet Boris, and no one gives a shit. The only possible reason for keeping the papers secret is because they will contain a shopping list of who the UK is prepared to sell down the river to get out of this mess. Starting with NI, I'd guess. Then Scotland (we can safely assume Wales isn't even considered separately)

The problem any UK government has in delivering "Brexit" is it will need to deliver the UK as a whole.

One of the plot devices in Len Deightons "XPD" was that in negotiations with Hitler, Churchill was quite happy to let the Nazis have Ireland if it meant Britain kept the Empire. (The whole book revolves around keeping that and Churchills meeting with Hitler secret in the late 1970s ....)

You mean people are paying £100 to go to hear BoJo the clown saying,"Wiffle waffle piffle paffle," in between lying through his arse about everything else? Shock

averylongtimeago · 20/09/2019 17:32

That's interesting toilet paper you have there, DGR

NoWordForFluffy · 20/09/2019 17:41

Woah, DGR, that leaflet is bonkers!

Hoooo · 20/09/2019 17:44

DG Shock
Totally batshit leaflet

Ironically, the UK is probably one of the least Christian countries in the EU, going by church attendance

e.g. Germany even has a church tax - never give your religion on any official German form, or you'll find yourself paying it !

Some in the DUP fear the EU as a Catholic institution - well, some prominant EU politicians and founder member states are - and see sinister signs of it even in the flag Grin

DGRossetti · 20/09/2019 17:50

I wouldn't be surprised if there are similar batshit circulars backing Remain as well, but it never does any harm to remind ourselves of the levels of stupid out there.

DGRossetti · 20/09/2019 17:51

Ironically, the UK is probably one of the least Christian countries in the EU, going by church attendance

It's also one of the few countries in the world with a state religion.

Go figure.

DGRossetti · 20/09/2019 17:52

You have to PAY to attend the conference?

(Fawlty Towers)

No Riff Raff

ListeningQuietly · 20/09/2019 17:53

DGR
No Riff Raff
Riff Raff was in Rocky Horror Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 20/09/2019 17:54

Rats have to pay to jump on the sinking ship ?

ListeningQuietly · 20/09/2019 18:00

More shocking is who sponsors the meetings and discussions and freebie food and booze - Private Eye covers it every year (DGR is further ahead on his copy than I am)
